I'm sort of new to Smash, I never really played it much before, but I have Smash Bros 4 and I can't decide between, Kirby, Mr.G&W, Pacman, or Yoshi. I used to main Kirby in Brawl, But now I just can't decide.

Imo, Mario is a very beginner friendly, easy to understand. You won't find someone more similar to Toon Link than Link though.

Regarding the Links, I'm not comfortable enough yet with the game to say which of them is better, but I don't think that should stop you nor be the reason for playing either characters. If anything, you can take FalKoopas advice and play both:

"There's nothing good or bad about maining a certain character. I think it's a good way to have 4 characters to play as while having to memorise only 3 movesets."

Of course, they're not exaclty the same moveset, but they do have similar moves.

I'm just going to echo the guy above me by saying that I would also like to main either Toon Link or Olimar. I choose these characters because I am naturally a campy player- I enjoyed Brawl's speed more than Melee's (though I still think Melle the better game). Anyways, I haven't really seen much Tink representation, more so Link; would you guys say Link is superior in this game? Every "tier list", for what they're worth, has put Link above Tink, and people say his sword attacks are laggy, though I don't see it.
Link has a lot of raw power in his moves so he can actually fend for himself if the opponent gets too close. Toon Link can't do that so well. But yes, Link's attacks are rather laggy compared to the say, Fox or Falcon.

Well, you don't have to limit yourself to just one character. You can use Yoshi because he's much better than he has even been competitively. To get a hang of a character, try using him in Classic or Training, or watch a few videos of them. That should help.

Hi, I am new to smash boards forums, and the main reason I signed up is because I needed help to find my main(no pun intended).
I know I must look like the typical new guy noob (and I probably am) but I really need some help.

I've watched video saying get to know your playstyle and all, but the problem is I actually have no idea. I tried maining capt falcon but I just did not have fun playing with him.

(By the way, I've played all ssbs, so I am not a complete noob at all, but more a competetive noob.) Maybe a game with someone experienced could help me find a main, I don't know.

Thanks in advance! :-)

Well, if you're not sure, main random until you find that character you like playing. Just a fun little thing to find that one character or more that you actually like. Otherwise, just try who look cool, or from games you like. :)

Need a secondary. My main is diddy. I want someone that is easy to play competitively at tournaments. I don't care about being flashy. I don't want it to be shiek yoshi or Mario. I like to play defensively but still hold my own in close quarters. (But I'm willing to change that if need be) please help

It's not much to go on, but I'll try to help the best I can. Based off the way you worded your post, it sounds like you want to play a zoning character. With that in mind here are some characters who you might want to play:

R.O.B. (This one is probably the closest to what you described.)
Olimar
Robin
Rosalina & Luma

I'd recommend you try those characters out and see how you like them. If I'm completely misinterpreting what you want, feel free to correct me.

I was gonna ask this and be like the 3rd poster on this thread, but my wifi crashed and I forgot.

Anyways, my main is Kirby, and while I LOVE to play him, I like the character, and I win as him, I get a lot of beef for being campy and not approaching. Also, his weight pisses me off, and I am thinking of going competitive, and being a Kirby main won't win me Niagra UGC (unless I try REALLY hard, which I am).

To add to this, my secondary is Meta Knight, who does not cover Kirby's bad MUs at all, but I like playing him and I win as him. I 3rd Toon Link but I suck as him and just started with him so I won't go into detail.

Should I switch my main/secondary to a higher tiered character? I'm known as a low tier hero in my friend group, but now that I'm getting more into tourneys, maybe switching at least my secondary to a high tier wouldn't be a bad idea.

I like aerial characters that have a good recovery and a decent combo game. The one that comes to mind for me is Sheik, but I used to main her and I simply don't like her, same with ZSS. To be truthful, I don't like a LOT of higher tiered characters. Diddy, Rosa, Sonic, Lucario, Yoshi, and others.

I legit don't know what to do :/

EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about, the only high tier I actually like is Luigi, but I have a habit of d-tilting and dash attacking with him, but those are two of his bad moves. I also hate his recovery, should I try to main him.

