Hi, I'm new here (see the noob in the rank)

Haven't been playing melee for a while, and I'm back in sight of all the amazing techniques that I've never lay an eye on. You guys are briliant.

Hopefully, I've chosen Marth to be specific in (Clap Clap Clap...)

As a matter of fact, I've just started practising those so called advanced skills for a short period of time, 2 days to be exact, an hour or so a day.

I still can't do a wavedash, and I've got some difficulty aiming the L-cancel, especially a FF-ing D-air.

I'll keep trying.

Apart from just hoping to get comments like "welcome to the Marth Community!", I wonder if I could just ask a few simple questions.

:confused:Do you guys start doing SHFFLCings and wavedashs (I mean, when you're still noob-like) using MARTH, or is it a good idea to practice with an alternitive character (either easier or harder) ?

I'm not kind of good at reflexes. :confused:How long have you guys trained to move like the vids did (or, just to do SHFFLCs fluently) ?

Well I was just worrying I might not get it even though I practice for ages (which is definitely a dreadful thought). I aim to master SHFFLCings, for starters, someday but I'm afraid I wouldn't...

:confused:Does anyone have the same thoughts when you're doing the basics, that you'll never get it?

Thought just doing smash everywhere was cool in the old days until I saw the SHFFLCs and dashs. I still suck badly at all the air attacks as I don't aim sharp enough. I get completely lost after FFs, and I stood there dreaming after LCing successfully (can't cope with all that speed, hahaha...)

Just aiming at SHFFLC, dash-dancing and DI at the moment. I'LL KEEP TRYING. Afterall I'm still on the basics...

Oh just one more thing. :confused:MUST I use the C-stick for somr of the airs? I hate to use it.

Please share your experience with me. A little will do. Thanks to any encouragement I may recieve.

P.S. Sorry this thread of mine is kind of lenghy...and my suckin English...

just use marth from the get-go and practice all techs with him. learn him from the beginning if hes who you want to main. when i started to pick up fox, people told me i should practice techs with a slower character to get better with them, or put my game into slow motion to see when i have to do everything, but its really not necessary.

if you start with who you are from the beginning, you'll pick it up, and be more comfortable with it in the end.

Don't worry about sounding like a noob. You sound like you really want to learn, so welcome!

You'll get the basics pretty soon. There is a big difference between being able perform advanced techs and being able to USE advanced techs. As you become more comfortable with them, they become second nature to you, and you no longer have to think about the specifics of what you're doing. You'll simply think "wavedash out of shield to jump cancelled grab" and perform it from muscle memory mostly.

No, you don't have to use the c-stick if you're not comfortable with it. I personally only use it when I want to shuffle an uair, crouch cancel into a smash attack, move in the air one way while attacking in the opposite direction, and sometimes when I fall through a platform and want to instantly put out an aerial (it feels more comfortable in some situations). The best way to get better is to get comfortable with these techniques, watch videos of experienced players, and read up on how to use what you're learning. You'll learn more about specific matchups later on. For now, just get comfortable with your character, and try to notice mindgames. This means being able to respond to your opponent by succesfully predicting him and countering as a response.

I started playing this game (never played SSB64) last October. Since then, I've probably put in two hundred hours of practicing techniques or combos against the cpu. Maybe it's more than five hundred hours though, I dunno... I don't keep track :) I do remember learning to wavedash/waveland on my 2nd day with the game for like 6 hours straight. First I had to learn how to do it, then I had to practice it. I was also completely new to gamecube and its controller (bought the cube just for smash). Your experience may vary! This isn't one of those games where you can put in two hours of practice then come out like z0mg_ledge_drop_to_walljump_to_knee_g-reg_amazing or whatever. Well actually, you probably could, but not until you're waaaay beyond where you are right now.

edit: POST 1111 !!!!

Yeah, everyone else got it right. Once you get really good, though, you'll be able to pick up a new character in, like, 2 minutes. I mean, you won't be REALLY good with them, but you'll be able to tear apart the scrubs with more or less anyone once you get some experience. I picked up the ledgedrop->walljump->knee->G-reg amazing combo after 2 minutes of practice with Falcon. It's still a little hard to do on reflex, though, mostly because I just love stomping people off the bottom of the screen too much. Actually, you should quit Marth and play Falcon. He's too good.

As for how long it took me to get SHFFLing and wavedashing down... I picked up wavedashing really quick, like nigh-instantaneously, but it took an awful long time to get my wavedashing to the level it's now at. Maybe a day or so to get it more or less perfect, and about a week until I could chain them together indefinitely, which is coincidentally a huge waste of time, I wouldn't bother with it. SHFFLing took me... I honestly have no idea how long to get down, but you really need to learn the timing for every different attack and character. They really all work slightly differently.

You'll get it down eventually, just keep working at it. If you think it's going to take a long time, you should probably focus on l-cancelling. Not only is it more immediately useful, but it's infinitely more likely to be in Brawl.
