Hello,
I've recently been playing Smash A LOT at college and I can wave dash and shield grab tech falls etc. But I seem to be having problems with unexperienced players that can't wave dash or do anything they just roll around a lot. Any tips? Also, is there a good video showing when exactly to l cancel an aerial / a Marth SHFFL video?

Being new is no excuse. There is a brilliant Q and A thread on this forum, and I'd advise you to use it.

Anyhoo, Just follow them and use a dash attack timed to hit them in their vulnrable frames. Don't hit where they are, hit where they will be.

And as for L-Cancels, just practice with Links Dair, you'll see the difference pretty darn quickly.

Well, alot of people say that once you just start learning advanced techs, you won't be better off than noobs because you're still struggling to incorporate all that stuff into your game. So i'd suggest you give it time and get more comfortable with all the techs you've learned.

And, well, more specifically, dash dancing and lots of spot dodging works wonders against newer players <_< more of a temporary fix i guess

As No Face said, it'll take some time to incorporate advanced techs appropriately but to take out Noobs who roll and/or spotdodge a lot just find their pattern. Being that they will most likely lack mindgames and will go for the most obvious, straight forward attacks, such as rolling behind you and going for a smash of some sort, just form the best assumption you can as to the way they react to your movements. Once you have done that you should be able to bait your opponent into doing something which will leave them open to attack. One example of this would be to run at your opponent then WD back. There's a good chance a noob will attempt to roll behind you but, being that you WD'd back, you will have them at a disadvantage when they perform the roll because once they're in those frames of stun when they can't do anything you can just do an F-smash or start up a Fair combo on them. This is only based with the noobs I've faced though so your's might be different.

Looks like these guys beat me to it regarding the advice. Hopefully you don't have to deal with the F Smash happy Marths. Those are SO boring to play. :/

All the best in improving your game. =)

haha agreed

All it takes is patience. It took me around 4-6 weeks from when I first started playing smash till I could beat the average joe, and I was practicing, reading stuff on-line, watching vids, etc. Keep with it, and within a couple months you may be able to enter a tournament while saving face.

What I do: Walk towards them until they roll behind me(but be far enough so they can't hit me), where I take a grab and it's a stock over for them. Repeat a few times.

There's a dude at my work who's a C-Stick Marth. Rolls ALOT, too. He beats all the guys around the office, but I see all his attacks as SO predictable. I can't whoop him though, since we now have different break times.

If you have trouble landing attacks out of that roll they're doing, you might as well just grab them. If they can't DI, that's actually better, because you get an easy tipper fsmash out of it. That really seems like the best way to deal with roll-spamming, if you ask me... also, you l-cancel an aerial when you touch the ground. Why would you hit L anywhere else? The reason why you l-cancel is to shorten the custom landing animation that every aerial in this game has, so if you know that, it just makes sense.

if he/she rolls alot just wait till the roll is over and punish them. it isnt that difficult of a concept. it may be boring and repetive but hey do what you gotta do.

When players roll alot like kirby or jigglypuff you have to be a fast grabber and know exactly what to do what combo and how ur opponent is gonna respond to it. once you know that u win if ur smart about it.

This is some helpful advice. Since I enrolled in college recently, I've found out that a lot of people play Smash on a regular basis. An old friend plays as Fox and doesn't use any advanced techniques. Just a lot of dash attacks and rolling. Since I'm trying to incorporate SHL and technig into my game now, I've got significantly worse than him. Suppose it'll just take time.
