It's so strange that stages from different time periods appear in the level dedicated to that time period. Why is it tied to the characters fighting? There are so many common anachronisms, like Reset Bomb Forest in 1986-1990 even though it's a level from a 2012 game. This All-Star mode is a big improvement on the last one, no doubt, the system now where character appear based on their time period regardless of the series inception is great, much better than Ness and Lucas representing a game neither of them appeared in, for example, but it's annoying to see the stage selection isn't so careful. The only real downside to this is that the last level has by far the most stages (but this isn't much of a problem really)

It should work like this, rather than being tied to the characters fighting:

Level 1 (1980-84):
-Flat Zone 2 (Game and Watch Series - 1980)
-Pac-Maze (Pac-Man - 1980)
-Boxing Ring (Punch-Out!! - 1984)

Level 2 (1984-1986):
-Balloon Fight (Balloon Fight - 1985)
-Mushroomy Kingdom (Super Mario Bros - 1985)
-Brinstar (Metroid - 1986)

Level 3 (1986-1990):
-Wily Castle (Mega Man 2 - 1988)
-Magicant (Mother - 1989)
-Mute City (F-Zero - 1990)

Level 4 (1990-1993):
-Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog - 1991)
-Dream Land (Kirby's Dream Land - 1992)
-Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart - 1992)
-Corneria (Star Fox - 1993)

Level 5 (1993-2001):
-Jungle Japes (Donkey Kong Country - 1994)
-Yoshi's Island (Yoshi's Island - 1995)
-Gerudo Valley (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 1997)
-Paper Mario (Paper Mario - 2000)

Level 6 (2001-2006):
-Distant Planet (Pikmin - GCN - 2001)
-Wario Ware Inc. (Wario Ware - GBA - 2003)
-Pictochat 2 (Pictochat - DS - 2004)
-Living Room (Nintendogs - DS - 2005)

Level 7 (2007-2013):
-Spirit Train (Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - 2009)
-Gaur Plain (Xenoblade Chronicles - 2010)
-Unova Pokemon League (Pokemon Black and White - 2010)
-3D Land (Super Mario 3D Land - 2011)
-Streetpass Quest (Streetpass Mii Plaza - 2011)
-Reset Bomb Forest (Kid Icarus Uprising - 2012)
-Tortimer Island (Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 2012)
-Golden Plains (New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 2012)
-Arena Ferox (Fire Emblem Awakening - 2012)
-Prism Tower (Pokemon X and Y - 2013)
