As the news for SSB4 draw near in large numbers, I decided to post an old topic I made about Toad and his chances for SSB4 from the NSiders2 forum here. Now many people tend to disregard Toad as a potential Mario newcomer; however, I believe that he deserves better than that through his history, appearancs, and status as an iconic Mario character. This is why I am providing this post to help others understand why Toad deserves a warmer welcome to SSB4 as a possible Mario candidate. The post can be seen below:

I am not sure if he has been mentioned before, but I believe that Toad has a strong chance of making it into SSB4 as a Mario newcomer. I'm sure that some of you might agree while others might not; however, I personally think that he is probably the most underrated Mario candidate. I will state my resons and Toad's moveset below:

Reasons for inclusion:
Toad has been one of the long-runners of the Mario series having appeared since the first installment Super Mario Bros.. Generally, Toad plays a NPC role by helping the Mario Bros. on their journey (such as SMB3). However, there are currently two instances where Toad was not a NPC, but rather a main playable character in the main Mario series. The first of which was Super Mario Bros. 2 where he was one of the four playable characters. His next playable appearance was that of the recent New Super Mario Bros. Wii where Blue Toad and Yellow Toad were playable characters. These two games imply that Toad is capable of fighting and being a hero. Thanks to NSMB Wii, Toad has exceeded the amount of times even Peach has been playable in the main Mario games (she was only playable in SMB2). Toad may also have upcoming playable roles as well. NSMB Mii was a start if it was a real game, and Super Mario 3D Land has Toads rushing off with Mario in the intro, so Toads can perhaps also be playable in this game as well. Also this would make Toad the only playable character from the main Mario games to not be playable in Smash as of yet.

Aside from the main Mario games, Toad is also a frequent sight in the spin-off titles. He is almost always guaranteed to being playable, and in the few times he is not he still makes an appearance as a major host type of character. Toad is the only member of the "Big Eight" Mario characters (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, Yoshi, Wario, DK) to not be playable in Smash as of yet. These eight characters have been recurring since the earliest Mario spin-off games to now in terms of being playable. Toad is also one of the long-running Mario Kart racers and is an important playable character (host in the original games) of the Mario Party series. Toad also has his own game (Wario's Woods) for both the NES and SNES, and he can also bring in elements from this game as well.

Now the reason why I say Toad as opposed to another Mario newcomer is because he is one of the original main Mario characters. Since the beginning it has always been these characters who make appearances in the main games: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and his minions, and Toad (Yoshis make some appearances, but not in every Mario game). Toad would better fit the fifth slot of the Mario series in Smash, and seems more natural to be placed among the four main Mario characters already in Smash. Now Toad is also no random character as well as he is a highly popular character (he is extremely highly merchandised and has many fans). He is also very iconic to his series. Toad has also been highly requested for Smash in both Melee and Brawl (4th in Melee poll behind Bowser, Peach, and Wario [who all are playable now], and second in Brawl polls). Additionally, Toad is the only possibly Mario newcomer (others are Bowser Jr., Paper Mario, and Waluigi) who I see to have no chances of becoming a clone off any other character as Toad's body shape and moves are unique to himself.

Now some people may tend to argue as to why Toad is getting support for SSB4 rather than the Goombas, Koopa Troopas, etc who also belong to large races and make frequent appearances in the series. However, the difference between Toad and Bowser's minions is the fact that Toad is often seen as a single entity and individual who is frequently featured as a major Mario character and has become distinguished through that (much like Yoshi, Birdo, Kamek, etc). The Toads in general also prove to have fighting capability and as of now, it is only the Toads and Yoshis that have been playable in the mainstream Mario games; thus, giving both races more focus, importance, and moveset capability than the other races of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Statistics:

Toad made his first playable appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2 alongside Princess Peach. He is known for being the fastest character in this game (5/5), and as well as the strongest (5/5). However, he has horrible jumps to balance this all out (2/5). These stats are perfect for him in Smash Bros.! Toad would easily be a speedy character who can be one of the faster characters in the game (giving a nod to SMB2). Toad would also have decent power, but amazing superhuman strength that can allow him to pick up and carry his foes with ease. However, he would be a lightweight character and be small in size (a nod to the Mario Kart games as well as his general appearance). This would make him be easily ko'd. Additionally, he would have small jumps as well to further balance this out. Toad's short limbs would also be a problem as they would give him short range. However, this all balances out to make Toad a fair and balanced character.