EDIT 2: I have counted, and I have experimented with now exactly half the characters, with another like 15 I am committed to never main (Most top tiers + characters I hate playing). Other characters I have thought of maining are the following:

Pac-man: Too campy for me, doesn't feel right.

DK: I can't do well with him, I can't combo with him, recovery is too bad.

Peach: feels weird, really high learning curve, I miss my combos.

Mario: Doesn't feel right, combo game is repetitive for me, 5 people main him in my Skype group, bad recovery.

Lucina: No combos, eh recovery, worse Marth (and I don't like Marth either)

Palutena: Just meh, no combos, recovery is average, doesn't feel right.

There are others too (Like Pits, Shulk, Dr. Mario, any of the heavys) but I don't have many options. Maybe I should stick to my guns.

Don't worry about tiers unless you think your character is truly holding back. Try playing them in tournaments, mainly because tier lists aren't finalized yet, and show your characters true potential. If you do want a secondary, Play Luigi if you like him, just at least enjoy who you're playing.

Hi i need a bit of help to find a main and or secondary too i just can't decide who to play after trying almost every character. I like playing luigi, sonic, bowser, Wario and Megaman.

Luigi : i have a lot of fun playing him i can make great combo with him and a lot of move are satifying to pull off but i feel like there is some MU where i can't do much or because he is so floaty he can be easily punish so sometime it end up frustrating to play even if i love him so much. I though i could main him and get a secondary for it bad MU but i don't seems to enjoy the character that cover those MU.

Sonic : he is natural to me he is the character i play best with. I don't feel like he have that much of bad MU but he is not as satisfying to play than luigi. So sometime it make me wonder. Should i play him and just get a secondary that i can mess around with time to time since Sonic doesn't seems to have that much of bad MU.

Bowser: Well i always loved heavy character, hard hitter. I have fun winning with him and loosing with him but since he is big, once i get juggle or i loose the stage advantage it can take quite a while to to be able to do anything. He is fun but always loosing can get boring xD

Wario : Funny character, enjoyable to play but not too many combo's not much to say.

Megaman: i love to play him in team fight but in 1v1 projectile base is not much my thing i prefer to be near my opponent and not throwing thing at them

So could anybody give me a hint or opinion to help me choose a main and a secondary from what i told you. It seems blury in my head maybe you guy can help me out, maybe there is a duo in there that work well together

Edit 1: i am a starter in the smash game i still don't know how to do all the tech still in learning

I'm new to smashboards but have been playing it for a while. I want to get into the competitive game, which should be easy since I live in one of the biggest smash cities in the world, Houston. I would be really grateful if someone could help me find a character and if someone could give me some tips for starting of competitively. In Brawl, I mained Olimar. So far I like Ness but I'm not really sure...

Newfound Luigi main, but I'm having alot of trouble getting grabs off (In fact I have alot of trouble in GENERAL getting grabs off).
I'm open to suggestions for less grapple-heavy characters that don't require grabbing to get combos off.
(I'll also make a quick note that I have more or less have Ike as my secondary)

I'm looking for secondary's to compliment my Duck Hunt. Any ideas?
Depends on what you mean by complement.

Do you want a character with different playstyles? One that can cover a hard matchup? Or another reason in particular?

Fireball -> grab works if the opponent reacts with shielding your incoming Fireball. Even though Luigi's ground mobility isn't the greatest, his Fireball complements this by travelling at a speed that let's him run behind it.

I'm sure there are more ways to get grabs off with Luigi, but that's a question better left to Luigi mains to answer. Check out the Luigi character board here, you'll find more answers there.

Having a wonderful time on For Glory, playing with Sonic, since I love him like my own, I enjoy playing him and he has only about 3-6 bad match-ups and confusing people is fun, too.

aaand... I get rekt online with Sonic. Oh no. Now I probably should pick a character who's not like Sonic, but still good.

