Do all and any Wii updates ruin the homebrew, because Nintendo just made the internet channel better. Downloading that would force me to rehack the Wii, right?

"1 September 09: Nintendo has released a new version of the Internet Channel. The new version offers support for Flash 8 and is free. Users who have previously paid will be offered a free NES Virtual Console title after October. "
From wiibrew, it doesn't say anything about it changing anything but the internet channel, so it's probably safe to download.

Only firmware updates have the potential to ruin something, not channel updates.

I think updating your Wii if you aren't already at 4.1 MIGHT kill your Homebrew, but Bannerbomb works with the newest firmware, so unless you erase everything off your SD card there's really no reason updating could hurt it.

So far, no system updates can remove already-installed HBCs. They can, however, prevent certain methods of installing the HBC.

Channel updates, however, have no negative side effects that I know of.

If you have homebrew you should just download the new internet channel from the internet...
