My friend and I were playing Melee on Final Destination. He was Fox, I was Samus. He knocked me off the edge, and I managed to get back up within edge-grabbing range thanks to bomb recovery. He grabbed me while I was attempting to grab the ledge, and threw me down. I went flying down to my death, and I couldn't stop it.

We did some research afterward, and found out that it works with Fox on every single stage. (Provided you're near an edge.) You can't use Falco, however, as his lasers will stop the victim mid-fall.

So, topic title repeating, was this known?

Yes it was known...

but im pretty sure you can tech it...

typically called fox's death throw or meteor throw.
It's a meteor, so it can be meteor cancelled. Alternatively, you can edge tech it w/ the same timing you'd use to tech it normally, or just DI away from the edge and end up behind him.

All in all it's pretty horrible.
