"Can you kill Chavez?"

You know, I don't doubt that there have been plans drawn up for that, but assassinating a head of state with close ties to Russia and Iran (who are already pissed off at us) is out of the question. Not to mention Venezuela exports us a good chunk of oil and we really can't afford to lose that. Literally. We are broke.

However, if you guys want to kill him I'm sure we could arrange for some under-the-table support (which is probably already going on). Sorry, I'm afraid that's the best that can be done.

Haha, I just remembered that video last year of the king of Spain telling Chavez to shut up. Good stuff; it's good to know that we aren't the only ones who think he's full of ****.

he IS full of ****, and i think trying to kill him its pretty much a not smart thing to do.. He is being proctected by the Colombian guerrilla, and venezuela's army.. If he dies, he wil be remembered as a hero, and tere would be a civil war here, so thats not the idea. I wish it could be so easy as u say, but if it would be that easy, t would happen so much time ago...

Is it just me, or is it going to be the Cold War all over again, but with more people involved?

I suppose this is to be expected. The US has been encroaching on Russia's sphere of influence ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Now that Russia has tons of money thanks to oil prices, the shoe is on the other foot.

I don't see Chavez being dumb enough to use his nuclear power in the practical sense. You better believe he'll be strongarming the heck out of anybody that will listen, though.

And if that strongarming heads north, the CIA will "take care of him". They may not outright assassinate him (didn't go over so well with Castro), but they might pull an Operation Ajax and oust him. Granted Ajax was about getting a lot of oil and helping a British multinational, but I'm sure there'd be some oil in it for them if Chavez was overthrown.

When America dabbles in politics outside their borders, the method usually involves training local mercenary and/or "freedom fighter" groups and arming them, then just letting the crisis solve itself, for better or for worse. This is happened during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan when they backed you-know-who.

If an operation like that actually worked, however, it'd be slightly less likely to produce a martyr from a monster than if, say, they sent a Delta Force soldier with a sniper rifle.

But hasn't that failed or backfired so many times that you'd think the CIA would know better by now?

You'd think.

You'd certainly think.

But you'd be wrong.

After all America has two major foreign policy earthshakers - infiltration and invasion.

It doesn't "officially" hurt to try.
It definitely does. Leftist demagogues like Chavez build their power base on anti-American sentiment, usually based in part on the numerous covert operations undertaken by the CIA in the past. Not to mention the Taliban, like EE pointed out. These things almost always come back to bite us in the ***.

Yeah it does. If you $##@ up the assassination:

a. Chavez has even more ammo against America

b. All the Anti-American terrorists have a new propaganda weapon.

c. America will have a TON of explaining to do.

d. national blunder, and media ownage fest.

But who exactly listens to Chavez apart from people who already hate us?

b. All the Anti-American terrorists have a new propaganda weapon.
None of which have been terribly effective beyond one or two niches so far.

c. America will have a TON of explaining to do.
Disavow everything. He can't prove it and I doubt anyone beyond the group of people already mentioned would care or give it much more thought.

d. national blunder, and media ownage fest.
The MSM is trash as is; at least this will be a better headline than Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy.

You're very, very wrong, Executive. The only way a country can genuinely change is a citizen revolt, and if they CONVINCE the populace that the U.S. deserves the government's hatred, the citizens will unite in ignorance behind their leaders. That is why Castro has been in power for so long in Cuba. Failed assassination attempts, Bay of Pigs... these things turned it all from just another boring foreign policy thing to an actual, institutional hatred among the people. And what do they do, hateful as they are? Embrace the people that give a voice to this hate, in this case, their often oppressive military governments.

I'm very, very wrong then.

I guess people like Blea Gelo who can see through people like Chavez are exceptions to the rule. Sometimes I forget how one charismatic leader can completely sway the beliefs of an entire group of people. Maybe I should go brush up on that, watch some Hitler diatribes so I won't forget again.
