Those that don't know, I work in a vet. I see a few pets with good, respectable owners come through. I mostly see pets that do not deserve what they are going through. Some people should not be aloud to own animals (little lone have offspring of their own).

I just kind of want to get the word out and let some of you know what is going own all over the world. Who knows, maybe some of you are guilty of many of the same things.

6/28/07

Boy- 12yrs old. 63 lbs. K-9, Black lab X
-Congestive heart failure due to heart worms.- This was interesting. The owner claimed no money yet wanted to put the dog on fluids and hope he would get better. This dog had no chance what-so-ever. We did as he requested and left him overnight. In the morning we thought he was dead. He released his bowels which consisted mostly of blood. Every bit of fluid we gave him was "floating" under the skin (this is b/c many of his organs had shut down and his body would not metabolize the fluid). We informed him that morning and told him it was best to put Boy down. He asked if we wanted to put him down b/c of the money situation. Fact was this dog was in major pain and was the best thing for him. He was euthanized that morning.

Rip- 13yrs old. 85.6lbs K-9 Black lab
-Congestive heart failure due to heart worms.- Again, no use of heart worm medication and ultimately lead to death. These two lived a very long life and were on heart worm medication for years. Why the owners would stop all of the sudden is beyond me.

Chico- 3yrs old. 15.3lbs K-9 Jack Russell
-HBC (hit by car)- This was sad to me. This dog was hit over two days before they bring him in. After an x-ray we found him to have many fractured vertebrates. He was still trying to walk so there was no paralysis, which means he was in severe pain. If I was hit by a car I would want intimidate attention.

What do I want? I want people to realize pets are living things like us. They feel pain like us. Is it really that hard to get it medical attention they deserve? If you can't afford the medical bills or simply don't want to spend the money on them, then you do not deserve an animal.

There will be many more tomorrow.

Good topic, but I feel animal lovers may read and be adversely affected, so I added a warning. Post away!

It's sad that all these euthanizations happened in a single work-day.

I knew a punk who was living in the condo next door. He happened to have a sweet, good-looking, jet black cat, Booboo. Booboo was never allowed inside and was never fed, but he still hung around the condoes. That cat gradually became feral, and once the punk was about to move away, he had to set a trap for it to come with him.

*******.

Really sad. Thanks for ruining my day Hatter.

No this is a good idea. Some people are really uninformed on this type of thing. I hate watching those pet shows on animal planet. They are so sad. There are so many people that just don't deserve the love and attention animals bring to humans. Some of these pets died from negligence. I think that owner's that commit this crime should be penalized. Not really sure how, but they should have some type of punishment. At least stop them from killing other animals.

I don't think I could be a vet, too much sadness.

I was in China a couple of days ago where I visited a small, run down zoo. It was here where I attended a miniature circus act with animals. I was horrified by what I saw. The trainers would hit the animals to get them to do what they wanted if they didn't act quickly enough.

There was a dog who could not have been over 20 pounds who wouldn't get on a basketball and balance on it so the trainer kicked the ball at it. hard. There was also a little capuchin (sp?) monkey who wouldn't listen and the trainer was almost about to kick it but stopped halfway because the monkey ended up doing the trick. A small orangatang was dragged by a chain around his neck for not obeying.

Alright, this wasn't about domestic animals, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Okay, I have a question. I have a lizard, specifically a desert lizard, a leopard gecko, and I read a book about leopard geckos that said to feed them every 3 days, however, my lizard soon became fat, mostly in the tail because they store food in they're tail. I'd really like to know how often to feed her, I currently do it about 4 or 5 days apart, and give her like 5 or6 meal worms instead of her previous 3. She seems to be doing fine, but I don't want to over feed her, or under feed her. Any suggestions?

Uh...I think it's normal for a Leopard Gecko to have a fat tail. :p

Yes, it is, but they store food in their tail so they don't have to hunt to often. So the bigger doesn't really mean the better in terms of feeding.

Just give it some exercise, let it roam around your room a bit. That might help, otherwise just feed it normally.

How can people do these things to their pets? Back when I lived in an apartment stray cats would come to our quarters some times, so my family started buying cat food. I think the owners stopped bothering to feed some of them because we started to. Isn't there free vet clinics in some places, too?

I know, I had an African leopard gecko.

