On a side note, does anybody else nickname their pokemon? My Treecko is named Sawamura. He's a shiny and he's awesome and special and I love him. I'm going to use him as my starter for ORAS.
*clears throat*
Sorry, when I start talking about pokemon I revert to my 8 year old self again.
...this ended up being longer than I thought it would be...
I'll nickname my Pokemon unless I
really like the Pokemon and their default name.
I didn't nickname my Mawile or Cradily, for example.
Other than that, I just like to make myself laugh with little quirks.
For example, when I played through Crystal Version a few months before HGSS released, I used an Ariados just because.
I named the Ariados "Ninja."
When I played through Soul Silver, I used a Crobat and named it "Ninja #2."
I will forever continue this trend. My collection of ninjas include...
Scolipede - Ninja #3
Muk - Ninja #4
Ninjask - Ninja #5
Shedinja - Ninja #5.5
Seviper - Nninja (The double consonant being a reference to an inside joke. And "#" is not an available character in Gen3)
Picking the new Ninja has become the hardest choice in my playthroughs. I've made it a rule for myself that they must either be bug or poison-types in memory of the original Ninja.
On top of this, I've also made a theme of including a nickname reference to Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged.
In the same Soul Silver playthrough with Ninja #2, I named my Feraligatr "Florence" and my Magmortar "Melvin."
In my White playthrough I named my Cofagrigus "Zorc."
In my Japanese White 2 playthrough I named my Golurk "Shadi."
In my Black 2 playthrough I named my Electivire "Malik." (His full name is unofficially "Malik Blishtar. No relation to Marik Ishtar.")
And in my Y playthrough I named my Dragalge "Hobson."
REFERENCE JOKES ARE HILARIOUS
I hope at least one of you here watches Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged...
Another funny one I did was for my playthrough of my Japanese copy of Black. Since I was limited in character count for nicknames, I went with a theme that would allow for short nicknames: Morshu quotes.
Morshu being the fat shopkeeper from the terrible Zelda CDi cutscenes...
"Lamp oil, rope, bombs, you want it? It's yours, my friend, as long as you have enough rupees."
"Sorry, Link, I can't give credit. Come back when you're a little... mmm... richer!"
So...
Emboar - MRSHU
Galvantula - MMM
Seismitoad - BOMBS
Sigilyph - ROPE
Hydreigon - RICHR
Metagross - LAMP
I also caught Tornadus, named it "RUPEE" and used it in my playthrough with Zorc and Ninja #3.
Other amusing nicknames I've done...
My Braviary named DavidBowie. (Which is actually meant to be more of a reference to the "Naruto Comedy Fandub Spoof Series Show" than it is to the actual singer.)
On one team I had my Samurott named "Craig" and Druddigon named "Eric," which is a reference to
Drake and Josh.
Staraptor named "Toast." (I don't even know.)
Regirock named "RRREGIROCK." (Reference to
this.)
A Garchomp named "Garchomp." You may be thinking "wat?" Well, in every game before Gen5, Pokemon names would be in all caps. I didn't want that for my Garchomp for some reason, so I had to "nickname" it "Garchomp." So, while "Garchomp" was a Gible and a Gabite, his name was "Garchomp."
