Even though your friend wasn't really showing good sportsmanship or knowledge of the game, he's your friend. I think the best way to handle this is to ignore his rude remarks and instead help him learn more about Smash. That way, he'll get to know why rolling/spamming isn't the best options and that edge-guarding isn't "cheep."

Most importantly, you wouldn't lose a friend over a trivial (although wonderful) game like Smash.

I'm not ripping a friendship apart because of it. I've tried to give him tips for Smash, but he won't listen to an "Edge Guarding" player like me, who is also apparently inferior to eight player smash with Roy, because I'm trying to find myself in the mess of Level 9 CPUs that other friends thought it would be a good idea to fight against. I'm not saying he's a bad friend, he just needs to actually listen to me when it comes to this game. I may not be a veteran like some of my friends, but god damn, do I know more than them because of the community.

Please don't take me the wrong way; I'm not criticizing you for what you did or saying you're bad at Smash. Maybe the next time you two play you could try to convince him of the advantages of tactics such as edge-guarding, and if he refuses to listen like you said, have a special match in which neither one of you can roll excessively, spam projectiles, or edge-guard.

That way, if you win, you'll prove that edge-guarding wasn't why you always win against him, but because of pure skill. Perhaps then he would begin to respect you and listen to what you say. :)

Just settle it in Smash. Beat the crap out of him and make person learn the hard way on how to get better. They will either get better or give up.
