Hard to believe that an entire year has passed since SSB4 was officially announced, isn’t it? It doesn’t even feel like that long ago when Sakurai made his statement on Twitter that SSB4 would definitely be shown at E3 2013 and I made the decision to come back to Smashboards after a 2 ½ year hiatus. Since then, I’ve regained the modship that I had in the early Brawl days that I got shortly after the speculation days were over with. It just goes to show that a lot can happen in a year, especially in a year of Smash speculation.

I feel that the waiting game has become a major part of being a Smash fan. For Brawl, we had the game pseudo announced at E3 2005 then officially announced at E3 2006 only for it to not be released until early 2008. For this game, it was pseudo announced at E3 2011 but it wouldn’t be officially announced until E3 2013, with the 3DS version coming out later this summer and the Wii U version sometime near the end of the year. That leaves a lot of time for us fans to speculate but, thankfully, Sakurai is accommodating in that regard. Unlike a vast majority of gaming fanbases, we actually get daily updates ranging from the celebration worthy to groan worthy. For most of us, this time of the day becomes the sacred “Japan Time.” In the Western Hemisphere, this means staying up ungodly late to hopefully catch something worthwhile. Whether it’s something good or bad, we’re usually back again on a different night, risking being barely functional the next morning for school or work because it is quite a different experience when you catch the update live. There’s the buildup and the wild speculation that all leads up to crushing disappointment or wild, fanboyish fanfare. It’s all part of the ride that we Smash fans willingly put ourselves on when a new Smash game is announced.

I remember the Brawl days. Brawl was announced at a private showing hours after the initial Nintendo presentation at E3 06 and I only found out about it the next day because of how late it was shown. There was a lot of excitement but the reveal process was agonizing. The first 5 weeks after E3 we got little tidbits about Metaknight, Wario, Snake, Pit, and ZSS before Sakurai went back into hiding. What followed was about six months of mindless speculation before Nintendo World 06 where we saw… a handful of stages and Fox. Yet another six months passed and that was when a staple of Smash culture was born: the daily updates. For the next eight months, they largely dictated the eb and flow of Smash culture and, five years later, it would come back in a big way with the announcement of the New Smash Bros at E3 2013.

I’m sure a lot of you made some decent memories this past year thanks to the daily updates and Nintendo Directs and I want to hear about them. What did you like best? What didn’t you like? Was there a particular update that floored you with disappointment or raised your hype to incredible heights? How have things been for the past year? Now that we’re less than 24 hours away from Nintendo big E3 Presentation, let’s talk about the road between E3s and what it has meant for you as a Smash fan.

For me, I saw the first trailer late, and so the whole Mega Man thing was spoiled (not really, I'll get to that in a sec) by the image of his face in the thumbnail. Really, whose idea was that?! But for many months before then, I knew that Mega Man was a complete given for the next game. But still, surprises did come. I saw the first scene with Animal Crossing as just a little intro, with the letter I imagined saying something like "Hey, you! New smash bros! Come see!". I was honestly surprised by Villager's introduction as a character. That was glorious. I was laughing the whole time. And then the Wii Fit Trainer. Wow. That was just awesome. I remember being so flipping hyped about it, constantly craving new info. For a few months I checked the internet, preening the pages for news. It was at about this time that I signed up for dear Smashboards, a magical place where I could express my fanboyish love for the series. I remember the initial joy in the form of a certain nostalgia. Every character update is awesome. Nice to see them come home, to use the words of a thread started a while back. I love every new bit of info for this game, even when the updates hit a stale streak, I don't get upset. because I know that whenever that happens, new, important, and exciting stuff is going on behind the scenes. It just builds the hype more, and brings back that smash nostalgia. It's been a wonderful ride, and it's going to be saddening to not have all that speculation and stuff going on, even when it comes back to the Ridley question (we saw him as a stage boss in Pyroshpere, get over it. Wasn't going to happen in the first place) . . . . . . (don't hurt me) I just love when we come together and talk about smash. But although I'm going to miss not knowing and wondering about it, I'm going to love knowing and playing it that much more! It's been a great ride and I love all of it!!!

I know this shouldn't be my most hype moment so far. but the Ridley salt from the direct is probably the best memory I've had so far.

Greninja not being mewtwo is also high up there.

It's been... sort of rough to be honest. Last time with Brawl it was mostly happy days, everyone had sky high expectations and were allowed to. This time around there has always been someone pretending to be a cop behind you telling you what is acceptable to wish for and what isn't, and they have continously been proven wrong by Sakurai himself. Fan-made rules on speculation has made this feel a lot more restricted and less fun to be honest.

That doesn't mean it hasn't been fun though, there have been many fun and memorable moments. For me personally I've had the most fun with my fellow Ridley comrades, my god have we had some fun moments, it's sort of unreal how many things have come off of my favorite video game character who outside of Smash isn't treaten with such humor and with such scale (eheheh), all the artwork and internal jokes have made it a great and fun experience. The Ridley community this time has been a ton better than last time, say what you will about Ridley's chances and our grasping at straws, but I think it's safe to say we've had some of the most fun this run, even if we've also had to endure the most from both the community and the developer.

Hard to believe we actually ARE less than 24 hours away to E3. I won't be attending, but streams will hopefully make up for that. Smash is seriously one of my "up there" games, I've been always following it, and I will continue to. Also, I can't even describe my hype for both the games, at Summer, AND Winter. It kind of died down for me, though. Not for good, at least. My hopes are up there, and I'm going to be on the floor when tomorrow comes. I can't wait to see what comes next.

