So there's going to be a tournament in the Philadelphia area in a couple weeks and I'm thinking about joining. I'm new to the whole tourney scene and I'm a pretty shy person so I wanted to know what advice people can give me about going to tournaments.

It's seems to be a big tournament and I'm just a little nervous about jumping into something like that from the start.

Quick backstory: I learned the more competitive fundamentals of smash during the Brawl era and been playing smash 4 since release. I'm just your regular For Glory warrior with 80% win rate lol. But I definitely want to broaden my horizons in my experience with smash. Don't really care about winning, just want to have a positive experience, learn new things and meet new people.

Relax and enjoy yourself, although it can be high pressure playing in tournaments you will get used to it over time but what I think is overlooked by most newcomers is the community, chill out and enjoy yourself. Meet the people there, get friendlies in etc. That way you can make new Smash friends/rivals and normally you can find someone with a bit more experience who can help give you a low down.

There isn't really an easy way to ease yourself into tournaments but if you just dive in you can really make the most out of it!

Something I do see a lot of players doing is once they lose, they leave. If you can, try and avoid this, you miss all of the hype action that is happening at the tournament and you also miss the opportunity to really socialise and play with others around.

General tournament stuff you need to remember, be respectful to everyone, make sure you don't make a mess/clean up after yourself. And a really important one is make sure you report your scores to the TO's otherwise it can cause major delays.

Otherwise, dive in, play your sets, get some friendlies and meet as many players as you can! Oh and most of all, enjoy yourself!

Thanks for the advice. I guess there's really no way to get rid of the nervousness of doing a tournament for the first time. It's natural. But yeah, I definitely want to stay as long as I can to learn as much as possible.
