Through-Platform Aerial: The SoCal

There's a technique that some players use, where you can fall through (not drop from) a platform and, before you hit the ground, perform an aerial. It's very situational, typically dealing with the options the players have with a certain platform and the mindgames that emerge from those options.

And the only two players I can remember who use this, are players with really good platform games from Socal:
Mango and S2J.

Example 1: Mango vs Hungrybox @ Zenith 2013 - (Extras - #2 - #3) + @ EVO
A simple fall through the platform with a Fox bair, and Hbox lifts his shield right as the move hits.

Example 2: S2J vs SFAT @ NCR (Winners)
Some close quarters fighting, and S2J using a fall-through up-air to gain a slight edge (not as good of an example on the usefulness of the technique)

Obviously, not every character will be able to do this with all of their aerials - since it's dependent on fall-speed (normal or fast), how quick the aerial comes out, and the height of the platform from the ground (doing this between the top platform and ground on Dreamland is very easy).

I don't know all the data to do anything with this in general, but everyone can try their quickest aerials to see if they work.
Fox has bair and (hypothetically) nair [maybe Mango has used this too]. And Falcon has up-air.

Don't know if this has been observed or stated before, but thought I'd share.
If this isn't new, please refer me to the/a proper location. Thank you.

My smash awareness and mindpower is not that great, would you care to explain? lol
Well generally when you are below someone you have the advantage in positions because not many attacks are that good from the top. So, when you jump but fall through the platform, it may make your opponent think you are going on the platform but then you fall through so immediately it would be him in a bad position on the platform or at least slightly above you. I think this is also combined with the fact that you can waveland in place on the platform and then fall through with an aerial, in that case it would be a change of timing which may throw off your opponent again.

This all starts with because jumping in itself is a commitment so basically the one that jumps first could be in a bad spot already. =P

Like when someone is on the platform, you want to jump at him and hit him off right? So if you have jumped first to try to hit him while hes already there, then he can totally either take the hit on shield and shield drop or just jump right over the move that was thrown and hit you out of it so he can regain the center or gimp/kill you.

Ahh, okay. I see what you mean. Thank you.

I suppose, too, by jumping and, theoretically, putting yourself in that worse position can soften your opponent's defenses, allowing for a situation similar to when Hbox lifts his sheild.
I mean, regardless, you're putting your self in a worse position - if you are in fact starting from below the platform - so there's risk-reward judgement going on (and the mindgames, obviously).

Ya I guess, I think Hbox could've been a little scared in that moment since Mango was already ready to attack before Hbox landed but he chose to circle around him instead while Hbox was shielding for the attack that didnt come before the bair. (That was a shield-stab) Fox is fast enough for these kinds of mixups.

If it's any consolation, I watched it like three times after you mentioned it being a shield-stab and found myself agreeing with you. But then I did the quick play-pause technique. lol

Thanks for responding, Kage.

This doesn't deserve a name. It's just a simple concept that holding your fastfall, without doing s move, makes you fall through platforms. I guess I didn't realize that people don't do this a lot....

Every marth/falcon player does this in their sleep. Imagine being on the top platform of battlefield, running off, and falling to ground level and just popping out a fair/uair right before you land. Pretty standard s**t. It's just harder with spacies because they fall faster. (I feel like everyone has felt the frustration of trying to do this but messing up the timing and just landing on the platform and missing an l cancel)

This is like basic mandatory **** for Falco, honestly. I'm constantly coming down with bairs through plats to hit people. I'm sure plenty of people are completely ignorant to it though, so it can't hurt to post it.

Just dont forget to take into account where the opponent is, he can uair you out of it even if you decide to land on the platform or go through. Or he can space where he can grab your landing lag.
