This reminds me of my situation and rival, we even have the same colors! Except my rival's falco is too good. >.> That falco wasn't that good. Lol @ edgeguarding with phantasm.

Things to improve:

1. Sweetspot the edge. Doing so will minimize risk of getting knocked out when you could be hanging onto the ledge, surviving. I still haven't got it down but that falco definetly took advantage of your non sweetspotted up b's.

2. Use the up tilt to continue combos, not always to start them. I saw you use bair out of a lot of comboes, which generally hit them too far away to continue them. Not necessarily always use uptilt instead but thing of other things to use besides that bair. Its not that good unless you're edgeguarding/near end of stage.

3. Gay falco. Maybe you haven't played against a lot of falco/fox, but their recovery is very predictable. Especially if they're recovering under the stage. Space yourself, and use dtilt/fsmash, or counter sometimes if you can't get the sweetspot or space yourself fast enough. Dair also if you're ok at it. Also, you can backthrow them off, but if you're relying on a shield grab make sure to keep an eye out for the forward smash.

Spend about 10 hours over the course of a week practicing L-cancelling. Practice every move marth has at all different timings with short hops and full hops and hopping from the ledge to the stage, etc. It will help speed up your marth.

Don't use both jumps, especially when you're over like 80%. If you get hit off stage you're done.

For now, don't even use uair. Instead, focus on spacing with fairs and nairs. Your marth isn't advanced enough to use uair.

Just practice stuff on your own like l-cancelling and you'll improve. Watch some vids of marths on youtube and try to copy them. Bottom line: spend the time to practice on your own, cause that's what your game needs to get ahead of your competition.

Couple of other things to help learn to do with Marth.

Try not to swing randomly, in the beginning of the match it was clear you were never going to hit him with your aerials, learn to play more on reaction than just mindlessly swinging.

It looks like you play him alot and you guys pick on the fsmash, I'm not saying its a bad thing (most people spam it way to much) but there were some clear spots where instead of aerialing you could have just Fsmashed and could have lead to edgeguarding. One of the areas Marth shines against Falco is edguarding so you should learn it. One option is if you know they are going to upB into the stage a simple counter to jump off fair is usually enough to kill a Falco.

I would say besides learning all the technical stuff better such as l-canceling and such, really try to stay away from mindlessly spamming aerials and work on aerialing with proper spacing/reaction time.

mm good point Arcnatural, I do realise I do that, it's more of a "try to keep moving thing" but I know it puts me in positions where I get hit that could have been avoided.

As for me playing him a lot, that is true... I usually try to stay away from cheap edgeguarding when playing him and I guess that just followed through into the tournament...
I'm not saying marth's edgeguard is bad, I still try and f air him from the ledge etc..

And aaarghh I want to be quicker by using l-cancells like everyone has said and for some reason I just can't make that play in... but I guess practice will do it :S

There is no such thing as cheap edgeguarding. Get that mentality out of your head.

The only reason you're missing so many l-cancels is because you need to spend more time practicing on your own.

Yeah, i used to think that edgeguarding was pretty cheap, so I didn't do it. But now everyone I play does it, and its more of the "if you can do it, go ahead" sort of mentality. Plus you should be playing at your absolute best, and for Marth that means being gay near the edge.

Marth is the king of edgeguarding. If you don't want to do it then Marth isn't the character for you.

SHFFLing more Nairs would've made you move so much faster and get so much more done there

I'm saying this based on the Falco player.

Whenever they jumped, it was either a swing and miss due to them not being close together, swing and hit, or both of the players being far away from each other. That's when the Falco shot the laser - at far range. There wasn't a lot of that going on either, he wasn't taking advantage of the distance between them.

He could've shffl'd nairs close range to the falco 2 or 3 times for some good chunks of damage then go back on defense and mindgame a bit - dance a little, throw out some quick pokes to make him a little confused, and the whatnot.

He has a pretty solid Marth though :)

I hafta agree with UMBC. There's a lot of tech to be acquired just from working on your own especially with L canceling and SHFFLs. Something else to work on for that match is your chaingrabbing. M2K is a great Marth to watch if you wanna learn how to 0-death Falcos. He's the nuts at it.

This is going to sound wierd but... What is a good way to go about practicing l-cancelling?
ie. a series of SFFLs to do... (n-air- f-air anything)

I know how to do it I just can't put it into context of how I would consistantly use it in a fight...

Its as easy as it sounds to incorporate L-canceling in a match. Just press L/R every time you land while doing an attack.

You basically use it all fight long when you step up your level in the advanced tech department and it becomes pretty automatic to just give L a small push right as you land. It's basically what allows your Marth to fair them across the screen cause you can jump again immediately after landing or Fsmash if you're in tipper range. I've been at it for only 2 months and the best thing I can tell you is practice. Make yourself remember to do it as much as you can. Yeah it'll be hard to do that in the heat of a battle at first but before long it becomes totally automatic.
