Anyone else out there a fan of horror games? I'm setting up this thread for my fellow fans of horror games to discuss the wonderful, horrible, horror genre from classics to whatever game has everyone with a webcam and a youtube account by the balls this year.

So, anyone else planning on picking up Alien Isolation and/or The Evil WIthin?

I'm thinking about The Evil Within, but not right away. Shinji Mikami working on it definitely has my interest.

I'll be honest that I haven't played many horror games aside from the RE series when it wasmore survival horror based. I really want to give Fatal Frame and the Silent Hills series a try. The latter, I'm just waiting to come across the better/original version.

The Fatal Frame series has been on my to-play list for a long time. The fact that they often command obscene prices is what kept me away from the series. Although a number of them can be downloaded now, so I might pick one up in the future.

My only experience with Silent Hill is playing up to the hotel (about two hours in) of the second game before the disk crapped out on me and getting equally as far in the first game but giving up because the first game is really kind of boring.

I'm probably beating a dead horse at this point by now, but "Five Nights at Freddy's" always scares the hell out of me. I've played the game so many times, I know how the game works, I know how to go about playing the game, but regardless, when one of the animatronics get you, it never fails to scare me. Yeah, by now, everyone knows of the game, and the fact that it relies on jump scares, but it's still good at what it does, and I'm hyped for the sequel.

On another note, the Oculus Rift looks like a really cool piece of hardware, and for those who have heard of the YouTuber, Markiplier, the horror games he play have the potential to really scare the s*** out of you, especially with the depth one must experience with the thing over their eyes.

I was already interested in the atmosphere and feel of the demo. Then seeing Norman Reedus in the game was a cherry on top for me, especially since I'm a Reedus fangirl.

I've always wanted to try Fatal Frame, but I am an absolute coward, triply so when it comes to jump scares. To be honest, I like my spooky games more along the lines of the unsettling kind of scary as opposed to jump scares'n all that. Basically, put me in a situation and environment that is surreal and just *wrong* and I'm hooked.

Probably goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: Amnesia would be your kind of game, if you haven't already played it.

Single player Garry's Mod creeps me out. Being given a big map with no music and being alone in it make me think some random horror from the dreams of Chthulu is going to pop up on me.

Also, I'll parrot a post above mine and say Five Nights at Freddy's.

The Clock Tower series has always been one of my favorite horror games to watch.

Most people have never heard of it, and that's mainly because the original was a Japanese only game released for the Super Famicom (it was later ported to the PSX though). There were some sequels, and while they were ok, the original will always be the best.

The main premise of the game is that you and your friends have just been adopted, but there's a creepy small creature with scissors that wanders the mansion to kill you. What makes Clock Tower so great is its 16-bit cinematics (which are surprisingly pretty scary), and that it uses jump scares and suspense to scare the player (ex: when running from the scissor man, you have to find a good hiding spot to get rid of him, and you can trip sometimes).

CREEPY SCREENSHOTS

EDIT: The site where I got most of the pictures won't make the pictures show up for some reason, so instead I posted a sprite sheet of the cinematics.

Also video montage

I have passing familiarity but those prices kept me far from the series.

Isn't that the game where you have a dog NPC ally?

Also, has anyone else played this?

Horribly overrated and over hyped but as a Lovecraft fan the first half of the game (before it goes full-on FPS and you're just blasting away at everything with Yithian tech) is fantastic. I love how they managed to mix The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Shadow Out of Time so well. Unfortunately, if you've read either one of those stories then the game's narrative holds few surprises for you.

Yeah. The dog also shows up in RE4, trapped in a bear trap. I forgot the name, but I think it was named after one of Donald's nephews.

Hewie! The maid in that game is awesome.

I do love me some horror games, especially around this time of year. I should probably also finish Fatal Frame 2, but I just haven't got around to it yet. I remember getting to a temple and there was a bunch of priest dudes that kept messing me up, haha.

