Throwing in my support for Takamaru! He's much more known to the West now than before 4 I'd say, and he's been considered before. The main thing holding Sakurai back was worrying about Western reception, right? I think that gives us hope that he could show up in Smash for Switch.

Takamaru would be super hype. Count me in.

I specifically asked the guy to use both the Smash 4 trophy and the Samurai Warriors 3 artwork.

I guess the low poly Assist Trophy was good enough in his eyes.

Looking at these trends, normally the new day changes around the evening of these times.

Honestly, I can't with good conscience give Takamaru more than a 50% because it's literally a coin flip. I only feel more confident now than I did pre-4 because the foundation's been laid out for people to actually care about him/know what he's from (shoutouts to the 3DS release), Sakurai has also added how many times he's looked at the character as a potential playable entrant, and Smash Ballot numbers had to have influenced the creation of the Ashley and (relevant to this discussion) Takamaru Mii outfits considering they were both already doing their job as Assist Trophies in game already.

Edit: I feel like I could reasonably push it as far as a 60%

I think he’s the most logical retro candidate but I thought that last time too and well, uh, we got thrown a fast curveball on that one. It’s safe to say you can’t predict how Sakurai’s process works. I don’t have high hopes but I’ll at least be thorough in my reasoning for why he’d be chosen. The last thing I’d want is a flood of “ew swordfighter” drowning out reasonable discussion.

Pretty much, just those three in particular.

What they share in common is that they don't suffer from the region exclusivity problem. Takamaru broke out of that thanks to Nintendo of America taking action.

The way I see it, Balloon Fighter doesn't have much to work with (though to be fair they went above and beyond with the Duck Hunt Duo). I remember Sakurai saying something along the lines of them having trouble realizing Mach Rider when they experimented with him(her?) for Melee. Maybe they've figured out how to work it though.

Anyway, Takamaru just seems like the easiest fit, y'know?

I’ve been playing Persona 5 a lot and seeing Yusuke fly around using his katana in a samurai style while wearing the samurai jacket from SMTIV has reminded me a lot of what I’d like to see from Takamaru. Coat flowing in the wind, flying about with every strike, it’s some pretty top-tier aesthetics man.

Aesthetic is at least a good chunk of the reason why Takamaru has been my boy for some time. Remember that at one point the same level of love I show for his inclusion was focused explicitly on Lyn. Smash just needs this man. It's like we've been getting all the frosting and decorations in the world but there's no cake to enjoy it with when considering other play styles, character types and designs already in game and the glaring omission of "The" slash and sheathe samurai/katana user.

We kind of discussed that earlier.

A nosebleed would bump up Smash’s rating to B in Japan. So that will never happen. He could still be shy around girls.

Takamaru is the one and only Nintendo character that fits that samurai motif well.

One can argue Ryoma counts, but I doubt anyone would want another Fire Emblem character.

Fates is not well-liked among the hardcore Nintendo community and people are already gunning for Corrin’s removal. I’m fairly certain having another Fates character would really tip the scales in the wrong directoon.

Which is exactly why a character like Takamaru works better than the likes of Ryoma or any other Fates samurai.

Some can also argue a Sushido Strikers character counts, but they are mostly ninjas and I doubt that series will sell well.

Both being owned by Namco and they have competition with other Namco characters like Heihachi and the like.

As far as Nintendo ninjas, we have Greninja and Sheik already. Unless people are clamoring for characters like Kat & Ana and Fire Emblem Fates' Kaze and Saizo.

Takamaru's Ninja Castle was a fun minigame, it managed to give Murasame a better boss theme than the original.

Then again, Murasame Jo's theme played for the entire castle while the second phase theme was a generic "alien final boss" theme.
