Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings a lot of changes from Smash 4. One change players caught on to right away was how knockback works. While the formula and mechanics are the same from past games, the actual physics of launching opponents have been given an overhaul. In addition to distance, Knockback now scales in speed depending on attack power and damage percentage. Characters fly fast, but then slow down once they reach their apex. Many fans have likened this to hitting a balloon really hard and watching it travel fast before, slowing down. While top players were initially unsure about the new physics from their hands on time, due to the jarring, foreign nature of it. The more I watch gameplay, the more I feel this was Ultimate's best physics change.
Sure, you can talk about the changes to ending lag, and the ability to act out of dash, but I think the new Balloon physics of Ultimate are quickly becoming my favorite change. Mainly because of impact. Launching an opponent in Ultimate simply looks way cooler and feels more satisfying than any prior Smash game, even Melee's launch physics feel slow and clunky in comparison. It makes the player feel powerful for punishing their opponents or landing a big hit. It also helps make fights flow better, because characters can recover from high knockback faster now, it allows you more time to retaliate, which means better paced matches and more dynamic edge-guards, way better than the generic "stand at the ledge and wait" problems that plagued Smash 4.
A lot of people were unsure of this at first, but does anybody else feel the same way as me?