Double post because a friend of mine and I played Five Nights at Freddy's, or we tried to anyway. I don't think we ever made it past the second night. It's a cool little game, but I don't feel compelled to ever try to finish it or play any more of it, if that makes sense.

I want something spooky to play, but I might just wait for The Evil Within at this point... hmm.

There's also Alien Isolation to consider. I'm waiting for Evil Within to come out before I decide which one I'm gonna buy.
Oh, I forgot about that, true. It sort of wasn't even really on my radar at all, haha. I'm not a huge Alien fan, but the game does look pretty fun. I'll have to keep an eye on it. I do enjoy the movies, but I've never played one of the games.

If you're looking for a horror game that's different and also free you should look for a game called OFF. It's a surrealistic horror RPG with a unique story and a great atmospheric soundtrack. The combat isn't actually very good and the game is short but it's worth playing for the aesthetic and story alone. There's also a fair amount of hidden content if you backtrack to previous areas.

Alien Isolation is my pick for best horror game of the year so far; it completely nailed the tone of Alien and managed to make a 35 year old monster terrifying.

Evil Within is also good, but as a RE4 fan I can't see it as anything but a modernized version of that. It goes way too far into the action-spectrum near the end, but until then it's pretty spooky. I love that the devs had the stones to throw you up against so many one hit kill situations, whether it's with an enemy or trap.

I want to play Evil Within so bad, but I bought it for my bf for his birthday. I'll have to wait until after he plays it, I guess.

I'm a bit on the fence about Alien Isolation, but it looks really cool. I think I may wait a bit for a price drop before I pick it up. It does appeal to me more in a gameplay perspective, so I guess we'll see.

I've actually been kinda disappointed with Alien Isolation. Don't get me wrong, recreating the feel one of one of my favorite movies of all time is awesome and I love how the motion tracker was implemented but aside from that it's mostly just been a pretty standard post-Amnesia survival horror game.

Plus the game's one major selling point, the xenomorph, is hardly present. So far my only encounter with it has been in a single scripted event. I think it was stalking me at one point because my motion tracker was freaking the **** out for no reason but I just carried on moving to my objective and wasn't attacked once. Then again, I'm only about three hours into the game so that might change. I'm going new hours in november that will give me more time to play games so hopefully I'll be able to finish it then.

Right now I'm kinda wishing I had picked up Evil Within over it, but we'll see.

If anyone has played TOMODACHI life, those dream sequences can actually be kinda creepy. Another good one is slender. I don't actually like the games themselves, (too many, too boring, and slender isn't really scary), I love watching people's reactions. Same with FNAF

I can understand why you like them, but I don't enjoy watching most horror LPs. Too many over-the-top reactions gets old really fast.

The biggest factors for seeing the Alien is how much noise you make and how long you stay in an area. From the moment Axel dies, the Alien can be alerted if you so much as walk for more than five seconds or stay in a room for a pretty generous amount of time at first. (I've tested this) The motion tracker freaking out is just the game telling you that it's in the vents. As the game goes on it'll appear more and more, plus certain situations practically force it to appear anyway.

And in my opinion, it's miles ahead of Amnesia for the simple fact that you're not playing as the biggest wuss in a horror game: a man who can't even pick up a stick to swing at a monster. People say weapons kill the scariness, but I think Isolation implements weapons well. Combat is possible, but most definitely a last resort. That and I don't have to deal with Ripley gnashing her teeth or fainting when she needs to hide in the darkness from things far scarier than those muppets or whatever.

I'm sure everyone is aware, but Five Nights at Freddy's 2 came out on steam a few days ago. Chances are you're already familiar with the game given that everyone with a webcam and youtube account has played it.

So has anyone actually played it yet? I still haven't played the first one.

Its eight dollars on steam. Even though the first game is only five I still haven't picked it up because I feel like its a one-trick pony. After seeing so many LPs of it I can't help but feel like there's not a whole lot I could get out of the game by actually playing it myself.
