How do you perform shine -> short hop nair in quick succession? When I do it fast enough, I end up full hopping but when I do it slow enough, I end up leaving myself vulnerable to an attack between the transition. What's the secret to pulling it off?

practice <_< make sure you can do short hops out of shine consistently first, same with shffl nairs

if you aren't using x or y to jump try that

Yeah just practice and use Y or X to jump. Y is more preferred. I use X personally. Falco is easy to get it down with a little practice. Fox on the other hand takes some mad practice.

Just fyi; shine --> sh nair is not safe by any means so don't expect to be invincible when you get it down. Remember to practice other pressure techniques aswell because mixing it up will help you alot

Also note that the hitlag when you actually hit a shield or something will make the timing a little different. People suggest practicing shield pressure with a handicapped bowser and 0.5 damage ratio. Also what Veetaak said is very true (believe me, when I shine > shffl nair > shine > shffl nair with my fox i'm not invincible). Other then that it's practice like everyone here says.