As a result, Toad would be a very effective hit and run type character. He hits hard; however, he is very fragile and can be defeated easily if not trained properly. We have very few lightweight characters in Smash who are both speedy and power, so I believe Toad would be a great character who can make as a superior Pichu from Melee. Toad will not hurt himself; however, he will make a combination of Pichu's slightly stronger moves and speed into gameplay. Toad can introduce many new concepts into Smash as well. I believe Toad can introduce mid-air grabs and throws into Smash as he is known for picking up, carrying, and throwing objects and enemies in the three notable games he has been playable in (SMB2, NSMB Wii, WW). Toad can also bring in power-up moves from NSMB Wii, and as well as skills such as running up walls which he performed in Wario's Woods. Not to mention that Toad also has the spin-offs to look for as well. Toad can also get uniquely made moves just for him in Smash (mushroom/spore attacks?). He already had an invented one for Brawl (spore counter move), and the fact that all the Mario characters in Brawl also have made-up moves can also allow Toad to get his own uniquely made-up moves based on his properties.

Extra properties:
Toad will be the default colouration (red mushroom cap, blue vest). His alternate colourations will be Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, and Green Toad. Possible extra colourations include Purple Toad, a Toadette colouration (pink cap, red vest), and a Toadsworth colration (brown cap, purple vest). An extra one I thought of would be Toad with the original Super Mushroom colouration (orange with red spots) to make a throwback to the original Super Mario Bros. game.

Arrival: Toad will arrive in either two ways:

1) Toad comes out of a subcon door like in SMB 2

2) Toad drives in with his Toad Kart.

3) Toad steps out of a Toad House (which disappears behind him after stepping out)

Peach's B move counter-arguement:
I have a hunch that some people might argue against Toad's inclusion using this reasoning. However, what many people do not know is that this problem can easily be fixed by giving Peach a new move. In both Melee and Brawl, Toad was used as Peach's B move. However, now that Toad is a reasonable newcomer with Wario finally being added in (the final of the 3 from the Mario most requested newcomers from the melee poll), he can get out of this status. How so? Give Peach another move like her vibe powers from SPP, Perry the Parasol as a charge attack, or even Toadsworth (her new loyal guardian). Any of these will do (I especially think the latter is better as Toadsworth somewhat replaced Toad's role as Peach's companion in the newer Mario games while Toad himself became playable or with another role). Peach now has many more new attacks to use from as during the days from prior to Melee, she really had nothing to work with (hence, look at how many made-up moves she has!).

Generic counter-arguement:
Toad is a generic species, no one is denying it; however, does this mean that he cannot be playable because of that? According to Smash, nothing implies this; infact, it is the opposite. Generic species have been playable since the first Smash Bros.. Yoshi is a prime example. He is rarely stated as a character, and is mentioned a lot as a species in Smash (look at his trophies). Yoshi even burrowed Blue Yoshi's flying ability as his final smash in Brawl. Even Toad's trophies mentions both the species and the actual character named Toad. Anyways, there are also the Pokemon to consider as well. In melee, we got Mr.G&W who was pretty much a generic representative of the characters from the Game & Watch games. In Brawl, we got ROB who was also another generic member of his species (though a significant one). Like all of these characters, Toad belongs to a popular and significant generic species, and like them there is a character who is significant as well (the Toad character). Therefore, this actually helps Toad's chances as any Toad appearance (aside from differentiated ones like Toadsworth and Toadette) can help Toad's chances as he will be repping all Toads (like how all Yoshi is repping his species and so on).

Moveset:
Finally, Toad's moveset. Many often ask what Toad will do, so here are my ideas of how Toad can fight in a Smash Bros. game:

Physical moves:

Standard A [combo])- Toad's standard A move is a standard punch. His double A would be a second punch. Finally the third A in the AAA combo would be a kick which he does by planting his two hands on the ground and giving a kick with his two stubby feet. The combo has decent power; however, its effectiveness is not the best as Toad has a short range with his small limbs.

A Up(tilt))- Toad gives a small headbutt upwards. He does this with a little jump. Weak, but can send opponents upwards with a minimal damage, but decent knockback.

A side (tilt))- Toad extends his one foot outwards (his foot is enlargened in size to make it more effective). It does barely any knockbaack (like any A side move); however, it is effective for stopping combos and does decent damage. Toad also performs this move quickly.
A down (tilt)- Toad gives a small, but quick slap/clap attack.

Aerial Standard A)- Toad performs a spin jump. It is weak; however, if timed correctly it can even deflect projectile attacks. Origination:New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Sports Mix

Aerial A Up)- Toad gives a quick kick upwards. He does this by rotating his body (same way as Mario and Luigi perform their moves).

Aerial A side+front)- Toad's meteor smash. Toad performs this move by smashing his head in an arched shaped pathway. This move is very effective in attack opponents who are attempting to recover.

