Variable Taunts

I searched for a thread that discussed this, but it seems there are none. I was thinking it would be cool if in Brawl, each direction on the D-pad did a different taunt. Each taunt could vary in duration. For example, Mario's current taunt would be his longest taunt and you would press one direction, like D-Up on the D-pad to do it. Press D-Down, and he does a shorter taunt, like, I dunno, "Here we go!" *flashes peace sign* Each direction would have a different taunt for each character, that all vary in their duration.
We all know that taunts (with a few exceptions like Young Link) are not useless. They are a great way for ending stalemates, or teasing a hesitant opponent. So why not throw in three more taunts for each character to first, balance the characters' taunts who are too long, and to increase their use in mindgames. There could be one direction that has a very brief taunt, shorter than all the current ones, which could be often used for mindgames.

Here's one more idea, and this could work with multiple, or just the one taunt. How would it be if you could speed out of your taunt by mashing A? Basically, the developers could make it so if while you're doing your taunt, every time you press A, it cuts off one or a few frames of your taunt. This could highly increase the popularity of taunting. You wouldn't know how fast your opponent is at it, or they could fake to be bad at it, and later catch you by surprise. Things could change with taunts if they allowed this.
So, thoughts?

More taunts would be nice, but even two would suffice. Yes, I just had to rhyme. Anyway, when characters always do the very same movements, it makes them seem lifeless. More variety in taunting would work well against that, especially considering it doesn't have any actual value in gameplay ( unless you are actually capable of meteoring someone with Luigi's ).

Taunts = fun. Taunts = humor. Taunts != strategy. If could finish Y.Link's taunt in half the time, why would I use it? His taunt is a great way to say, "Not only did I knock you off the stage, but I had enough time to do something of no benift to myself. I rule."

Four taunt's'd be way cool, though. Every character should be able to do a 3 second taunt.

I just had an idea: Ganandorf could have an alternate taunt as his taunt from Twilight Princess during the sword fight final phase. (He does that little beckon with two waves of his hand, like, "Bring it!")

That'd be sweet. Fox needs to be able to coc (sorry it won't let me type the whole word) his gun and Captain Falcon absolutely has to have a taunt that involves gyrating his hips. It would fit his character perfectly.

Well, the more taunts and the faster they are, you'll be able to do them more, sure, but they lose their fun because you'll end up doing them a lot anyway so it won't be anything special. Taunting is fun to do when messing around, I'm sure a few more wouldn't hurt. Gives a bit more variation, too, and if you don't like a taunt, there might be another for that character you like. Teasing with em is fun, I've fit in a few while my opponents were franctically trying to hit me and I just taunt as they miss. I always thought Ness should do that peace sign, that's his trademark pose for a picture. But instead, he says "Okay". Bottom line, it'd be cool, but taunting will lose its fun if everyone can do it. Y Link especially, if one gets fit in on you, then you know you should be offended. I think there should be one long taunt, and one shorter one.

That's why there would be long, streched out taunts for one direction- there would still be the humiliation and mocking value with the long lasting ones.

Long stretched out taunts that you can make shorter by pressing the A button...another idea you mention, and sounded like you planned on using it, in the end making it short anyway. If you tell me you wouldn't use the A button idea, then I think we've someone who's disagreeing with their own ideas, now wouldn't we? Even the long lasting ones could get their value taken away by all the other short ones.

Oh, and as a little side note, don't think I'm picking a fight with you or trying to offend you or whatever. Some people take things the wrong way and get angry. This happens to me a lot, so keep that in mind if we will discuss further. It's not fun to talk to someone if the other one is raving mad for...nothing. I don't know you, slightly newer user so I don't know if that would happen or not with you. *shrug* Just my little notice there.

I've done it once! It made me EXTREMELY happy! My opponent paused and we fell to the ground laughing. It was AMAZING!

Taunt combo! DOWN LEFT UP! WOOT! HAH!

...Make all taunts JC-able? That would work wonders. XD

Seriously now, good idea. I like it.

Hmm. I can see how that would be contradictory in itself. Maybe the taunt speeding suggestion isn't very probable. It would kill the effect of pulling off the long taunts like Young Link's current one. -But admittedly, it would make mindgames involving taunts have greater depth.

Meh, don't worry. I hate flaming and try to avoid it myself. I'm always careful to not make very profound statements that might offend someone. You should see the innocent suggestions that can start a loyal player flaming in the nerf thread.

I love the mindgames in taunting thing...that's amusing. I like it, too, it can make a match funny, so I suppose if you use it the right way it can still have the insult. Personally, I taunt when the other player screws up, so I guess if you don't kill it for the wrong reasons it can work. As an idea for a whole, it's pretty cool. It also depends on the person you use it against, some people are generally more calmer than others, and if you taunt a lot, they are losing, so overkill or not, it can still annoy. I like the idea to see it somewhere along the series.

