1- What do the blue, red, yellow and green borders on the characters mean?

I have custom character icons for characters that already have icons (Snake, Ice Climbers etc.) But also some that do not (Lana, Spyro etc.) and I beleive that you add these in with the rest of the icons in seperate ways. Not sure...
If somebody could make a easy tutorial on how to add the icons in that would be great.
