I'm going to flat-out say that I have lots and lots of more confidence for Kawashima as a character, since uniqueness seems to factor alot more than relavnance other such topics thanks to Rosalina. :estatic:

That does seem to be the case. If Brain Age does have an upcoming anniversary, that should be the perfect time to reveal him. Just the image of Mario and them solving math problems in a "classroom" is hilarious.

Release date wise, I think Kawashima will be revealed on May (Which was when Brain Age was first released) at its 9th anniversary. Or at any Nintendo direct at any time, he is literally the perfect troll character to show off in any kind of event.
I honestly can't wait how Sakurai will do the trailer, maybe like you said Mario will be busy writing math problems for a test, or maybe Dr. Kawashima talks to you directly how he's going to train your body and a little bit of your mind in the next Smash Bros., then in sequence shows gameplay of Kawashima. XD

It's already a big series Sakurai can easily take for a character or other content. I think he'll take the character route. With crazy ideas like Wii Fit Trainer, it's too good to pass up on.

I have to say, of the character ideas I've heard before, Dr. Kawashima is one of the worst. Other than obvious jokes like the Tetris L-block, it's hard for me to think of someone I'd prefer Dr. Kawashima to.

Rosalina doesn't help, because, you know, Rosalina fulfills the basic requirements of inclusion and Dr. Kawashima does not. She's not that unpopular, she's not that unexpected, she's not that bizarre, and she's not a real person's head.

Sorry to come in and be a hater. But there's a limit to how much "zaniness" is actually appealing.

Your opinion I guess, but I really don't find it disturbing to based on a real person, if you try think that way, you are going to end up hating him and ignoring his potential. :p

Glad you joined the supporters of the floating head, I completely agree too, he would definitely be a very unique character with his distinct look and new kind of attacks involving education.
I hope Dr. Kawashima makes it, he honestly feels very inevitable after we got Wii Fit Trainer, with all this ridiculous bizarre characters, it's hard not to pass up Kawashima.

Honestly the best part about Kawashima he requires (a very low) licensing cost for the real Kawashima to approve to have his floating head into the game. The actual head never appeared in Brawl, probably hinting that it requires it. I think that it's somewhat of a good thing, because Sakurai wouldn't really go into all the papers just for Kawashima to appear only as an AT or trophy. Like Geno in a somewhat similar way.

Him, yeah, I agree. Kawashima probably wasn't big enough to be in Brawl, but now he could probably get in. Especially since it looks like Uniqueness is a key factor, and Kawashima would be really unique, more of a tricky fighter, I'd guess. Sakurai wouldn't go through the paperwork just to add him as an AT.

This thread any day! Dr. Kawashima would be very unique. If they can put in WFT, why not Kawashima?
Because Dr. Kawashima was not created by Nintendo, does not belong to Nintendo, did not originate in a video game, is a floating head, etc. And, oh yeah, is a real person. Not named after a real person (before you bring up Dr. Wright), but a representation of a real person.

Uniqueness does not outweigh those problems. There's no evidence that uniqueness is Sakurai's only or primary consideration for Smash 4. It matters, yes, but while the newcomers this time are all unique in some way, that's hardly the only thing notable about them. One is a major 3rd-party star heavily associated with the NES/SNES and Nintendo handhelds, one is from a big selling casual franchise, one is a rising star in the biggest video game franchise in the world, and the last is a representative from a very high selling game/accessory for the Wii. All of them are perfectly conventional as far as originating in video games and being people-shaped, not floating heads.

Wii Fit Trainer is not on that level of bizarreness or breaking with previous games, no matter how hard you try to pretend she is. The only similarity is that they're both from "non-games" if you wanna put it that way (one being a fitness program, the other educational).

If you want to support an educational character, how about support Dr. Lobe from the Big Brain Academy series?

He's created by and belongs to Nintendo, has a much more Smash friendly form, and can provide many of the same "educational" attacks as Dr. Kawashima. He has his cute little baton and hat, he could make use of the timer stand thingie he's on, and he could have a move set that's unique in many of the same ways. The Big Brain Academy games did not sell as well as Brain Age (over 35 million), but they did quite respectably with over 10 million copies. That's more in sales than many series that are in Smash, including Fire Emblem.

I'd be ok with Dr. Lobe being in to rep the educational games. But I could never support Dr. Kawashima. He does not belong and I would actively dislike his inclusion.

So, question number one: What exactly makes Dr. Lobe so much different than Kawashima overall? What would Lobe do? Besides, it seems to me as if Kawashima is overall repping a much more well known series. I didn't even know who Dr. Lobe was before this thread popped up.

Question number two: So, what if the Regginator is in SSB4? It's the same exact situation. If Reg is in, why not Kawashima?

And yeah, I'll go out and admit it. So maybe Kawashima is a bit on the unlikely side. But we can still dream, can't we? ;)

And let's not let this spiral out of control from a debate to an argument. I respect your opinion and all that too.

I explained it perfectly well in my post, why are you asking this question?

Dr. Kawashima was not created by Nintendo, does not belong to Nintendo, did not originate in a video game, is a floating head, etc. And, oh yeah, is a real person. He's not merely named after a real person (before you bring up Dr. Wright), but is a representation of a real person.

Whereas Dr. Lobe was created by and belongs to Nintendo, has a much more Smash friendly form, and can provide many of the same "educational" attacks as Dr. Kawashima.

I said all that stuff in my post. There's no indication, whatsoever, that Sakurai has relaxed his rules about only allowing characters originating in video games in. There's no indication that he'd see Dr. Kawashima, someone who has appeared in games on other systems, as a special case who is on the level of Sonic, Mega Man or Snake. He'd still require outside consent. What's so special about Dr. Kawashima that Sakurai should go through the trouble to seek it? And why would I think that Dr. Kawashima would want to be in?

