Just curious how many of you use tilts in your matches?

this seems like the wrong forum to ask this question in to start, but i wanna know what forum has players that NEVER tilt.
I'm trying to remember what forum it was. It was a while ago I read it and thought it was weird myself.

I have no idea why anyone would voluntarily choose not to use options.

With few exceptions, the better players get, the less effective smash attacks become. You need to work for them. They require precursory weaker attacks, punishment, deception, or other setups like Specials or stage elements.

Tilts are generally faster and safer, while smash attacks take time to wind up or wind down, and as your opponent understands your character better, the more prepared they become for the behaviour of such attacks. Some characters like Sheik or Peach get more use of their down smash because they come out fast, so of course mileage may vary. For the most part, you will use more tilts than smash attacks.

A better example of a character breaking this rule is Olimar.

Every single one of his Smashes are fast. They are faster then his tilts even.

I only use smash attacks if my foe is at kill%

Also some smash attacks have more range than their counter parts, so that can be considered

I only started tilting habitually in Brawl honestly. I was pretty young for all other Smash Bros. which for me meant not knowing how to do much other than specials and Smash attacks.

I actually have difficulty using tilts in Smash. I keep doing Smashes by accident.

The only one I really have a hard time with is U-tilt (due to how I set up me controls, as I use tap jump. Though I might switch later)...

I have difficulty in general as tilt inputs practically go against every fighting game input I've done in the last five years. The use of an analog input for attacks does not completely jive with me as in the heat of battle, I'm more inclined to use "hard" inputs that would give me Smash attacks instead of Tilts.

I would actually really like it if Smash attacks are moved to one of the jump buttons so analog inputs are not required for attacks. I mean, it wouldn't be THAT much different from the C-Stick.

I think Tilts, as an input, was done because of the N64 controller. That control stick was harder to move in comparison to later controllers from Nintendo. Also, there were only two action buttons at the time, the A and B so it was indeed efficient given the limited button options. That being said, I think that's something that's not really necessary, but it would be a fine option.

Of course I tilt. If you guys have problems doing tilts you guys are being way too hard on the stick, just gently tilt it and press a.
Good for you. I use the d-pad (before people yell at me, I do it because there's a certain lag I feel when using a stick. Causing me to have problems attempting a smash attack).

In brawl you could use Control Stick + C-Stick for tilting. I found that to be rather pleasing as it allowed me to keep my thumb on the C-Stick almost 75% of the game (I mapped jump to a shoulder button so the only reason I had to move my finger were jabs, neutral airs and specials)

I use tilts all the time, but more as a Combo starter.

You actually intrigued me. With CC Pro or U Pro Controller (probably not CC1 because of its weird LZ/RZ location), one could assign everything but taunts (or in U Pro's case, taunts too, but this would be a bad idea) to sticks and non-thumb buttons. It would be even crazier if developers allowed us to reprogram the controls interpreter so that left stick is responsible for basic movements, and right stick for selection of attacks regardless of circumstances.

You could? You just use both sticks at the same time?

Yes, if you use the C-Stick in the direction that you are moving it wouldn't do a Smash, it would do a tilt. As such if you wanted to do a tilt in any direction you could just use both sticks at the same time.

I have just recently started tilting too, I dunno, just feels like a really unnatural motion that you need to get used to, it's a little too subtle for the frantic pace of Smash. Although some character's tilts are downright great, like Ike's.

And that's my problem. In most single player games, an gentler input like that may be fine, but the pace in Smash is in general too fast for most to adjust to it. It's real annoying as I know tilts are generally your oh so important pokes and safer attacks.

Depends. If it's my friends I'm playing with, then Marth Fsmashes for everyone! If not, then dtilt is usually the way to go. Due to how quick tilt moves come out in general (obviously not Ganon utilt tho), they're usually useful to hit/pressure the opponent away if they're too close but not within grab range.

With my experience, tilts aren't hard to pull off unless you aren't concise enough with your Smash input. The only real problem with them is that you sometimes accidentally input a Smash attack, crushing that opportunity to create space due to the longer animation.

I have tap jump on and i can still tilt fine, I'm guessing it's all the moonwalking i try to do. I used to have problems tilting vs smashing but it's something that solves itself if you play and use tilts often enough.

Agreed, Ike's tilts are great, particularly his upwards tilt. Snake's are amazing as well. He's probably the character where I use them the most...his side tilt is way more useful than his side smash.

I did that for Ike once, because going from a Jab Cancel to a tilt was/is hard for me lol, but it has one flaw. Every once in a while I used a tilt with the C-stick I would jump instead though.

Well, Snake's side smash is VERY hard to hit, but it's absolutely brutal when it does. And true, the hitbox and attack frames of Ike's Up Tilt are ridiculous.

I also play with tap jump off. C-stick on tilt still caused Ike to jump every once in a while instead of attacking. I doubt having jump located to a shoulder button would change that. :/

Is there any character that could actually get away with and manage without using ANY tilts in any smash game on a competitive level? Even if there was I would imagine you would still want to consider learning tilts to increase your options.