Aerial A side+back)- Toad makes a small rotational kick behind him. It is weak, but fast!
Aerial A down)-

Option 1: Toad performs a ground pound. His ground pound gets stronger depending on how far his fall is. Note: This move is not as strong as the Bower or Yoshi bomb, but it performs similarly.Origination:New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Option 2:Toad places his mushroom shaped head downwards and smashes downward. Think of Pikachu's aerial down A, but with no electricity effects. Perhaps, spores can burst out of his cap if he hits a hard surface or an opponent hard enough.
Dash Attack)-Toad headbutts his opponents after running. Think of how Toad headbutts his foes in the Mario Strikers games. Origination:Mario Smash Football, Mario Strikers Charged

Smashes:

Smash Up)- Toad charges up his mushroom head, and gives a mighty headbutt upwards. Think of Pichu's Up Smash from Melee, but now think of Toad performing this move. This move was unique to Pichu, so I think it would be nice to see it return in Toad's case. Origination:Super Smash Bros. Melee/Unique move

Smash Side)- Toad charges up a fiery kick. After charging, Toad releases a mighty kick and if charged up long enough, his kick will spew fire. This is inspired by Toad's kick from the Mario Strikers games. Toad also performs strong kicks in Wario's Woods. The fiery effect is inspired by his special move: The Fire Meteor from Mario Strikers Charged. Origination:Wario's Woods, Mario Smash Football, Mario Strikers Charged

Smash Down)- Toad puts his head on the ground, and spins around with his feet kick wildly in a rotation like pattern. Toad spins more faster if the move is charged longer. This is much like a break-dance like move. Origination:Unique move

Throws:
Grab)- Toad will hold onto his foe with one hand. Often, the opponent will have to crouch down due to Toad's short height.

Grab+attack)- Toad will pummel his opponents with his large head.

Throw+Up)- Toad will bounce his opponents off his head.

Throw+Forward Side)- Toad will throw his opponents in a similar way that he did it in SMB2. A retro throw sound from SMB2 will also be heard to add up to the nostalgia.

Throw+Backwards)- Toad will wrench his opponents away to the best of his ability. He will then kick them with his two feet. One of the weaker throws.

Throw+Down)- Toad will slam his opponents downwards. Then he will take a small jump, and slam down on his opponents with his head. Spores will fly out showing the power of the move.

Special Moves:

Standard B)

*Option 1: Ice Ball - Toad throws ice balls from the effects of the Ice Flower of NSMB Wii. Toad was capable of throwing ice balls in his ice form in NSMB Wii. These ice balls are slower than Mario and Luigi's fireballs, but they have a small chance of freezing Toad's opponents momentarily. Origination: NSMB Wii

*Option 2: Mushroom Sprout - Toad will cause a mushroom (about his own size) to pop up near the ground in front of him. If an opponent is near him, the mushrooms will target the opponent and strike him/her. These mushrooms are not powerful, but they can throw Toad's opponents upwards. They can also be used to deflect projectiles and block attacks. Think of the Toad's homing mushrooms from Mario Sports Mix. Origination: Mario Sports Mix

*Option 3: Spore Burst/Counter - Think of Peach's B move with Toad emitting spores, but as a chargeable move. Toad charges up, and then emits spores as an attack. Additionally, it can also work as a counter move instead (like how it did for the last two Smash games). Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl

Up B/Recover)-

Option 1: Propeller Toad - Toad gains the power of the Propeller Mushroom from NSMB Wii and gains a Propeller Cap. He then spins upwards with it to a great vertical height, and then spins downwards. While descending, he can cover horizontal field; however, he can also perform a mighty torpedo move if the player presses down just like in NSMB Wii. This move can also be substitued with a Propeller Block from the same game. Origination: NSMB Wii

Option 2: Mushroom Trampoline- Toad creates a small mushroom that he can bounce off of as a recovery move. Think of those bouncy, pink mushrooms from the athletic levels of NSMB DS. Origination: NSMB DS/Unique move

Option 3: Power Squat Jump - Toad's chargeable jump from SMB2. Toad does this move by charging up while crouching, and then he will make a high jump afterwards. Origination: SMB2

Side B)-

Option 1: Toad Kart: - Toad will bring out his trustworth Standard Toad Kart from the Mario Kart games. He will then drive through the stage in it (like Wario's Bike). However, unlike the Bike, Toad's Kart makes smooth and quick turns. Additionally, it accelerates over time (Toad's trait in the Mario Kart games!). Additionally, Toad can throw items while he is in the kart. Origination: Mario Kart Series

Option 2: Toad Rush - Toad will pull out a Golden Mushroom (after charging) from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and then makes a dash attack. He will start performing these running dashes with golden after images appearing behind him (think of Fox's illusions from his side B in Melee). However, Toad's Side B collides into the foes so it provides great knockback. However, it is hard to control, so Toad players must be careful and practise with this move.

