It's not random tripping, that I'm certain of. There is no way that stupid mechanic would return, espescially after Sakurai said it wouldn't. (he wasn't entirely clear if tripping would entirely be gone, but I think it's safe to say Random Tripping is not in Smash 4)


It's either a hint that the prievous tripping poses may be used for other circumstances, (like landing in the middle of an aerial attack, perhaps?) or a hint at Banana Peels or even Diddy Kong coming back.

Sakurai remembers the backlash of adding tripping to Brawl. That's why he removed it. Who in their right mind would re-add it back into the game? Definitely NOT the Sakurai we know. He'll keep his word.

Besides, of all the changes so far, why is this one pose the only one to cause a reaction like this?

We don't know what changes were made, and there are many things we haven't even seen in motion.

Pikachu's pose wasn't even the point of the pic; it was the outlines. He said nothing about the animation. But I don't think Pikachu sitting down represents anything major.

Everything will be fine. Just wait.

Assuming this is a reference to the random tripping mechanic (which was confirmed to be removed), this is more-or-less a case of attempting to find patterns where none exists. It's just an almost-meaningless update with not much significance whatsoever, so there really is no logical reason to look into this further than it should. Nothing more, nothing less.

Why would Masahiro Sakurai altogether announce the removal of the universally-despised random tripping mechanic, only for months later to reinstate it for whatever reason? It would damage his credibility harshly among his fan-base.

Again, this is either a result of Diddy Kong's Banana Peels, a tripping-inducing item, or some sort of new animation for Pikachu.

I think that this picture is either Pikachu tripping by something (not random, it's forced like a banana peel or by an attack) or it's absolutely nothing at all. With something that was universally panned by Smash fans and Sakurai saying that we won't see it, I highly doubt that he will give his fans the middle finger and put it back in the game. While this looks like Pikachu is tripping, this might be a preserved animation or it might be something else.

Come to think of it, I think that this is most likely the ending to Pikachu's down taunt. That would make sense as Pikachu doesn't look upset like most characters do when they trip.

Yeh, like other people have said, don't take this theory seriously. We've already had confirmation that random tripping would be removed, so this picture is either significant to absolutely nothing, or it's part of an animation for something like banana peel tripping. Or a taunt. Just relax and enjoy Pikachu's special moment.

Well, since it's the developers who take this picture, they have access to the debug menu, which means they can decide which animation the model is supposed to be in. They probably just set Pikachu in a cute stance just because.

I freaked out after the whole "enemey from Samus' past may appear at any moment" during the Pyrosphere reveal. As well as during the whole "possible Pokemon reveal". Those were considerably big slaps to the face though, unlike this case.

I for one am trying to keep a bit calm this time though, and this time I'm not at all concerned as it makes no sense for random tripping to come back at this point, and there are loads of other possibilities for why Pikachu is in that pose. If it did come back though (which I can't see happening) I admit I would cry.

If I recall correctly Sakurai said in an interview that tripping is removed.

This could also mean that moves can no longer cause tripping (though this complicates Diddy's nanners) and that the image of Pikachu is from another of its animations.
