USM-eM: The obligatory Melee inspired mod for 3DS and Wii U

Let's start off with explaining ourselves. USM-eM is a modpack for both platforms which has been in development for over a year. We have our website over at http://yudowat.github.io/USM-eM where you can further mingle with our developers on our Discord server.


USM-eM? I'm pretty sure one of those Ms stand for Melee, doesn't it?

You wouldn't be wrong, but don't be mistaken. Aside from maintaining a steady flow of users and active development for over thirteen months, please know that USM-eM stands for the Unnamed Smash Melee-esque Mod, which later grew to become the modpack name itself.

This is worded very specifically, as it is Melee-esque and not Melee HD.
We've had over 4,000 downloads while not advertising ourselves on GameBanana (we have had a beta release which doesn't share the same name, that said). This changes all core functionality of Smash 4, including ledge mechanics, rage, everything down to removing Smash 4's input buffer system, setting aside the extensive individual changes to each character and new stages and costumes soon to come. Our changelog is currently in development and will be released alongside our next modpack release.

Speaking of Melee HD, that mod already exists... why are you still around?

The Melee HD project started many months after ours, and only for the Wii U. It also quite literally was Melee attributes ported to the new game.
This mod is released for both platforms, and has its own charm and unique gameplay elements planned out. It's obligatory to include wavedashing, etc in the future, but it isn't possible at the moment for either platform. (Our first three releases included an experimental wavedash made solely in ACMD where airdodging forces momentum forwards for the first three frames, and backwards for frames 4 to 8. It allowed users to force momentum both forwards and backwards on command, but was janky and removed outright.)

In short, here is what has happened so far and what is upcoming:

  • Four stages imports on the Nintendo 3DS version
  • Game engine modifications, such as the removal of rage, backwards ledge grabbing, dash dancing, ledge cancelling, the input buffer ssystem. Wavedashing, original ledge mechanics, and L-Cancelling are planned, but impossible at the moment.
  • Character models and costumes (need Wii U ports)
  • Extensive UI work (need Wii U ports)
  • Menu and replay mechanics rework. Replays will automatically rename themselves to USM-eM so you don't confuse replays saved with vanilla with replays saved with other packs/vanilla Smash. Also, many tips aimed for competitive play and Melee have been added.
  • (future) new Announcer (we have someone on this)

Our next release is due in over a week. Originally scheduled for last week, it was postponed due to many members being dislocated due to Irma. Personally, I am still dislocated. Our latest release is hosted on the site, including the experimental Wii U build. Most of our members solely own Nintendo 3DS and have been developing the Wii U version blindly, with thanks to our beta testers on our server. I am also here to recruit potential members to join this team to speeden this process as we are currently in need. Preferably, existing recognizable members which we can count on. We are fine on modelling and animation editors, but we're mainly in need of Wii U owners who can port UI elements, developers which can work with C++. Another mind to assist with moveset editing also would not hurt to speed this process. Please let me know by DM or join our Discord server, and ping at the devs.
