Is this really a discussion? Tilts make up a good quarter or 5th of a character's toolbox... why -wouldnt- you use them?

Is there any character that could actually get away with and manage without using ANY tilts in any smash game on a competitive level? Even if there was I would imagine you would still want to consider learning tilts to increase your options.
Olimar.

Snake's side tilt and up tilt.

I think tilts, along with all other attacks, are totally useless and Smash should only be played to see who can SD the fastest.

The only comment i have completely agreed with.

**** all those melee, 64, and brawl elitists with their needlessly complicated "Smashes" and "specials". They're manipulating the game away from what it's meant to be played as, All items on big blue free for all super sudden death mega mushroom metal low gravity slow motion spicy curry 99 stock SD race!

I've personally never had much problems using tilts. My only problem is that some times I end up doing an incorrect move because I didn't put the stick in quite the right direction(though that applies to all moves, not just tilts).

Well, there are some people who apparently don't know that the A button exists, so....

I am not particularly Brawl savvy, but I thought Snake's utilt was pretty deadly.
Yes, his up-tilt is great. One of my favorites.

Anyways, in regards to the OP, it depends on the character I am using. For instance, if I am playing with Snake, the only tilt I ignore is d-tilt. However, some characters, namely Jigglypuff, don't necessarily have the best tilts. So I don't use tilts when playing as her, but I do use them when utilizing different characters.

I have difficulty in general as tilt inputs practically go against every fighting game input I've done in the last five years. The use of an analog input for attacks does not completely jive with me as in the heat of battle, I'm more inclined to use "hard" inputs that would give me Smash attacks instead of Tilts.

I would actually really like it if Smash attacks are moved to one of the jump buttons so analog inputs are not required for attacks. I mean, it wouldn't be THAT much different from the C-Stick.

I think Tilts, as an input, was done because of the N64 controller. That control stick was harder to move in comparison to later controllers from Nintendo. Also, there were only two action buttons at the time, the A and B so it was indeed efficient given the limited button options. That being said, I think that's something that's not really necessary, but it would be a fine option.
Man, that's an awesome idea. If Smash attacks were their own button. But would their be a new Neutral Smash attack? Think of the possibilities man.

You know, when I was little, me and my cousing used to play SD races with different rules as "mini-games".

I think one of the most fun mini-games was the following:

Rules:

You can only SD on the opposite side of the stage from which you spawned.
You win a point for every successful SD.
If you are touched by the opponent with any move before you SD, that stock does not grant you any points. (Projectiles that weren't Fox's laser count toward this rule, also the opponent could jump off the stage with you and SD, his whole goal is only to touch you before you die, even if that means dying with you right after).

Then we would do 10 stock matches with those rules. One match I would SD all 10, then we would play another match where he SD all 10.

There are people not using Tilts? Really? ._.

I use all attacks for all characters. ^^ And some tilts are far superior to some Smashes. Dedede's Up Tilt is Amazing. So is Snake's. Diddy's is also great. Hell, most Tilts are awesome.

"Never using tilts" is one of the classic tell-tale signs of a very weak player since weak players often fail to see the value in doing the more difficult input for a far more subtle move; I don't think we're going to really go anywhere but everyone talking about how not using tilts is just silly. I'd just say to the TC that whatever forums you are on in which the sentiment that not using tilts makes sense was common are probably not filled with many good players.

Also, even Olimar does have some real use for his tilts; none of them are core to his gameplay, but they do things that his other moves don't so there are situations in which they are the right options. Luigi or Jigglypuff would be easy to point out too, but it's the same story for them. The tilts may not really be what those characters are about, but the tilts are important for filling out their movesets and giving them go-to options in certain situations. More generally, pretty much every move in this game has some situation in which the move is the correct option, and it's just a bad sign of your ability as a player not to be ready to act when those unusual situations in which otherwise bad moves get a chance to shine come into play. I think most people on smashboards do understand that; perhaps if TC or others hang out with players who don't, they could spread the word and make the overall smash community very slightly a better place.

Of course he does. It's just a long going joke that Olimar's playstyle is point C-stick towards the opponent.

But still, of all the characters, he is the one who could get away with not having any tilts at all.

The easiest way I have of doing tilts, is out of another move. As Falco is my main in brawl, its real easy to approach with a SH Nair and before the animation is finished, I just press the direction of the tilt I want. It makes tilts a little easier when pressing the stick the direction you want before your previous animation ends.

I'm gonna try that next time my friend comes over.

Of course I use tilts. Why wouldn't you use tilts? Some tilts, like Luigi's up tilt and Snake's side and up tilts, can be really useful as they can KO opponents quickly and are executed quickly.

I use tilts and projectiles to help set up for smash attacks usually, so every match. When I use Ness especially, simply because his smashes leave him pretty wide open.
