The Original Brawl - Some Thoughts

It is said that when Masahiro Sakurai was asked to make the next Smash Bros. game, the original idea was no where near Brawl at all. What Sakurai was actually asked to create or RE CREATE, was Super Smash Bros. Melee, just with Online play. I'm guessing it wouldn't have been the same game JUST with online play. Maybe Sakurai would add one or two new characters or stages, but that's about it in my opinion.

The point of this thread is to discuss your opinions on this "Original Brawl/Melee 2.0/Melee Online" or whatever you want to call it. Now that we've seen some of the Dojo's updates, and what Brawl is becoming, would you rather have Melee Online, or Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Would copying an entire game and just adding Online Play be really worth it? , or would you rather have a completely new experience?

Also, here's a big question:
Considering Online Play for Brawl hasn't been COMPLETELY and entirely confirmed yet, would you rather have Melee Online, or Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

Please discuss intelligently.

I would hate Melee 2.0.

So I would much rather have Brawl which will most likely have online anyway, so it's a win-win.

He means if Brawl weren't online.

And I would rather have Brawl, due to the fact it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't unique, and was just a copy. And Nintendo has to keep other things in mind, the main reason why I don't think it was Melee 2.0 was because at the time, only about 1/4 of Wii users had online connectivity, and they we're still working with Wifi. It would be far too... invaluable at the time, so thats why I think it's brand new. But yeah, give me Brawl.

I would rather have melee online than brawl not online, but of course I would rather have Brawl if they were both online.

I feel most people probably feel the same way.

I'm talking about Brawl WITHOUT online play.

But yeh, I agree with Sariku. Online at the time of "Melee 2.0" was way too risky,

Really? Are you sure? You'd give up a totally new Smash Bros. experience, just to play a game-that-we've-been-playing-for-years Online?
Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but I personally think it'd be a rip-off.

EDIT: UGH. Sorry for double posting. Really. I hate seeing my name twice, it's annoying....not to mention my signature.

I know I would still prefer Brawl. But online is most likely going to happen anyway so i'm not saying that it isn't going to to happen.

I'd have to disagree. Most people (and by that I mean the majority of Smash players) want something new. We've had Melee for 6+ years now. That's a long time to be playing the same game. Most want Brawl, not Melee 2.0 or Melee online.

Of course, Brawl + Online would be the best possible outcome. But even w/o online Brawl promises to be epic.

Here's to hoping!

Ooooohhh! Well in that case I'd most likely take Brawl over Melee 2.0. (As long as Brawl has Black Knight and/or Captain Olimar)
I agree. I don't care much for Online Play with Brawl right now. From what I've seen, I would not mind no online play what-so-ever, because IMO, Brawl just looks THAT delicious.

Yeh Aryman, agreed to the fullest. What you said is kinda what I said in reply to Mr. GAW.
The only reason I want Brawl over Melee Online is because we've had Melee for over SIX YEARS now, and like most people, I really want a new nintendo-fighter experience.

Edit: Omg. Sorry for double posting again. Give me infraction points if you must. Sorry.

Well I'd really prefer to have online play, it's hard to get better playing against the same set of friends if you can't go to tournaments. :ohwell:

Really it seems that great now. Yeah Subspace looks awesome but if there is a awesome roster then yeah online wouldn't be the end of the world. But online is definitely a plus.

I agree. Only ONE of my friends is worth playing against, and my parents refuse to drive me to smash fests and tourneys, so I would really love Online Play for Brawl, but it's not a must for me.

It's true. From what we've seen on the site, Brawl is shaping up to be pretty amazing, but looks can be deceiving. We'll have to wait and see. But if Brawl isn't that great, Online Play would totally catch it's fall. Online = +1.

PS: I won't be posting in here until around 11pm. I'm leaving for my girlfriends house. I hope to see this thread develope intelligently with varying opinions while I'm gone. =]

I'm more excited about Brawl for having more characters, a flexible as well as easier control scheme to attract even more players and more emphasis on character balance. A lot of the things in Melee like infinite waveshining has gotten out of hand, though nearly everyone has either a huge advantage from the game favouring speed or their own exploit. (Super Wavedash, Float Cancel, any sort of projectile cancel ect.) A lot of the new mechanics we'll get woll be intentional thus more controlled by the developers in moderation of effectiveness. I'm sure there'll still be flaws in the gameplay, though not as severe. :p

Thus I'll take Brawl sans online play over Melee post online play any day.

Obviously you are unaware of what I was talking about in the Original Post then. I'm sure that what I said in the Original Post is 100% true.

Edit: Also I'm back early because my parents are lazy.

Looking from the Brawl Farore's Wind to Melee's is so dramatic. I would take Brawl just for the huge graphic update (well not so much graphics as detail I guess).

Yeh the detail in Brawl is amazing. Have you noticed the characters all make eye-contact?

I'm pretty sure that the idea Nintendo had was to just add a few characters and online play to Melee, basically porting it to the Wii with a few upgrades. I think that was Nintendo's plan if Sakurai DID NOT want to continue his series himself, not that that is what Nintendo wanted him to do once he accepted to create Brawl.

I would take Brawl-no online rather than melee 2.0 HANDS DOWN. Some of my friends really do want melee 2.0 and it really makes me mad.

I'm dying for a new experience, you know, same smash flavor but a NEW GAME. If it wasn't i might just skip it.
Besides if brawl didn't have online(Yoshi forbid) i think the story mode could more than
make up for it.

I know I probabally sound dumb by saying this but... probabally melee online becauseI personally woud love online since I can only go to a tournament once a mont in the summer, I don't know how it will be for school months.

Btw this is off topic but if Brawl is online, would you need to have the internet connection? I just got a wii and don't know if I have to spend 5$.

Actually, what Sakurai said was that, if he WASN'T recruited back onto the development team, they were going to make Melee 2.0. This is because Sakurai wasn't on board yet when they decided to make another Smash Bros game.
So, when Sakurai came back and joined the dev team, there was no need to just make a "Melee 2.0".

I mean, that's what the main page was on the old Dojo site, and it was there for like a year, I don't understand how you missed it.

Anyway, I'd choose Brawl over Melee Online.

id still rather have non-online brawl...

with the improvements, its a better game, and i have nhuman competition
See but some people have no way of getting to tournaments and their friends are total scrubs, like me.

I'm not saying I want Melee 2.0, but I'm saying look on both sides of the discussion. You may have human competition, but others do not.

Well.

I would like to see an entirely revamped game, new features, new characters, better graphics, and online. Melee was/is a great game. But some of us could use a refreshment eh?

This is speaking from the point of a casual player. You competitive Melee players might like your Melee just the way it is now, adding online would be awesome eh? But still, even though it is classic, getting some nice graphics to catch up to the new gen would be nice.

Not everyone has human competition. Has long as they don't dumb the game down for online. Give me a online mode even if it lags the **** out of everyone. Better playing with some people than not playing at all. :D

If it lags hard I'm NEVER going online.
You must as well just play CPU's if you're going to have to suffer through a 30 minute match that should only take 4.