After this game comes, there will be new Miiverse posts to laugh at (or get banned at), new tournaments, and a new experience overall to share with others. It's been fun with speculation, all the hype, THROWING YOUR COMPUTER OUT THE WINDOW BECAUSE YOUR MOST HOPED FOR CHARACTER WASN'T ANNOUNCED, and following all the events. Back to the present, E3 is right around the corner, and some of us are going to actually experience the Smash itself. We're finally (almost) here, and I'm just waiting to see what Smash has to offer.

Little Mac; that was the update that gave me that Smash magic that was missing up until that point. It reminded me of the anticipation relating to Brawl, it reminded me of what it is like to understand a character that you do not know a lot about, it reminded me of what it feels like to get a recognizable and prominent character that you personally adore into Smash Brothers. However, I am not one to ponder in the past. My greatest Smash memory is coming shortly; my fate rests on Ridley's shoulders and that feeling is what makes the speculation living. There are real consequences at stake, and that is what I need to make speculation worth something.

I agree with this but I also think a lot of it has to do with a lot of us being older, especially those who stuck around from the Brawl days. At the time, I honestly thought Brawl was going to be the final video game I really invested time before "adulthood swept in" (whatever the hell that means) but now I'm 26 and here just as often as I was in the old days despite grad school and multiple jobs. It might not be the same in your culture but in the US adults are kind of taught to keep their expectations grounded to avoid disappointment and I feel that kind of applies here.

It's probably taught over here too, but I'm out of the norm regardless. It's just been pretty frustrating that there's always been someone to poke you on your back for whacky concepts and ideas when that's exactly what Smash is about. But I see where you're coming from, a lot of people's expectations were waaaay too high for Brawl, so people are trying to lower them this time, and that's fine if they didn't force it upon others. Mind you I've caught myself doing exactly that too, the behaviour is contagious somehow.

It's been....quite the ride to this point. It really has.
Last year around the time of E3 was a little rough, and I completely forgot the event was even happening. But one day I walk into school and - whoopie doo! All these new games!
And one of them was Super Smash Brothers 4. I knew the game was coming at some point or another, but now it was real.
And so for the past year my friends and I have talked and talked and talked, all about Smash, who we want to see in the game, who we'd love to see but we know will never make it in (I'm lookin' at you, Viewtiful Joe), the stages and the release date and....everything.
And then I eventually joined Smashboards! And I don't talk much here - I've never talked much. Not to good with the making friends/starting conversations/pushing myself into a conversation stuff - but I've loved every second here.
Part of me wishes the game was delayed so all this speculation could continue. But only a tiny part.
My favorite moment has got to be the Smash Direct we had. Not a moment in the Direct, but the Direct itself. Getting home from school and realizing "the stream is still going", forcing myself to wait until it was over so I could watch it in it's entirety, "ooh"-ing anf "ah"-ing over and over, thinking Greninja was Mewtwo, laughing when Sakurai became the substitute doll, just....everything. Every second of it.
For me, I still have one day longer than anyone else to speculate. I'm going to have to wait until Wednesday to watch the E3 Nintendo Direct, which means tomorrow I'm going to need to avoid the entirety of Smashboards.
And boy, I can't wait to see what Nintendo is going to show us.

This is my first speculating period in Smash Bros... I've been into Smash Bros ever since the 64 days, but I never thought to find a community online to debate and speculate. So almost 6 months ahead of E3 2013, I decided to support my favorite characters for the game, and I lurked around here for a few weeks, before jumping in. And my, what a jump it has been. I've met so many great people here, and we've had our marvelous, good, and not so great days along the way, but If I could trade it in, I wouldn't. The daily updates have added just a tiny bit of spice and excitement into my last year... it almost makes me sad to see it go.

But, with one thing passing comes another, we'll have just as good of a time playing with SSB4 until SSB5 is announced, then we'll start this whole thing over again.

Keep on keeping on guys. :)

This has been the first smash bros game that I've followed and it has been so fun the whole way through. Thanks to the reveal I was able to find and join this forum. This place has helped me survive the wait for smash 4. It's been fun and I hope to smash with you all soon.

Honestly, it feels unreal that E3 is coming tomorrow. I still remember last year's conference with vivid memories. I was sound asleep when suddenly I got a text message from a buddy of mine that simply read "MEGAMAN!!!!!!!!" in all caps and a huge amount of exclamation points. I hurriedly woke up and saw the trailer and, lo and behold, Megaman.

I was instantly taken back to the feeling of waiting for Brawl. I stayed up every night to see every POTD and I remember fondly the speculation people had. Seeing the new trailer just made me... soo happy, and the reveals that happened post it, well, I was even more happy.

It has been quite a while ride, from people trying to bring the game down to others picking it back up, this has been a fun experience, and as I hope Smash4 satisfies all expectations, I'd love to come back here when Smash 5 comes closer to a healthier, more unified community. Yeah I know it's a long shot but only a game like Smash4 could achieve such a feat.

Hmm, it's been since 2012 since the game was announced, but they revealed the first trailer in 2013.

I am seriously hyped up for this game; Smash Bros is probably one of my favourite franchises of all time. I especially remember the early 2000's and all the popularity it had, including the competitive scene.

I can't wait for the e3 presentation to finally be shown, and for them to finally reveal some more characters, stages, and items. I'm also going to the SmashFest at my local Best Buy.
