So, for the past few weeks, I've been attempting to try and come up with the perfect list of who will be making it into Brawl. What I've come up with, instead, is a list that I consider is the model that we can almost assuredly expect the roster to follow. So, here goes:
The Confirmed, starting characters:
-Mario
-Peach
-Bowser
-Yoshi
-Wario
-Link
-Zelda
-Kirby
-Pikachu
-Fox
-Samus/ZSS (I'm counting them as one character)
-Donkey Kong
-Diddy Kong
-Pit
-Ike
-Pokemon Trainer
-Meta Knight
Ok, so confirmed so far we have 17 characters. Now, I think, in all logic, about 20 to 24 characters is MOST LIKELY for the starting Lineup.
That leaves me with one GUARUNTEED starting character who has yet to be revealed to us:
-Captain Falcon; He has got to be in the game, there is NO reason to take him out, though his delayed arrival is odd. I'm calling him a starter though.
Now, what we have, based on these numbers, is 2-7 more starters in my predicted starting lineup. most likely for these spots, BUT, could also show up as unlockables:
-An Earthbound character; The Franklin badge confirms the series will have a rep, not to mention a characters traditional experience. Now, I really don't think Ness will get the cut, but I am not ruling it out. If he returns, the starting spot is his. Otherwise, it is Lucas.
-The Ice Climbers; I'm pretty much going to call that if they are in, they are starters. If they are not starters, they are out.
-A second Star Fox rep; Now, speculated as a rep are Krystal, Wolf, and Falco. IF one of them is a starter, I predict it will either be Falco or Krystal, as a protagonist seems most likely for a starting role. If it is an unlockable, I believe it will most likely be Wolf, though if Falco is in, he is still likely for the cut. Also, I'm not going to rule out Slippy. He's 4th on the list.
-A representative from a newer franchise; Ok, this spot is for either Captain Olimar or an Animal Crossing character.in fact, maybe both. They're all very likely, and I'm going to say would probably get a starting spot, but once again, they could be unlockable, too.
-A second Fire Emblem rep; Now, this one is a little less likely for the starting position, and more on the unlockable side. Most likely, I'm going to say Marth, but the Black Knight and Lyn, and Michaiah are all right next to him. There's always Ephraim, too. Now, once again, I think this is more then likely unlockable, but I won't rule out starting position.
Ok, there is 7 possibilities (counting AC rep and Olimar as 2) I consider MOST LIKELY too start. So, if it is 20 or 24 as I predict, that leaves room for all but one of the above.
Next, Unlockables. First off, the characters who are the OBVIOUS choices we know.
-Snake
-Luigi
-Ganondorf
Ok, now, once again, into the specualtion stage. What I consider MOST LIKELY too make the unlockable cut.
-2 more 3rd party reps; I'm calling 2, it just seems more logical. It's essentially confirmed we'll get at least this many, but who is still speculation. Ruling out the out there predictions, I think it's going to be Sonic, Megaman, Simon B., Black Mage, or Geno who make the cut.
-King DeDeDe. He's just... likely.
-A 3rd starfox character: I'm going to say that the series is popular enough for another playable. In the spot, I say it's most likely wolf or falco if the are in, but I won't rule out Krystal. This one is defenitely a tough call, but I think the series will get 3 reps.
-A 3rd Pokemon; Jigglypuff, Lucario, or otherwise, the series massive popularity WILL get another rep, and I'm going to say they will be unlockable.
-Another Meteroid rep; I'm calling a 2nd metroid character an unlockable. I think it's highly likely, and probably Ridley, but any of the bounty hunters from MP:H have a small shot, and there is always Dark Samus.
-The ever sought after WTF character; While I don't think this one is quite as liely as we all think, but the popularity of the idea will probably get some super-obscure character a shot. As to who, I have no idea. Mike Jones?
With my predictions so far, were at 28-32 characters, which, in my opinion, 32 could very well be the stopping point. I'm going to say we will get more though. For my final stage of speculation, these are the areas that I think are really tough to call, but could still make the cut. Nowhere near as likely as the last set of unlockables.
-A third 3rd party. While I think we'll only get 2, yet another 3rd party rep is always a possibility. I already stated who I consider most likely, so I won't repeat it.
-Pokemon #4; Ok, probably the most likely of this section, but still, a tough call. Once again, I won't repeat myself.
-Starfox rep #4; This one is kind of pushing it, but I won't rule it out.
-Another Earthbound character; If Ness is in, this option becomes MUCH MORE likely, but with him on the ropes it's questionable. Of course, even if Ness is out, we could get Flint or someone, which would be awesome.
-Another Zelda characer; I don't want it, but Midna is always a choice. She could make the cut, which is this spot. Cel Link has a chance, too.
-Mr.Game and Watch; He was in melee, so, why not?
That's only 34-38 characters. If there are 45, I'd have no idea what would come next, but these are what I consider the most logical and most likely choices. To close, what I think WILL NOT HAPPEN:
-Another Mario character; the series has PLENTY of representatives.
-Shadow, Protoman, Volgin... 3rd party sidekicks. They aren't Nintendo, so the main character is the only one who is going to make the cut. You can hold me to these words.
-Pichu, Young Link, Dr.Mario... the despised Melee clones. Sorry, they sucked. They aren't coming back.
So, I hope someone takes the time too read this. As far as I'm concerned, this is the closest to any specualtion. I know I wasn't specific, but my goal was more a rough outline then a solid roster, as anything is possible.
