The problem with dtilt is that it is not a guaranteed trip. That makes it a lot more difficult to justify using, because if it doesn't trip you can get punished for it.

However I think that maybe there is some potential for this move in the future.

I sometimes use it to poke and see if my opponent reacts by blocking or dodging, or doing neither. I then follow up with a grab. It doesn't trip often, though. I kind of wish it did.

Really? I thought it was a guaranteed trip on the first hit (whereas succeeding Dtilts only damage, so as not to chain stun.)

I think dtilt can be used when you're not sure if you have the time to land a grab. It's a little faster than a grab, and recovers MUCH quicker, so it's relatively lower risk. Just use 1 then try for the grab.

Technically it can be punished if it doesn't trip or even hit at all, but your opponent will have to react fast, and the punish can't be too bad.

Dtilt can trip consistently, but you have to have really exact spacing for it (somewhere just before the tip of Ness's foot in my experience) to trip, so often it won't happen at all, or will just happen from spamming dtilt and the knockback spacing them right. I have (once) done it 3 times in a row by edging forward slightly and keeping them locked. TL;DR, it's too difficult to space right, so it's not that useful, but can be useful to bear in mind.

I saw in this 3DS 1.0.4 frame data dump that it has a 30% chance of tripping for each hit, any hitbox iirc
