I just recently stumbled upon P:M and have been watching videos and such on it, The way people pull of combos is ridiculous, and I can't even do it my self, can someone give me pointers or tips, for playing P:M effectively?

Advanced techniques are a good place to start. L-cancels are often essential to doing combos. Knowing where the moves send people and at what percentages combos connect is also important. Both of those are dependant on DI but if you can read and react, combo's come naturally.

Honestly, the best advice anyone can give is just play the game with other people. Learn up on the various AT as slowly start integrating them into your play. Give it time. A lot of us have been playing Melee since the day it came out. You can't play a game for a few hours and expect to be the best of the best.

I appreciate all of the responses, I'm starting to pick up combos with Mario and Wario, they are both pretty fun to play, as is Link.

Learn to SHFFL first. People always bring up wavedashing like it's the most important AT, but SHFFLing (and really L canceling in general) are far more integral for the vast majority of the cast.

Don't worry too much about wavedashing at first. Doing it is the easy part, learning when and where to use it is the hard one.

Honestly, just find the character you love the most and go to training mode. Practice controlling them and don't worry about SDs. once you like the feel of the character I would delve into SHFFLs and Wavedashes Etc.

Play around with grabs. In early play, they are quite powerful. And then to follow up that (because it is easy to figure this out using throws), take some time to learn about directional influence. It isn't too big of a deal at first, but DI has a huge effect on what you can do to your opponent when performing combos and throws, and what they can do to you in those situations. Aside from that, everyone else has said what needs to be said, in my opinion.
