Tips on SH Nair?

Hello! Hope I'm asking this in the right place...
I'm a Mewtwo main, and I've realized my play is lacking one of Mewtwo's best moves: his nair.
I find myself struggling to shorthop-nair, though.
I've tried tapping X and then flicking my thumb super quick to A, but I can't get it consistently and it hurts my thumb.
I also tried mapping my L-trigger to jump and using that to shorthop, but it goes too high.
Does anyone have any tips on how to shorthop-nair with Mewtwo?

Try using Z for nair, then you have a finger on X and a finger on Z.

You should be using attack stick anyways. If you're using a GameCube controller you can tilt the c-stick into an octagonal corner and a nair comes out without having to center the movement stick.

Z to jump would be a good idea too.

If you're on GC, I believe you can do a soft trigger press to always short hop (can't confirm). Personally, I use tap jump, but I don't know how consistently I can do it.
