Useful taunting

I remember talking to a friend of mine while he was playing Street Fighter 3rd Strike, and he pointed out to me that when each character in SFIII taunts, different things happen, like Ryu's stun gauge will lower or Q's stamina raises. Then I remembered that in pro wrestling games, taunting raises your stamina or health (at least it did in the WCW vs nWo game I played on the 64 way back when.) And even Soul Calibur has the soul charge mechanic, where you do increased damage for about 10 seconds or until you get hit.

So, why not make taunts remotely useful in Brawl? I'd personally be rather surprised if this isn't done. It could be a global benefit, perhaps a 5-10% heal, or momentary increased damage of +1% or something, maybe even use it as a Final Smash charge (although that would be highly, highly, highly unlikely.)

It's not a loss at all if this mechanic isn't in game. I'd just be minutely disappointed if it isn't implemented.

I don't think it would happen..
If it healed, camping would become Uber.
Stand there, taunt, taunt, ect.
Better yet.
Fast character runs away from slow character.
Run, taunt (heal), run taunt (heal), run taunt(heal), ect.

That could be a little screwy..

On 1 on 1 matches you always get a free taunt when you KO the other person, plus the large stages make it easy to separate yourself and get a free taunt, so I don't think they deserve the same reward that someone who taunts in an up-close 1 on 1 game like SFIII should get.

I think think this quote was the most relevant one from my posts in that thread:

I really don't like the idea of making taunts do something game-play wise. It's there for fun/mind-games.

The entire idea behind a taunt is that you're making yourself vulnerable to attack for absolutely no gain to yourself. As soon as there's a reason for doing it, such as resetting the "stale moves" effect, it's no longer a taunt, it's a move.

Also, it takes away from the flair of using taunts. If you're playing to perfection, you'll do your taunt every chance you get. Not because you want to, but because it slighting increases the damage some of your overused moves do. You'll see taunts all the time. I think that'll take some of the appeal away from them.

Keep them useless and fun.

Actually, Smash Bros. Melee has some useful taunts. This is quoted from Smash Wiki

While most taunts are useless strategically, some carry a fair amount of use:
Luigi's taunt can function as an exceedingly weak attack (1% damage, set knockback), though if he hits with the bottom of his foot, it is a spike with moderate knockback.

Kirby's taunt will get rid of his current ability without damaging him.

Mario's taunt massively enlarges his hitbox.

Ganondorf's taunt makes him hover above the ground, which makes it possible to avoid Koopa shells and Bob-ombs.

Pichu's taunt can be used to dodge incoming attacks.

Link and Young Link can fool opponents into being hit by a Boomerang by firing the projectile and then taunting. The boomerang can then strike on its return.

Falco and Fox have a hidden taunt which can be performed on any Star Fox stage in SSBM. This taunt is done by tapping down on the directional pad for 1 frame. It randomly plays clips from a set of phrases spoken by the Star Fox Team. All of the possible phrases can be found in the Sound Test.
So not all are useless, but i guess they are still sort of fun:)

maybe if the taunts were very very long and didn't help that much like atk power boost for 30 secs.

you also forgot luigi's taunt, its the only one that does damage. plus all taunts are extremely annoying and spamming them can through your opponent off his game by pissing him off

Taunts should make the enemy angrier than the ones currently, ex. if Krystal was in the game she would say:

"You're not ready yet!"

like she does in Assault. If Ice Climbers were in the game, they would clap each other's hand and wink towards the screen together...

... just make the taunts more aggrivating and it should be fine!

Uh Actually Clarkjables i DID include luigi's in the Smash Wiki quote, you must have not have been looking close enough

Link to go back to his old taunt from SSB64 plz
What was his old taunt? I don't remember.

Yeah anyways, taunts should just be used to provoke people. Such as KOing them and then taunting. If taunting was used for advantage, it wouldn't be fun. I could see my friends taunting nonstop, and it would be really annoying.

SSB64: Link strikes some cool Karate Kid-esque pose on one leg with his sword held kinda horizontally at eye level

SSBM: Link strikes some lame GC-esque pose and flips his hair

Good Link's needs to heal him. It lasts THREE SECONDS, and one would assume drinking milk would heel you, especially since that's what it did in the game.

Link's SSBM taunt is just scary. Kirby's taunt can also be useful for getting rid of abilities you've sucked in so you don't have to kill yourself to do so. Luigi's pose and Ganondorf's have already been stated.

But anyway, I do think they should stay useless, but be made more annoying. Because taunts sometimes do anger me and I end up beating the living daylights out of the person...so. :]

Well it should depend on the character. Not every character should get an uber taunt, that just wouldn't be fair. Here are some of my ideas:

Young Link should be able to heal himself slightly with each chug of milk he drinks. 1-2% per gulp.

Luigi's got that meteor taunt already, I say make it a spike just for the hell of it.

Kirby's taunt drops his copied ability, I say his dropped ability should bounce and do damage. Also, another Kirby should be able to suck it up and take it.

Fox and Falco's taunt should have a very small percent chance to call for help from an Arwing.

Mewtwo, Bowser, and Ganondorf should halt their opponents for a second (they'd be stunned by fear... you know... intimidation!)(but not aerial opponents because that could be too much of an unfair edgeguarding advantage)

Captain Falcon should make his opponents 'show him their moves' (maybe attack with a random move?) (Lol, I don't know... I just had to do something for that taunt)

Oh, man, the tournament scene would go ape**** if Nintendo did anything like making taunts broken (calling an Arwing occasionally, etc)

So Ganondorf's pelvis thrust would stop enemies in their tracks? That would be hilarious.

Like most people in this thread, if all taunts were used for something instead of just being cool, then they'd become a move and lose their initial purpose. Granted, some taunts do have a use, but that's just a cool little addition.

I completely disagree with people who are saying more taunts to choose from, and so on. Again, the taunt is just there primarily for fun. To poke fun at someone when you send them flying. Sakurai wouldn't go and wreck that.
