Training With Yoshi: Suggestions?

Hi, everyone! Rookie member, here. I thought I'd warm up to the Yoshi boards by asking for some pointers, if that's alright!

I'm practicing my Yoshi game -- mostly offline -- and I wanted to hear from some more seasoned Yoshi mains. I know of some staple practices, like analyzing your own replays and hunting for tournament battle videos that play host to effective Yoshi players, but I want to know if there are some particular major aspects of Yoshi that I should work on mastering in particular, and how I might go about doing so. Any suggestions on that? I've been mostly going with the flow, sparring with local human opponents and such.

Welcome to the Yoshi boards. Probably better to post in the social over a new thread cause it just floods the board with threads and because people only check their alerts (threads they have watched most likely) they almost never check the full boards for anything new.

Anyways with Yoshi, it's nothing like Brawl Yoshi. Don't use pivot grab or Bair as much anymore and get a feel of using your aerials and eggs more often to stuff people.

Okay, social from now on! Duly noted! Thanks for the heads up.

I see; pivot grab I never utilized enough, but I was good on bair, so this is a good thing to know early. Thanks!

Well, new topics are okay, but this probably didn't need its own topic. =P

Welcome! I'd say that, for this game in general, that you should practice ground movement and our OOS options, as well as our quick options to stuff approaches (mainly jab). We can jump OOS in this game, which opens up a lot of options, so you should get comfortable with them, especially if you're used to the shield being a cage that we get trapped in.

Welcome to the boards Sushi Shea. Since you're familiar with Yoshi already, he has been buffed significantly since Brawl. Jab is a lot better and I usually favor that over Ftilit (kinda meh). With Out of Shield options buff, Yoshi is quick to punish with an OoS Nair or OoS Jump Cancelled Usmash. Master the egg toss slide and short hop egg toss approaches, as they can halt and also create openings. If your opponent is shield happy, break it with Yoshi bomb for fantastic results. Dtilt is also better now and sets up for spikes with ease.

Practice b-reversals with egg lay. As a Yoshi player, you absolutely must master egg throwing. Practice throwing them below you to cover approaches/landing as well as straight up to hit airborne opponents and force air dodges which can be punished.

recognize moments where you can incorporate a sideb, i'd say.

since it hops into the air on startup, you can use it to dodge some projectiles, grabs, and down tilts / smashes, then punish. it's especially good against ness players that use sideb a lot.

don't forget you can jump while rolling, too.
