Think About It: Could Air-Grabbing Work?

After thinking about it, do you think Air-Grabbing could work in Smash?

As I was sitting on the bus on my way home from school today, a thought hit me: What if you could grab mid-air? Think about it - for example, if you were Mario, you could knock your opponent off-stage, jump backwards behind him, grab him mid-air, and back throw him futher off the arena. Of course, this would kind of ruin the unique features of characters like Wario being able to (kinda) grab in the air. But imagine, if you could grab in the air, but if you missed, it would be very punishable, by giving you a lot of animation recovery, as well as a lot of landing lag if you land before the animation is complete.

(This just made me thought - You know Wario's down throw? Where be puts you beneath him and stomps you with his butt? Well, if this were to be used mid-air, it would be a Ground Pound! Mind blown!)

I've never thought about this, but I now think it could be pretty interesting to have. Of course, I might be completely off track here, since it might be very OP and game changing, only that I don't realize it.

What do you think of this?

i think it could work, but maybe only if it was fthrow and bthrow? off stage dthrows would basically be a spike for every character, lol

I think down throws could work in the air too, just don't make them spike most characters until they're at a higher percent. If a character is at like 50% and you catch em with a down throw offstage, they could get out of the animation quickly enough to make it back in a lot of instances. I have no doubt that air throws could work as a general mechanic, it would actually be kinda cool. They could make it so you could grab someone out of air dodging just like you can grab someone while theyre shielding....it would make for a full rock/paper/scissors game in the air too, lol.

All of my yes. Air Throws and Air Smashes are two things I really want to happen.

So far, we've only got one character that has Air Smashes and some characters have Special grabs in the air. I wanna see some more progress made.

I think it stay to characters who can eat things and Yoshi. (I want yoshi to be able to eat small items in smash 5 though.) Like King DeDeDe, Kirby and Wario. This might make the metagame super boring and predictable too.

Air grabbing isn't as radical as it sounds. As has been said, it would be serve mostly to give everyone a spike. Grabs are either short-ranged or laggy, and are good partly because they are THE anti-shield option... but since you can't shield in midair, why not use once of your aerials instead? If they use an aerial you will lose the trade.

Some characters like Bowser have aerial grabs, but it's less for aerial combat and more for an unshieldable aerial approach. So I suppose sitting in shield would become a much weaker option overall ( which some people might like).

The problem I can see with this is if a character leads by a stock and grabs, the opponent could possibly be gimped due to how long the grab animation would last. Unless it was an instant grab -> throw combo, this probably wouldn't work too well.

However, if it was more instant we would have a new way of juggling which would be pretty cool.

I actually hoped this was what Smash 4 was gonna do, being that Melee had sideB and Brawl had Final Smashes.
Why not add something cool to the game rather than take a bunch of stuff away?

They are, I just kinda wish they were all as interesting as Palutena's.
It seems a little lopsided to give her all this special attention but just noodle around with everyone else's properties and call it a day, and then not allow custom moves (or at least standardized Miis) on For Glory.

I'd like to see air grabs. Though characters with tethers might abuse the mechanic a bit.

I like the idea of an air grab and would welcome it with open arms. I've always thought Smash could use another throw type and even an third button for attacks since so many characters have so many moves and attacks from their past games.

I agree that I think custom moves should be allowed online with everyone. This is the big special move enhancement--why is it so restricted?

Lying about my country.
If it was different than grounded grabs, maybe.

Like, they have terrible range and automatically do fthrow. It'd just be kinda super broken otherwise.
