I don't like the gear look either.

Anyone remember the stadium select in Mario Strikers Charged, where it showed the players' captains projected as holograms? I'd love if Smash 4 did something like that.

I'm all for the honeycomb style, with the unlocked characters's cells looking like bolted metal cubes (Super Mario Style) or unwrapped gift boxes (Animal Crossing Style).
About the rest, I like the giant icons and many subfolders like in Brawl, but I prefer bright colorful writing on dark background, kinda like in Melee, rather than the opposite.

I approve of the honeycomb style. I really like it.

Not so fond of the gears though. :ohwell:

"Honeycomb" style looks cool, but it doesn't fit well.
I think the icons should stay as squares.

Also, have the selected character do fighting poses on the screen like in the original Smash Bros.

I think the Honeycomb style would only fit well with a much greater number of characters.

Certainly not as many on that image posted on the first page though.

I'm fine with any look. The reason I like the gear look is because it reminds me of my engineering class.

Hexagons seem more practical though.

I think the honeycomb look might be best suited. Either that or the way it is in other SSB games.

What's REALLY important is that epic feeling you get when you first get the game and you go to the character select screen for the first time :D

I just remembered another possible option:

Now think of the same with about 50 characters that starts as the few ones above.

It could work if they decided to be complicated and separate characters into categories and put them on different "pages" to prevent overcrowding. Of course, there will have to be a way for four people to do it at the same time.

What I really want is a non-bland loading screen when you pick a stage. After you pick a character a huge edgy cool looking VS. would appear in the middle of a divided screen. Depending on whether it is 2, 3, or 4 players the character will do a different pose for the sake of composition. During teams the two characters would be standing next too eachother. They have VS. intros in single player, why not versus.

That's one of the best ideas I've ever heard.

Allow me a question:
What kind of music would you like to hear in the selection screen?
What about these?

I like the arena theme the best. im a sucker when it comes to the epic genre. but we kinda got that in the last game.

one thing is for sure though, the character select theme is gonna need HYPE in it. Heavy metal screeching guitar HYPE.

of course, when you unlock Villager, the theme would change Permanently :awesome:

The True Arena would be a good theme as well.

I'd love to hear a remastered version.

I just hope they don't go for the rectangular look in Brawl. Always seemed so boring and generic to me, and also the random box put at... random in the down right part of it. So bad-looking. Melee was a lot better.
They should make something rhomboid, or like Tekken Tag 2.

Yess... That would be enough cool too. Well, anything not like that in the dream I had where the cells were shaped like tombstones, round on the top and flat on the bottom, with the name of the character under them. Like...

I think it's best if they go with the traditional setup for the screen itself. I personally prefer lighter colors, but I don't mind either way.

Something like this:

For four players, each player could be on a different corner of the screen with the character choices in the center.

I always liked the look of Mortal Kombat 9's character select screen. I think this could work well with Smash. Thoughts?

They could just get really campy with it and have all of the characters animated within their little boxes, eyes centered on the floating hand cursor, hoping desperately that the player will choose them and bestow them with even a short relief from their perpetual, fourth-wall-breaking prison.

The characters should be animated like in SSB64 with the dark color from Melee! :)

About the honeycomb style:

I honestly prefer the exagons standing on their corner, but even like this it's working.

^It's Vampire Saviour/Darkstalkers 3, a fighting game among extra-human creatures (eccept the hardcore version of Little Red Riding Hood in the left middle, under the catwoman).
It's one of the wakiests fighting games after Super Smash Bros, but still anchored to the Street Fighter 2 gameplay model.
