Theory: Dash-Canceling with Crawling characters?

Bowser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOEo0A7zVMU (Watch at 1:35)

Zelda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2p-EyKKiAo (Beginning of the video)

In the first video, we see that Bowser can (apparently) cancel his dash by crouching, while Zelda cannot. This allows Bowser to almost immediately use his Dtilt, while Zelda's has a bit of delay to it. In the Zelda video, one person questioned "Why can Bowser do it?". This led me to speculate the possibilities of why Bowser could apparently cancel his dash using crouch, and why Zelda couldn't. And I came up with a theory as to why this is.

The difference between the two characters is that Bowser can crawl. Back when I played the Demo at Smash Fest, I tried canceling a dash by crouching when I was using Villager. And, to my disappointment, I couldn't. I have no footage of me doing this, so you just have to take my word for it. And Villager, like Zelda, doesn't have access to a crawl. Could this be the key as to why Bowser was supposedly able to cancel his dash to go straight into a Dtilt? If that is the case, we may see an advanced technique from Melee make a return in Smash 4...although, it would become character-specific in this game.

What are your thoughts on this? I am probably going to try to look for more footage of this on youtube, although this will probably be a difficult endeavor, as I doubt that most people would try to immediately use a Dtilt out of a dash. If anyone finds any information though, please post it. Because the more movement options that are in Smash 4, the better.

Also, here is a list of characters who have access to a crawl: http://www.ssbwiki.com/Crawling

Brawl:
Bowser
Diddy Kong
Ivysaur
Lucario
Luigi
Pikachu
Sheik
Snake
Squirtle
Wario
Yoshi
Zero Suit Samus

Smash 4:
Luigi
Pikachu
Wii Fit Trainer
Rosalina
Greninja
Sheik

Sheik can crawl =3

Very interesting speculation, I wonder if this will be in the final game.

Edit: Although now that I really think about it I never abuse this mechanic in melee. I did know about it but I just never fully added it to my play so I don't know the full scope of how useful this would be.

I think that Sheik is going to be a top-tier character in this game, so that song is rather fitting. lol

ZSS will probably be nerfed, due to the fact that she won the Smash Invitational Tournament (and how Sakurai was there). But Sheik may remain unchanged. And if she has access to this (unconfirmed) option, then there's no way she will be anything lower than at least high-tier, in my opinion.

If this technique is true, I really hope that it slips by and is in the final product of the game. We may not have L-Canceling or Wavedashing, but we have Pivot Tilting/Smashing. And if all things go well, canceling a dash with crawling characters.

Im pretty sure this was in brawl. You were able to do a few tricks involving crouching/crawling.

I thought this at first. Honestly, I think it's more to do with how quickly a character stops dashing (which in Smash 4 at least, Bowser and Marth seem to stop on a dime, unlike Zelda who slides forward a bit before crouching). So it's likely that Bowser just stops dashing, then goes into a crouch, as opposed to the crouch actually interrupting the dash and making it end. This would also explain why we have pivot attacks/smashes the way they are, as you mentioned your second post.

And yeah, Sheik is OP lol.

I'm hyper bias so I naturally want to agree with you but we still don't know how well she be able to kill. Having them buffing her already great combo potential below 100% and improving her mobility isn't going to help her that much when she need to kill someone at 130-150% more then half the time, especially if her opponent can constantly kill you around 90%. There's also new tech that could come out that can help balance things, character specific tricks that could hurt Sheik (something akin to grab releases on Lucas), and just match ups in general (ice climbers).... Personally though once I figure out just how well she can kill, how gimpable recoveries are with her and just the general feel for the character then I'll most likely start screaming about Sheik being high tier.

Dash canceling with only specific characters is a disaster waiting to happen.

If dash canceling comes back, that'll be excellent.
DK's (and many other characters') best options from dash (in my experience) involve tilts or jabs rather than aerials, so I'm all for it; this is one minor thing that could really make the game amazing and I really hope it's included (or the IASA frames from dash are shortened).