I don't really feel like I have a 'true' secondary because I can't pick on one, yet, but the closest ones are:

Mario: I've played him alot during the opening days of SSB4 (and previous installments), stopped playing him pretty much for some reason. Lot of combo ability, which is every Mario mains reason to main him, but what turns me off is his recovery. It's not the biggest turn off though. So I play him when I'm in the mood (Why does Mario even have a bad recovery? DF)

Peach: My brother says I have an OP Peach, but in all honesty she's far from the best. And as much as I love her as a character, I'm not playing her in this game, when I really should. I just think her fair is cheap, especially if you're throwing it out all random-like. It's basically the move Peach only has to use and she'll win.

Pit: Basically the closest to a secondary for me, next to Mario. Arrows good (and hilarious) for gimping. Upperdash Arm feels easier to kill with, and GOOD SMASH ATTACKS, a reflector... what's not the like about Pitty Pat? Oh yeah, That easy to punish recovery. It looks good but it will lead you to your death 60% of the times if you're using Pit/Dark Pit.

Alph (Olimar): My secondary in SSBB. Sure, he lost his Pikmin but he's still good with only 3. He's a true fighter. B) Getting that percentage is basically easy, too... But as much as I love Alph as a character and as much as I enjoy playing as him, I find myself losing to Top Tiers due to his lack of weight (especially to Rosalina, grrr)... which is the biggest turn off for me.

So, if I main Sonic, who should I pick? Sonic's moves are pretty slow, despite his fast speed, so Mario would be a good choice? I'm still considering Pit, though. Or give me suggestions, since I'm sure other characters in this game are the opposite of Sonic and still are good.

....Or do I need a character that is like Sonic? Considering that they beat me with him, I don't think that's a bright Idea, but hey, I'm the one asking all these questions.

I don't need assistance over here (known my mains since June 2014, aw yis~), but I meant to thank @ FalKoopa FalKoopa for creating this thread. It's an invaluable resource for people who need help with this sort of thing~

@ ImReallyFeelingIt ImReallyFeelingIt , in what way are you getting punished with Pit's recovery? I main Pit and I can't honestly recall ever getting punished for it.

Really hard for me to find a main, I play pretty much half the cast. I'm looking for a character that has the same playing experience as Snake (tactical, placing traps, creative fighting, improvised combo's). But most characters only have a part of that.

What I see as potential candidates for me (most to least favorite):
- Mii Gunner (with explosive customs)
- Rosalina & Luma
- Peach
- Bowser Jr.
- Duck Hunt Duo
- Pacman

Any opinions on this? (Maybe I'll just play multiple characters, which is fun as well :p)

Well, no Smash 4 character specialises in traps like Snake did, but Diddy Kong and ROB do rely on stage control a fair bit. But they don't seem to be among your favourites, so eh.

Duck Hunt. Control the stage and make the opponent respect your space. Fill the screen with cans and clay pigeons, pressure them to hell and back and punish them with crazy disjointed smashes.

It's not the same as Snake, no character is, but it's a damn good style in its own right. Ticks all of the above boxes and looks neat doing it~

Having a little debate with myself that maybe someone can help out. I'm debating if I should keep Dr. Mario as my secondary or drop him for Wario. I have been playing as the Doc for a little while now and I'm getting pretty decent with him and he is really fun.

Then there is Wario who I also enjoy. I used to main Wario as a Secondary back in Brawl and he's my Main in PM. I started playing with him again in Smash 4 and a few people I fought said I have a nice Wario.

Well let's look at the differences and your current secondaires and mains. DHD and Pac-Man are both good zoning characters that with both combined cover most match ups where zoning is advantageous. D3 is a good heavy character that can cover those matches where it's applicable to use heavies. Doc and Wario are rather similar in their roles although I'd say Doc is more combo oriented and Wario is more read oriented. Doc can take matchups where the opponent has a hard time gimping while wario is extremely difficult to gimp.

In all honesty I think Doc is better to have in your pocket as it's a good mixup to bring to a fight as Wario can be handled quite similar to your other characters.

