Tournament Preparedness and Etiquette?

So I'll be attending my first major tournament (by which I mean more than 20 contenders, and people from all around the South Atlantic region) so I wanted to get a little input from all of you smashers!

Are there any "unwritten rules" that I should/need-to know about?
What's the environment generally like? o.O
What's the general etiquette before/after/in-between matches?

I'm really hoping to keep the Brawling to in-game. Don't want to make any enemies accidentally :p

I'd say bring water, be respectful to everyone, especially to the TO. Respect the venue.

If you're playing pools find the people in your pool. If you don't know them just ask who they are and if they're in your pool or if they can help find people who are in your pool, same applies to brackets.

Going with the above, don't be shy. When you arrive people will probably already be playing friendlies on setups. You're never gonna play any if you don't say anything, so just go up to a TV and ask if you can get in next, and most of the time people'll say yes.

Good luck have fun :) smashers are pretty chill people, you shouldn't have any problems.

Sweet, sounds pretty simple by the sounds of it ^^ Though much nicer than my local 20 and lower count tournies that are extremely anti-new people.

But yes, the tournie I'm headed to uses pools. Which I've heard is more new-guy friendly, so who knows- I might do well :D

dont be shy to jump in on tvs (if your bad tho, dont jump in on really good players playing eachother that often because theyll probably just get annoyed lol)

but do ask good players for a few friendlies and advice

dont stay in one place for too long

take breaks so you dont get a headache

dont forget to eat/bathroom

try not to be nervous in tournament

Wake up early! Most important. That way, you can do what Wenbobular just said. (most importantly, showering)

But luckily, this is a local, so you have the time to shower and prepare. Even practice. Practice what you know.

lol THIS.

Also, don't john (i.e. make excuses), but also don't get super-depressed/self-pity mode "omg I suck so bad" if you get whooped on. There's always going to be someone better (and worse lol).

Also, if you can, I would show up as early as possible. It's way less awkward to sit down and start playing when there's only 2-4 people there so far.

Then I got married and had children. You can't sleep naked when you have children. But, if you don't have children, as the other answers said, you had better never forget to have something handy to grab and put on in an emergency.

I live in "earthquake country," and that is another reason I always wear pajamas now. I never know when I will be out on the sidewalk with the neighbors. I think that should be part of the earthquake preparedness information.

So... I'm going to my first tournament EVER (A local called shockwave... Probs biggest in texas...) and, given my age, don't have transportation. Because of this, I am being given a ride from someone. Does the person giving me a ride need to pay a venue fee to come in and watch some matches, or no?
