Watching DVDs on your Wii

Do you Homebrew? Apparently, some of the very skilled Wii homebrewers have released a functional DVD player for the Wii--no console modifications necessary! Nintendo Wii Fanboy has released a handy dandy guide for getting it up and running. It's fairly simple and straightforward, and there's virtually no risk of a bricked console.

And to think Nintendo wanted us to believe that watching DVDs on the Wii would require "More than a firmware update". My ***.

That's cool.
How lame though, for Nintendo to make a console with no DVD support, especially when consoles of previous generations did.

It's not so much that it can't, but I assume they didn't want to have to pay (and thus make us pay) the licensing costs.

My thoughts exactly. Now that this hack is live, many people are predicting that Nintendo will quietly kill Homebrew again then offer a DVD Channel for a nominal fee (to cover the licensing costs). Now that it's out that the Wii can do it natively (most of us knew it by this point, but still) they can't keep spouting the old chestnut that it would require console modification.

Remember the last time that Nintendo tried to kill the Twilight Hack and Homebrew Channel? Both of them were back up within a week. I don't think that we'll have to worry about that.

So far, the only complaint I've heard about the MRPlayer is that the audio will desync sometimes, but it would get back on track.

Honestly, Nintendo can release a DVD channel for the Wii. The thing is that, we could always get the exact same thing for free from the Homebrew channel -- and most already have.

The thing is that Nintendo COULD make the Wii play DVDs, but then they would have to pay royalties, and then this cost would be passed down to the users. Its a really pointless fee simply because pretty much everybody has a DVD player nowadays and they are trying to keep the selling cost of the Wii down. I don't see why Nintendo would shut down Homebrew though. Unless it actually interferes with the sales because of pirated games, the DVD thing shouldn't be a problem. I mean they aren't losing money and basically its working out even better now that the Wii can play DVDs and the company doesn't have to pay anything because its done through Homebrew.

BTW, is Homebrew actually illegal, or is only using it to pirate games illegal?

I would think that using it as a DVD player is illegal, just because it avoids causing Nintendo to pay royalties, but still allows the console to play DVDs. If it WAS legal, then there would be no point to pay royalties at all, and just wait for a homebrew for the console.

It's illegal to get pirated games, and probably illegal to play DVDs, but it's not illegal to mod/run homebrew on your console. You own it, that would be like only allowing microsoft programs on a windows computer.