There's literally no reason to think he's even possible as a character, much less that he has a chance in hell. It's not going to happen.
What would Lobe do?
What would Dr. Kawashima do? You ask this question as if Dr. Kawashima has a completely obvious move set while Dr. Lobe does not. It would be no harder to make up a move set for Dr. Lobe. At any rate, I'm not a Dr. Lobe supporter, I'm just saying if you want to support a character from an educational game, Dr. Lobe is at least plausible, while Dr. Kawashima is never going to happen.
Besides, it seems to me as if Kawashima is overall repping a much more well known series. I didn't even know who Dr. Lobe was before this thread popped up.
The two Big Brain Academy games have sold around 10 million copies. I don't know why you haven't heard of it. *shrug*
Question number two: So, what if the Regginator is in SSB4? It's the same exact situation. If Reg is in, why not Kawashima?
Reggie is not going to be in. So it's irrelevant.

I hope he's playable.

Popular
Million seller series
Kid friendly
Floating head
Not a fighter(something sakurai likes)

He has everything going for him to be honest. He would rep the educational series.

"Not being a fighter" is not something Sakurai likes.

Previously he said that it disqualifies a character from being in the game (hence why Villager was not in Brawl). Now it no longer disqualifies them. That's far away from "liking" it.
You know his floating head did originate in a videogame, I don't think a floating head originated in real life. :9
It's a representation of the real Dr. Kawashima's head. You get my point.

The most I'd hope for is an AT. But I wouldn't be surprised if he got no reference whatsoever.

Not being a fighter has been said to be a plus. Sakurai has actively stated he doesn't want fighting game characters. Yes, some characters have been seen as too non-violent for Smash by its creator but this is not a reason to disregard Kawashima as his devil side is clearly shown.

I must point out that he said he didn't want fighting game characters. That doesn't mean he doesn't want fighters at all. He just doesn't want ones that originated in a fighting game.

I have seen forms of violence before during my play through of Concentration Training he has been shown of him being hit by sunflower seeds in the title screen. That's the most notable form of violence, even though the violence is very little.

Yes but has he not also been shown to be a strict teacher, harsh in his methods and in possession of a fearsome temper? That is the sort of thing I'm talking about. His character is very clearly not the harmless softy type that prevented Nintendog and the likes from being fighters.

If he was mean in his methods, I don't think he would have been a great teacher to have in Brain Age. He's pretty harmless, but he pushes your brain to the limits to the point where you know he's not a softy, violence is done to him only in the form of entertainment, similar to how the Pitfall was meant to have a good prank with your animal neighbors. I can kinda see why Nintendog was not included despite the series being very popular. :0
I can see where you are coming from.

If you just meant that he's not from a fighting game (like Street Fighter or Tekken), then yes, but that's pretty much irrelevant.

It's not a point in his favor, as there are hundreds of characters who aren't from fighting games. It's more like, a reason to exclude Ryu or Sukapon. I think the idea is that he wants characters who, by being in Smash, are in a new genre of game. But that's the vast majority of characters out there.

Also seriously, I don't understand what's so appealing about a middle-aged, chubby Japanese guy's head. What's the matter with supporting Dr. Lobe instead?

And, as I pointed out, Dr. Kawashima has not only appeared on Nintendo consoles, so he's more akin to a 3rd-party character. And he is in no way on the level of Sonic or Mega Man.

Dr. Lobe doesn't have a really appealing design as the floating head himself, the fact he's based on the real professor is the appeal of him, it's a bizarre and entertaining design., something I really like a lot about him.
Even if he was a "third party" he has very close association with Nintendo as Professor Layton.

It's not so much the real world basis for me as the polygonal floating head with Rayman-esque disjointed hands. It's a unique and wacky character design, yet one that has had both odd parts (floating and disjointed hands) implemented in multiple regular fighting games with no problems. It's both brilliant and easily workable.

Now, on another subject, you keep saying he's not a Nintendo exclusive character because his series appears elsewhere. Tell me, has he had anything more than that one Xbox game outside of Nintendo? Has his giant floating head every shown up on another system? If not, can you really claim the giant floating head we're pushing for is the same character as that polygonal professor? Is the floating head not a Nintendo exclusive?

It has implications because they'd obviously need Dr. Kawashima's permission. And it demonstrates that he's not so close to Nintendo that he won't take his likeness to other consoles.

The point is that he's not a first-party or second-party person/employee/character, even if the specific representation is more closely connected to Nintendo.

If Sakurai ever bothered to comment about it, I'd imagine the response would be as blunt as his response about Villager vs. Tom Nook, something along the lines of "Dr. Kawashima is a real person, why would I add him?"

Because he has something unique going for him, despite being based on a real person. Should I get rid of K. Rool because he's based on an alligator? Why specifically a real person, is there anything absolute chaotically wrong about it, I don't really think so. Should I get rid of Pikachu, because there was a Pokemon app for the iPhone and iPad systems? Iwata is also close friends with the real professor himself. That shows how close he is to Nintendo. He has not commented on being realistic, but the closest statement you'll get is photorealistic characters not blending well, but Kawashima is a polygonal head, so it doesn't count.

Dr. Kamiwasha or whatever his name is is more wacky and noticeable.

Dr. Lobe on the other hand isn't really know that much.

Compare the two and kawiishima seems like the better choice.

I'm not against the idea of Dr. Lobe, but Dr. Kawashima seems like the better overall choice for a character from the educational genre. Adding Dr. Lobe before Kawashima is like adding Tiki Tong before K. Rool.

YES! This is the explanation I was going for, but I didn't know how to put it.