TL;DR: Doc.

What other characters should I main?
I use the gamePad as my controller
My characters are Peach, Zelda, Kirby and my secondary is Jigglypuff, and to a lesser extent yoshi(I'm still learning because he has some odd physics that make him very weird to play and because I need to learn to not somehow use my jump when I try to use egg throw in the air.)

I am sure many can see some slight general problems that my characters actually have in common,
I feel like I need a more campy/speedy character
Ness's smashes and recovery are a little too weird for me.
Villager is fun, but is also kind of weird with his moveset.

I don't know. I just hope I find another character to main that can also help me.
My characters are good don't get me wrong, but the fact they all have similar problems, generally, makes it kind of hard against certain characters.
The main one being DDD because I am soooo bad at avoiding gordo throw.

Look at your schedule and your commitment: do you believe you can put enough time into Duck Hunt, Doc, and Wario? If you can't, I'd consider trying Wario and Doc out in serious matches (preferably tournaments) and see which one you like best. It's usually during the matches that matter most where many players find characters they connect with.

I've been playing around with Wario myself. I used to think he had been nerfed and gutted from Brawl -> Smash Wii U, but as I kept playing with him and experimenting with him, I found this to not be the case. In fact, I'm considering spending more time with Wario than with Shulk now.

My knowledge of Wario isn't very in depth at the moment, but the positives I like about him:
  • Good air mobility, a bit worse than Brawl but still amazing. He moves around like a heavyweight Jigglypuff.
  • D-tilt is a very fast ground poke, and has very little cool-down. One of his best ground moves, in my opinion.
  • F-air and N-air are very good air control moves and push opponents away from Wario. N-air can allow for combos too, with the way it pops opponents above Wario.
  • His Chomp is a command grab that ignores shields, and it will also grab an opponent after they do a ledge getup. It also lingers as long as you keep Wario's mouth open (hold B)
  • Wario Waft can be charged faster by eating Wario's Bike now (the sound effect got nerfed tho, lol, but same with damage output :( ).
I'm sure there's more about this character over at the Wario boards, so if you want, join me in my treasure hunt quest for more Wario knowledge and treasures.

That sounds exactly like Sheik to me, lol.

It's hard to find the KO with Sheik sometimes, but her main go to moves are B-air and Bouncing Fish. There are ways to combo and follow up into these moves as well: I know that Forward throw -> Bouncing Fish works at certain damage % dependent on the character you're fighting.

I don't think you need to swap playstyles. You seem to like characters who have good aerial presence. I'd recommend giving Wario a try.

His air mobility was nerfed a bit from Brawl but still good, and his ground game was sped up a bit in this game. This gives Wario a nice balance of air and ground presence (see his D-tilt). He has great horizontal recovery thanks to his Bike and an amazing gimping game offstage. He also has some very powerful attacks at his disposal, though some of them require a read since they have commitment attached to them.

Wario's bike is also effective as an item. If you pick it up while it's onstage, you can carry it around and throw it at an opponent. Since this is a heavy item, the opponent isn't be able to catch it like with Peach's turnips.

He can also eat King Dedede's Gordos with Chomp, or simply hit them back at him with Forward air.

I have so many mains... It s a hard choice! I like my Mii swordsman (My mii in my profile pic), shulk, ness, and ludwig. Which character is better?
Mii Swordsman and Ludwig are widely regarded as low-tier, but I love them; Shulk and Ness both require a lot of understanding and commitment, but they're extremely useful in the right hands.

Nobody's really better, per se, it really depends on what you're looking for. Shulk, being a swordsman with slow, strong attacks is closer to Mii Swordfighter, if that helps.

I need help with my main. As of right now my main is Sheik and i find her to be very good but i am finding someone who is fast, good with combos and pretty powerful who do you think i should chose? As of right now i am trying to improve on the game.
Captain Falcon. Definitely.