Nice to know you understand the pain of crazed users. I used to get in online fights all the time, and once I passed through a forum page with novel-long posts and pointless insults and I thought "You know what, I don't want to be like that."
Sure, the fighting part was taken out, but I still have a heck of a lot to say and a lot of my posts are looong. Oh well, I guess this isn't the place to be discussing this subject but that's my pointless background story.

I like the idea of more taunts. It always bothered me that left right and down on the dpad were un-used buttons. It's not like programing them takes up much space, and if people don't use them because they are longer than others, then meh, they are mostly for fun anyway. I liked that cap falcon and pichu have two taunts anyway (I think they were the only two.)

I originated from a place like that, and that's EXACTLY what I thought myself. So I built my name on kindness there. ^_^' Kindness will overpower insults, the insulter may not notice it, but it wins every time in the end.

Sorry, had to get my "new member" word in. lol
Anyway >_> Moving on <_<;;

Great idea! Multiple taunts would be so much fun. Like maybe in a certain condition you could do a certain taunt. EXAMPLE: *You just hit someone into a wall* Your do a taunt as Capt Falcon. "Stay off the wall , loser"
or something like that. lol ^_^

More taunts would be great! Incorperating taunts into mind-games would be neat too, like what you said using the shorter taunts / semi-shorter taunts to really make yer opponent think they have the chance or w.e

Speeding out of taunts.. Meh. I dunno about that, then like, everyone would have super short taunts and it'd all be the same! aside from that, awesome idea!

I think it's a cool idea but I prefer a new character above this but if they have enough time great idea also that mashing the A button then there is some strategy involved long or slow you don't know it hahahaha I can't wait to do that
mmmm... ever heard of punctuation? lol! i could hardly understand that!

v *Pats behind* Totally dumb and generic character concept.

Wario has become a joke from his original concept.

i think hideous being has a point, using A while taunting to make it shorter could create a near infinite amount of mind games (think about it), as for the different taunts with different durations assigned to the different d-pad buttons would be good, think about it: they'd all have a different duration, which means you could shorten them in different intervals, creating psychedelic mind games, and since the enemy could never be sure of what taunt their enemy would use, they cant adequately prepare for a counter measure, 'cause they'd be TOO unsure if they'll try shortening the taunt, or not, creating a mind-bendingly crazy mind game, nice idea HB, wish i thought of it~

It's difficult to say if more taunts is a good idea or bad idea. The thing is, taunting is a supposed risk. Every character has their own taunt, and so, one can be careful or wreckless with their taunting.

For example:

Let's pretend Snake has a massive taunt. Very long. And then let's say MetaKnight's is super short. If MK wants to taunt, he can do it pretty much whenever. Snake will have to wait for the proper moment to do his. Nooow, if there is a stalemate, and the players wish to taunt, MK will not taunt because he knows Snake's is super long, and will not use it in that situation - if MK taunted Snake, he would immediately attack knowing how short MK's taunt is, however, SNAKE may decide to taunt because he knows his is longer, which will draw MK toward him, but MK may not attack because he knows that's what Snake wants and may taunt instead, because he knows he can fit his super short taunt in.

In other words - taunting provides strategy, in certain conditions. Perhaps it is only ME who looks at it this deeply, but since that's the case, I'd say no to extra taunts, because that would upset the delicate threat that the taunt game rests upon. If everyone has a short taunt, and a long taunt, then everything gets mixed up and it's hard to tell what to do. There would be almost no point in taunting in a stalemate. But now that i think about it, maybe it could add more depth to it...

Anyways, I think extra taunts would be awesome. Also, for Snake, his super long version should be him taking out a cigarette, lighting it, puffing it, tossing it, stepping on it... badASS...

" well...yeah....uhmm....*sniff*....aherm......ByE~

you know if your bored with the taunts in melee you can use your smash A attacks instead, or in some cases your B attacks. I play as young Link and sometime i forget to taunt right away so if i taunt then i will get smashed off. instead of using my long *** taunt i just smash up A for my own taunt. many other characters can use smash moves as taunts aswell.

Well yes, then there is the art of improvised taunts. I was always fond of (when playing with Link) pulling out a bomb, C-sticking it upwards, then jumping up to uair it. Very satisfying. Don't try this if you're gonna screw up though. You stab it too late, and you'll take damage- quite humiliating, and it might even put you in a tumble suitable for a quick opponent to begin comboing.

With the online play, I think taunts will be kind of "smileys", that's why there should be multiple smileys, but with a different "emotion".

For exemple, you just did something stupid, like, air dodging over a hole or smashing a bob-omb. Well you're going to use the "oh no" taunt.
Here is what I think it should be, and the Mario example :

up taunt : semi long taunt to make fun of the opponent (Mario : the current grow up taunt)
down taunt : a short taunt to express sadness (Mario : "Mamma mia")
left taunt : a short taunt to express surprise (Mario : "Woah!")
right taunt : a short taunt to express laughing (Mario : "Ha ha ! Here we go !")

Top Bottom