Down B)-

Option 1: Mushroom Block- Toad pulls out one of the Mushroom Blocks from SMB2 from the ground. This solid block provides a lot of knockback and damage if Toad throws one. However, only one of these blocks can be brought out on the stage at one. Characters can also stand on the block. Origination: Super Mario Bros. 2

Option 2: Bomb- Toad pulls out a bomb from SMB2 and Wario's Woods. These bombs are unlike Link's ones as these bombs are much larger. Toad can throw these bombs in an arch shaped throw, or he can kick it by pressing B. The bomb will explode once it hits a solid surface or an opponent.

Option 3: Pluck - Toad grabs onto his foes and puts them over his head like in SMB 2, Wario's Woods, and NSMB Wii. He can now walk and even run with them over his head. He can also throw them in a similar way to SMB 2. Opponents can struggle to get out of his grasp. Toad's pluck move can also be done in mid-air (making it the first mid-air grabbing move in Smash!), Origination: Super Mario Bros. 2, Wario's Woods, New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Option 4: Vegetable Pluck - Toad pulls out a vegetable from the ground. However, unlike Peach's one, Toad pulls out different vegetables which cause different effects and damage. Toad will also hold the vegetable over his head (like the original games) unlike Peach who holds her turnips in her hand. Toad may also be able to pull out the large turnips from Super Mario Advance. Origination: Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Advance

Final Smash Ideas (if FS does still exist):

*Option 1: Starshroom Attack: Toad calls in his fellow Toad friends (with a horn) who carry him up to their spaceship, the Starshroom from Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. At this point of time, the Toads in their spaceship proceed onwards with bombarding the stage and Toad's opponents with star bits (like in the Galaxy games). It is done in a shooter type sequence, and the star bits are shot quickly, but are very powerful upon contact. Origination: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2

*Option 2: Mushroom Conversion/Gorge - Toad uses his spore powers to cause the entire stage to convert into Mushroom based platforms like right from the Super Mario Bros. games. At this point, Toad can control the movement of the platforms and this can allow him to KO his opponents by playing this type of mind game. General Super Mario Bros. games/Unique move

*Option 3: Bomb Shower - The Fairy from Wario's Woods appears and converts the stage into the Tree Hollow from Wario's Woods. She now creates bombs which are transported to Toad to attack his opponents. Bombs are being created everywhere here, so it is a frantic time for Toad's opponents at this point of time (Toad is not affected by the bomb effects). Wario's Woods

*Option 4: Mega Toad - Toad consumes a Mega Mushroom from NSMB DS and turns gargauntuan in size (now he's not so little!). At this point of time, Toad is much larger than those taking a Super Mushroom effect and he can easily squish his opponents as he walks across the stage. He can only use physical moves, so do not try to jump off the staqe. However, his moves are now much more stronger than they used to be. New Super Mario Bros. DS, Mario Kart Wii

While I made this summary and this incarnation of Toad's moveset, a lot of it is inspired by Berserker01 of the Smash World Forums (Smash Boards). Sprites are also obtained from an alias there too. If you liked the moveset, give credit to the both of them as well. Also, here is the link that shows all of Toad's Smash created sprites (if interested):

Conclusion:
Well, I did my best to summarize my reasons and provide a Toad moveset to help people learn why he has a chance of making it in, and how he would fight. Toad is very underrated, but remember that he is not a generic NPC in every game. Look outside the box, and you will understand why so many of us support Toad for SSB4. I hope this thread helps you to understand all this. Anyways, if you have any questions feel free to post it here, or PM me. Also comments are appreciated on this thread, as work and time was done to make it! Anyways, Toad for SSB4!

Isn't there a Toad section in the SSB4 boards?

Just asking because it would probably do a lot better there. Also I hate SSB4 blogs, but that's just a personal thing.

Thank you for the comments and to be honest, I just wanted to post the old topic I made somewhere around here so I wouldn't forget about it (I haven't been on NSiders2 for a while, and I just wanted to archive this somewhere here for future purposes). I'll definitely consider posting it in the SSB4 character section soon; however, for now it will be here until I get the time to fix and set up a topic for it.

I agree. If any Mario character was to join the roster, it should be Toad...and not Waluigi lol.

Ganondork's side B is like a grab that can be done in mid-air. Move set sounds awesome though.

once again, this proves that nearly any character can be made into a Smash Bros. character even if it seems less likely. this moveset is great: it represents many games with Toad and is very creative. good job!