Duck Hunt. Control the stage and make the opponent respect your space. Fill the screen with cans and clay pigeons, pressure them to hell and back and punish them with crazy disjointed smashes.

It's not the same as Snake, no character is, but it's a damn good style in its own right. Ticks all of the above boxes and looks neat doing it~
Duck Hunt Dog may be a good one for me. For some reason I like playing him agressively much more than using him for zoning. This still works really well, because I use the B moves for additional pressure. :p

I'm probably gonna use Peach as secondary and maybe Mii Gunner as a third (Mii depends on whether custom moves will become big).

Thanks again to those who replied. I was thinking of testing both Dr. Mario and Wario out in For Glory and seeing who I feel more better with. As much as I would love to enter a Tournament, I can't seem find one anywhere where I live. If I could I would defiantly try it out.

When I first started playing my win percentage was around 85% lol, it has since dipped to around 75% and I just find myself simply outmatched. 95% of my losses, I would say, were very close. There were only a few times I really got destroyed and had no chance on winning, but I still wouldn't say I'm as good as I thought I would be. I main with Toon Link (1vs1) and Ness (2vs2) as of right now, but don't really particularly enjoy the feel of these characters, I just use them because I feel they were easiest to adapt to for my style. Usually I like to keep a distance and grab whenever possible -- but it appears I've become too predictable and don't really adapt to my opponents style too well. Would anybody (top players) mind sparring against me soon so I can see where I stand and get firsthand advice on what I need to work / approve on? I've been trying out a lot of new characters, I just need somebody with good speed and good projectiles as that's what fits me best I believe, but maybe an outside source would see that differently if we faced off.

Hi, I've been maining Yoshi, and I feel pretty comfortable with him, but for some reason it feels like I'm better with Dedede, but I worry that he has too many bad matchups to be competitively viable, I know it's just for glory but my win pct. with D3 is something like 80% and with Yoshi it's more like 60%. Of the two which do you think I should spend more time practicing? I'm headed to a tourney this Saturday, who do I roll with?

Also, to confirm that I seem to play better with D3 and it's not just FG lag, etc. I played a friend (local matches) last night who I usually have a tough time with as Yoshi probably lose and win an even amount. But when I was using Dedede I had no trouble taking out his Rosalina, Pika and Bowser, all of which are his mains, most of the matches I 2-stocked him.

Finally, I've been trying to learn Sheik but I just cannot finish a stock, which seems to be a common issue, I don't intend to use Sheik as much as Yoshi or D3, but I'm wanting to keep Sheik as a potential counterpick to deal with Sonics. Is this a good idea?

Two mains and one secondary sounds fine to me.

It may be the case that your friend lost to your D3 because he doesn't know how to play against him yet, while he is used to how you play as Yoshi. So, I suggest playing with other (offline) friends too.

Hello~

I have been playing smash since the Melee days, but I have only began thinking about competitive play in Smash 4. I've just played whatever character I felt like playing, never truly learning any specific character or play style...

My two mains in this game are :4greninja: and :4villager: because they are just immensely fun to play as, but I want to have more insight into what character I should use as a secondary.

I once was told by someone who is pretty good at smash that I have a "very reactive play style" and I didn't truly understand what that meant and I didn't have enough time to ask him... so I have been somewhat knowing my play style, but not knowing how to capitalize with it. That being said, I was jut wondering what type of character someone with a reactive play style would use, or specific ones? Sorry if that makes no sense...

Thanks all!

I'm not an expert or anything but Bowser is sort of a reactive character and would be a good secondary to what you have already as he is very different from Villager and Greninja, he'd be a good character to have in your pocket as a surprise.

Well, I have a main, but I'm having issues picking a true secondary. I have a ton of characters I like playing aside from Shulk, but I need some help narrowing it down. Mind helping me out? :)

Robin, Villager, Captain Falcon, Rosaluma, King DeDeDe, Ness, or Little Mac.
I'm not sure which out of these I should put time into learning. Any ideas?

Hmm, I've never actually considered him... so I think I'll try to pick him up. Thanks!
