Timing for L-cancel seems weird. Do I have input lag?

I play Project M on an HD TV through a Denon receiver that takes composite cable input and outputs to HDMI. I suspect that this setup is creating some input lag, but I am not experienced enough to really know for sure.

I find that the timing for the L-cancel on a SHFFL'd Nair with Fox involves hitting L when Fox has fallen about halfway down from the peak of his jump. Hitting L when or just before he hits the ground is clearly too late.

Is this a result of input lag?

Yea that's why they use projectors and TV tubes for tournaments. Although when I play on my HDTV it has a setting where it sacrifices quality but removes frame lag. My HDTV is slightly new so you should try fiddling around with the settings, or get a CRT TV. I have one that ill give you for free, you can come get it if you live in California.

K, I'm going to mess around with the "Game Mode" setting on the TV.

What is the proper timing for an L-cancel? Right before he hits the ground?

Yes but it changes depending on the situation. Say if you hit the opponent or their shield. If you fastfall or not. I suggest practicing all those timings. Even with gamemode CRT is better. If you can get access to one I strongly suggest it.

Hmm. I wish there was a good way to test input lag.

I can L-cancel no problem, it just seems like I have to press L a little early, but I could be wrong.

I wonder if getting component cables will solve the problem.

Man, since HDTV's are so prevalent now I wouldn't be surprised if some smaller tournies have input lag on their TVs.

I play on am HDTV with component cables at home, that won't fix the issue at all.
As for tourneys, people usually bring their own setup (including CRT TV's), so I don't really ever see Smash being played on HDTV at tourneys unless they fix the lag issue.
