Wavedashing off a ledge.

I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered, but when your back is facing a ledge you can wavedash to grab the ledge and wavedash to slide off the ledge (into an aerial or shine for example). What is the technical difference in performing each? Sometimes I grab the ledge when I want to slide off, and sometimes I slide off when I try to grab the ledge.

Is it just DI? Like holding the joystick away from the edge will allow you to slide off the edge and letting it be will allow you to grab the ledge, or did I miss something somewhere?

It depends on your wavedash momentum. If you move backward too quickly for you to fall to the height for grabbing the ledge, then your ledge-grab box won't overlap the ledge.

while the above is true, it also depends greatly on your DI. I could do a super samus WD right at the ledge with my back facing it, then as soon as i'm off the ledge, fastfall and DI towards the ledge and I'll still grab it. that kinda gives you an idea of how much the DI affects it lol

Also if you're holding down at the height where you'd normally grab the ledge, you won't grab the ledge, no matter what.

Bottom line: you won't grab the ledge if you're holding down or back as you go by it. Hold back if you want to do an aerial or shine, don't if you want to edge hog.

I always just hold back to grab not the ledge. I works mostly, continued with a Bair of CF.
