Reminds me of a story I read about a man held in Iraq for 4 years by the Americans. When he was released, he felt no anger, just relief. At the time, I tried to wrap my head around that. But I guess now it makes sense. 4 years in prison is lucky compared to what could have happened.

Sometimes I think the U.S. doesn't understand the concept of nation-building. Maybe nobody does. Or maybe, this is how it's always been done.

Ah, that makes sense. I generally thought of the mustard gas just being rocketed in, but looking it up they did use planes and helicopters too. When you said "planes and mustard gas" I just naturally assumed you used the word "and" to imply two separate occasions.

Well, you're right... sort of. For the Kurds/oppressed groups, Iraq is probably much better now than it was before.

But for the vast majority of the country, things have gotten infinitely worse. Under Saddam, the country had working electricity, telephones, schools, and believe it or not, great medical care. Iraqi hospitals were on par with those of many developed European countries, like France. Not anymore.

Saddam may have been an evil person who did some terrible things, but Iraq as a whole was a good place with fully functioning infrastructure.
