Whats up guys, I thought it would be nice to get some discussion going about side events for Brawl. I'd like to hear ideas, reactions and success/failure stories about interesting side events at Brawl tournaments.

I'd like to discuss the rules associated with each side event if special ones apply.

I'll start with a list of all the ones I know of.

Tier Restricted Events - this includes all you low tier/mid tier/top3banned stuff, 1 simple rule about which characters can and cant be used. Probably the most successful type of side event.

AllBrawl - Random FFA side events

Liberal Stagelist Events - These are alot rarer lately, but its generally just competition focused on the less accepted stages.

Duelist - Gametype where everyone picks Snake and blows themselves up a variety of custom stages, items like mushrooms, Mr Saturns, bombs and even starmen can be thrown in to make gameplay more hazardous.

Team Attack Off Doubles - I've seen this run in Japan before, easily implemented change that turns doubles on its side. Team combos run wild, no offstage saves or healing/bucket strategies.

YOLO - One Stock matches. Don't SD.

Brawlmods. P:M, BB, B+, B-, etc, I guess that counts as "side" events.

Item Ruleset didn't get much use, which is a shame because Kieser invested a lot of effort on it (as well as some of the mods that got ignored).

Nice thread idea btw

Yeah, I was going to say ISP, definitely. A lot of people didn't know that I had never intended for ISP to be anything OTHER than a side event (for Brawl, that is; all bets are off for SSB4 ^_- ), so I think a lot of people were turned away just from the concept. When it was actually USED, though, it got rave reviews; I'll never forget the look on M2K and Inui's faces on the Sunday of WHOBO 1 when we told them 1v1 ISP was cancelled because of Easter (IIRC). They legitimately enjoyed the 2v2 bracket and were looking forward to 1v1.

ISP definitely is something to include on your list.

Some people can't understand how alternate rulesets are meant to be Side events. Standard WON'T change (specially as SSB4 is about to come out).

I guess it's because some people don't get how you can put effort into something and not intend it to take center stage. I don't know how many people came into the ISP threads over the years complaining and telling me that the colossal amount of effort I was putting into it was a waste because there was 0% chance of it replacing standard Brawl rulesets... as if any effort is worthless unless it is The One True Ruleset. I never got that, because my mentality was that if even a few people got enjoyment out of it, it was worth it (and lots more than just a few people used ISP, so, there you go).

I see the same thing in BBrawl and P:M threads sometimes. "You know, these are hacks. No one will use them in official tournaments. This is a waste of time." It's not like, I don't know, they weren't ever intended to be that way or anything. -_-
