I made a promise that I would write smaller blog entries every now and then. Today’s the day.
I remember when I first found out about the new additions to Melee. New B attacks and new dodges were expected. But, at the time, I didn’t expect them to add teching or DI.
Now I wonder what they could add to Brawl that would completely take me by surprise. Since Melee was released, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and experience about game design and game development. Once I get a feel for a director’s history or personality, it becomes easy to predict the future of their games. I predicted that Nintendo would put a speaker inside the Wiimote three or four months before they announced it. At the time, I was ridiculed for suggesting such a wild possibility. Also, with the upcoming game Rock Band, it was easy to spot where they were going. I predicted that they would add five more buttons at the end of the guitar, and that they would design improvising sections for the Vocals and Drums.
So I decided to make a short list of additions to smash that are possible and easy to overlook for Brawl.<!--more-->

1) What if this ending credits mini game were controlled using the Wiimote pointer? Seems logical enough. No big deal right? But you didn’t think about it.
2) What if the AI were actually competent. What if the computers displayed personalities when they fought instead of being cold robots? Or what if the AI could be updated to play more like the best players?
3) What if they added grab and throw reversals like in other fighters?
4) What if they added a more diverse taunting system. I’d love it if I could do Kirby’s victory dance in the middle of a battle.
It’s good to keep making predictions for the future as to not be taken by surprise…because, we’re going to be taken by surprise anyway, and it’s going to be quite an explosion.
