up smash combo

As many of you know, Marth's up smash is probably one of his least used moves since its knockback is relatively aweful unless tipped and the move itself is very situational.

on a good note, you can use its weak knockback to combo into a foward smash (which is usually in perfect tipper range) at higher percentages

basically, rather than using the up smash on a character who is above you, you use it in the ground against a character who is horizontal with you and at a relatively close range and follow it up with a foward smash. Thats it! plus since it is an upsmash, it can be used right out of a dash making this easy to utilize if you can pull it off.

and yes, this isnt the best way to approach someone but either way it is a combo

i would say the upsmash has a little less range than marths grab.

now for those thinking "why wouldnt you just grab them then?" the answer is becuase throws dont combo into anything at high percentages because people will DI and Tech

Regardless of what you think or have seen (like me vs Forward round 3 evo east), up smash is a terrible move. I only use it when I'm messing around. In any situation where you can use up smash, there is another move that would be better.

I'm wondering why you wouldn't just use an f-smash. I mean, they're within range, right? It's not like f-smash has that much more lag than an u-smash.

U-smash to F-smash LOOKS sexy, but your opponent has to be near brain-dead to NOT DI correctly or jump away from your tipper.
Even techchasing on platforms with the U-smash is fairly useless, unless you're looking to make them think you're going for an U-tilt...

WAIT
You SHOULD go for the U-tilt instead!

It took you this long to figure out the "counting coup" combo?
The name comes from the Native American coup stick (coup is French influence) where they would hit their opponents with a stick instead of killing them. Instead of killing someone, Marth slaps them away with his sword and it leads right to a F-smash (usually tips).
When you learn to work with it, it's great. Even when they tech (which is rarely, for some reason), they will tech in place almost every time and get tipped. Remember to charge that F-smash.
And, yes, it looks sexy too.

This has been talked to death, so many people have claimed it and so many topics made about it. hylian was the most recent to discuss it I due believe.

The upsmash is like fox's fair, it sucks, but you can use it can get results..results less than something else but results none theless. Upsmash to f-smash? No, its a horrible idea, it should only be done if you screw up with an up-smash and it happens to work out..putting upsmashing into your game besides the once a lue moon smash and it will cost you.

I used to do this, I don't know why I don't anymore. It covers more range than one would initially think if I recall.

Yeah, u-smash really doesn't have use at all. You can kill light characters easily on perhaps Yoshi's Story when it's tippered and get a good laugh or two, but there are better options...

It can catch people off guard because it's weird, so they will have a good chance of missing their tech, and when they do tech they generally tech in place, so F-smash them. A lot of the time it'll happen to lead to the F-smash tip.
Get better with the U-smash.
And Fox's F-air.

You can only make **** so good tommy.

Actually the up-smash did have one use for me, I did it when spacy or falcon died directly above me in tipper range of the up-smash.. of course both are hard to kill vertically so they would have to have a pretty % on them...thats just for mixing things up.

I so made a thread about this and claimed it to be the "Hyli Combo" already. XD.

Mine was mostly a joke thread making fun of the TGM combo though >_>.

The only thing you can do with Usmash that you can't with the others is use it out of your shield. Many people are suprised by this and it can lead to a fsmash pretty easily.

Other then that, it is just funny and fun to techchase with usmash or hit someone with it randomly and yell Hyli combooo XD.

Usmash is not too tourny friendly though.

This is irrelevant to the topic at hand, but I just thought that I'd ask the question instead of making a whole thread about it.

Does USmash out of shield have any use at all against a character approaching you from above? (A Ganondorf coming down at you, Y. Link coming down with DAir, Falco if the opponent is sloppy and misses their fastfall + short-hop, etc.)

It is very situational but a combo that I find useful agains med or fast fallers at low precentages is: up smash when horizontle to your opponent, they should end up above you so go into a tipped up smash, from here up-tilt, u-air to finish it off.

Yeah, Up Smash is pretty good as a forward smash, but when you miss you're pretty vulnerable.

No it isnt...First off, when you miss with an up smash your vulnerable, and ALSO if you miss with a Fsmash your vulnerable....that is a horrible distinction from both moves as it is a similarity. Second, the forward smash hits your foe with a whopping amount of horizontal direction as opposed to crappy vertical direction which is harder to finish an opponent with. You can also edgeguard with the Fsmash. Usmash is nowhere near as good as an Fsmash....

ahh..yes, iv used this techinque. I like it alot because like you said it deals high damage. I also find that it works well near ledges so that you can send your opponent far off if you hit them with the tip of the sword on forward smash.

Yea, my fremont community calls it an "Eddie Combo", because he's (Velox) been using this as marth for the past year now. Works well against peach, because it's an insta-tipper for a wide range of percent.
