half the world owns a 3DS and smash 4 is coming earlier for it.

how many people are going to buy a Wii U with the same game, without the Gamecube controller as a main option?

No. Smash 4 on Wii U is no doubt going to be the better version. The screen is easier to see, the graphics are much better, the option to use multiple controllers (Most importantly, the gamecube controller) wins a lot of people over already, and you don't need to own individual systems with the individual game to play together. Also, there's much less lag because it isn't a wireless connection, and no doubt there's gonna be a bunch of interference if there ever was a sm4sh tournament for 3ds.

I would not worry most of the people that owns a 3ds are little kids and they would probably get only the 3ds version but there are people who only would want the wii u version ( I'm looking at u competitive players) and then they are people who will get both like me so it a fair dividing line don get me wrong I think the 3ds version will sell more than wii u but the wii u will sell great to not let the wii u die

Just saying, has everyone forgotten about DS Download Play?
Well I think it is tgat people just want to have all the features available with like something like download play you might not get that you probably have to do only timed matches or there is only a limited amount of characters and stages. so I see what they mean

Game.Set.Match.

Also, I think this thread was more meant for the Wii U board, not that it matters that much.

If nintendo can get the wii u version out by November black friday like rumours suggest, then the wii u version and the wii u will do very well and sell tons of consoles this holiday.
They'd have Mario Kart 8, Smash, and Hyrule warriors for the holidays, they would do very good. But if they delay it to 2015, then.. they would miss out on a ton of sales.

The Wii U didn't die without Smash, why would it die AFTER Smash is released? This makes no sense.

It is obvious that the 3DS version will sell a lot more, but I am fairly sure the Wii U version will sell considerably well too, even with its small install base.

Nah, I know lots wanting the WiiU version.
Of course I personally think the 3DS version is better, but I think both versions will sell just about equally well.

I'm planning to get a Wii U specifically for Smash Bros because not very many of my friends have 3DSes. That said, there are other games on Wii U that I want, such as Super Mario 3D World, but Smash is the deal-maker for me and I'm planning on waiting until the inevitable Smash Bros bundle with GCN controller adapter before buying one.

From what I understand, the 3DS version doesn't have Download Play as an option, and you'll need multiple copies to play locally. That's a feature I would need to have for the 3DS version to be worthwhile to me personally. There's a number of other reasons why the Wii U version is going to be preferred, but the main one is that the console version of any fighting game is almost always going to be preferred to the handheld version in general. The Wii U's 2015 lineup appears to be loaded as well, with one rumor from the guy who leaked Devil's Third stating that it'll have one noteworthy release per month. Don't worry, the Wii U isn't going anywhere.

Nothing has been explicitly said about Download Play for the 3DS, but even if it is implemented it's probably going to be limited considering how much data would need to be transferred. To be honest, the only game I can remember having a really good Download Play was Mario Party DS (also being one of the last conventional Mario Parties helped a bit). Depending on how the online goes during the Japanese release, I think it'll still be pretty strong.

But back to the Wii U, it's going to be supported well into 2015 with releases so you know it'll be supported until then. And Nintendo stuck to their guns with the Gamecube despite poor sales and I'm pretty sure Melee is still popular ;)

I can't speak for anybody else, but I purchased a Wii U two weeks ago solely because of this game. I might buy Mario Kart or something in the meantime, but as of now the Wii U lays dormant in it's box.

Funny how anyone could say the 3DS version has more content, when when the game comes out there all gonna see how much more the Wii U version does....

I don't know about you but I'm only buying the 3DS version because it comes out earlier. I'm totally buying the Wii U version because I only play Smash with a GC controller.

Thread title a little overdramatic much, no?

Anyway, this seems to be turning into yet another 3DS vs Wii U type of thread. If you want to discuss your question in terms of how many people would buy the Wii U and the game without the Gamecube controller as the main option then feel free to do so over at the Social discussion thread.
