Melee is my all time favorite game and the final smash in brawl is what turned me off to it. The final smash seemed stupid and broken for competitive style. From what I've seen of Playstation allstars, they didn't get the special combo thing right either, though I have not played the game.
However, lately I have been learning to play street fighter iv, a game which made super and ultra combos a strategic move that one has to combo into and can be useless or effective depending on ones skill.
The character Yun's supper in SFIV allows him to basically chain all his moves together into a custom combo for the time limit of his super. EXACTLY LIKE TURBO MODE IN PROJECT M! Although he sort of glows blue, which I like.
I know that smash bros isn't about using damage to charge revenge gauges and saivng an ultimate finishing move to destroy your opponent, but I don't see Yun's super as being that way either. I think if implemented properly, being able to briefly activate project m turbo mode, it could be an optional new element to the game that would not interfere with the competitive aspect. This could be availible at 100% damage or something, or for casual play it could be like a final smash floaty bubble thing you have to brake to obtain.
It would eliminate the work of creating a unique super for each character, and the combos would be character specific and unique because they would have to be improvised anyway.
Improvised turbo/super combos, if not overpowered, in my opinion stays true to the heart and soul of smash bros because unlike the rehearsed combo oriented SFIV, it would still be natural improvised jazzy goodness.
