I doubt trolls are truly ruining the internet (although a flame war did divert me from YouTube for half of May, so maybe they are)
Anyway, my critiques on the methods:
1. Software: We have some basic software here, and it works decently if you don't know any bad words or don't want your screen littered with them. This seems like a pretty good idea and some decent software does wonders. However, I doubt the XBox Live censoring doesn't work nearly as well as they wish it would.
2. Armed Mods: Given how well our mods are doing, I'd say this is great. (we are also blessed with mostly good guys in general) I"m doubting karma works at all, considering most trolls don't give a crap about whatever they're trolling on.
3. Unify the culture: No. If anything, the culture is being unified by the undeniably evil /b/. Let's NOT continue that.
4. Up the stakes for membership: I don't think so, at least in terms of charging money. The Internet is so wonderful mainly because it's free. Even a one-time fee will turn 99% of users away, good and bad. This will ruin the internet even faster. Sticking with one name is a great idea, but it'd be hard to do. And passing an anti-anonymity law will not help things.
5. Anti-anonymity laws: Terrible Idea. Anonymity is another Internet staple. That's gone, and so are 90% of users. The Internet will become much more unsafe (you think predators will use their real names/ages? There's no way you can regulate all of that.). And this will turn off basically all minor users, killing the internet even faster.
If you ask me, the best way to end trolling is to get rid of 4chan. Let's face it. Probably 99% of trolls are /b/tards. Get rid of their home base, and they'll probably get lives or kill themselves. Sure there'll be free speech issues, but look at all the stuff going on in 4chan, most of it is illegal. Minors accessing porn, CP, cyberterrorism, cyberbullying. Pretty much the only decent thing on 4chan is the occasional meme. Just get rid of the **** place.