I'm just saying that the tail getting pretty chunky is a normal thing and that nothing's wrong with its feeding schedule. :p

Well, when he was alive, I'd feed him every two or three days.
Small crickets on monday and thursday, a couple worms or a pinkie on saturday.

I had him when I was pretty young, though. He's long gone. :(

Edit:

Yes, pinkies are the newborn mice.

I dunno about the freezer, I always fed mine to the gecko when they were alive.

Are pinkies those little dead mice that you keep in your freezer? Those things freak me out.

This happened to my family, too. It was a white tom cat, skinny. We couldn't help but feeding it. Actually, I think it's owners were long gone, but did live here at one point, as it only hung around our place, even before we began feeding it.

For the gecko, there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. I would however switch to the advised feeding habits.

We had an emergency call last night involving a cat/dog fight. The cat was pregnant and with a broken back. We took the kittens out and gave the mother steroids. The kittens were not completely ready but was no other choice. So they are needing to be bottle fed (mother has not produced milk yet). Just thought I would share that.

-7/9/07-

Roo- 5lbs 3ozs. 3yrs old. K-9 Chihuahua
-HBC Multiple pelvic fractures- This was a five pound dog that lived outside. The owner actually ran him over and then brought him in to be put down. The vet was upset and wanted to save this dog but the extent of the injuries were too server. It would of required an orthopedic surgeon and many thousands of dollars.

Tippy- 4yrs old 51lbs K-9 Blue heeler.
-Emergency Swallowed treble hook- This was really sad. The owner brought the dog in with the string hanging out of the mouth. We sedated the dog and took an x-ray. Come to find out, the hook had not passed all the way to the stomach (which would of been great). The hook was stuck in the trachea. We used a devise to try to push the hook the rest of the way but it was snagged too bad. The owner wanted to see the dog before we put him down so we had to bring him out of sedation only to put him back into sedation. My dog does many things with me and Im sure if I went fishing I would take him. Just goes to show you that dogs are like kids, always into everything.

Carlo- 2yrs old. 61lbs. K-9 English Bulldog.
-Emergency Heat Stroke- This dog did not die. The owner brought the dog in after going to Wal-Mart and leaving his two dogs in the bed of his truck with a camper shell. He tells us "It has a/c in there." I dont know about you but Ive never seen a truck with a/c in the bed. Anyway, we bring the dogs temp down to 104 and send him home. The owner was ranting about how much the dog was worth yet didnt want to let us keep him overnight for observation. We get a call a few days later and the dog is doing good. This is amazing because when he came in his temp was so high it did not register on the thermometer (which goes to 109). With a temp like that there was little doubt the dog would suffer brain damage not to mention various organs throughout the body.

There were many more but I feel to leave out the many Congestive heart failures. Just remember to give your dog/cat heart worm preventive. Please.

There is nothing I hate more about some pet owners than when they leave their pets in the car while they're shopping! It's insane! Don't people feel what it's like when the car's been sitting out in the sun, even if it's just 75 degrees? Especially leather cars! Aggh!

I used to volunteer at a pet center before I went to college. The worst case I ever had to deal with was a man returning a dog. It was a mutt, but I think it might have had some Newfoundland in it. Anyway, he'd had this dog for over a year. He'd taught it a lot of tricks, and the dog had gotten fairly close to him. However, he returned the dog to us because it wasn't a good hunting dog. It got scared at the sound of gunfire.

I mean, ****-it! Don't people get that animals love back?

Figured this would be a good place to put this.

There was this other thread in the PRoom (closed) about Food Asphixia, and out of curiosity, I went to Wikipedia and looked it up. Guess what I found?

Wiki said:
In an experiment where dogs were suffocated by placing an air-tight rubber mask over the dogs' heads, it was shown that it took around 8 minutes for the dogs to go into cardiac arrest. Breathing movements continued and the animals engaged in violent struggle or had convulsions until the point of death
WTF?

Who authorizes that? Just curious, I mean that's so sick, how can that be legal?

Mr. GAW that is sick[Not you, the test], i dunno why they would even ****ING TEST THAT??? Like WTF? I don't even want to think about that... :(

I am a animal lover and animals loves me, like when im walking and a dog walks by they always are 'attracted' to me. So heres my story, and its not sad[well kind of, but i didn't feel sad after i helped the dog]:

I was at a park and there was a family there with two little kids and the mom, they didn't speak english and the littlest kid was about four years old. And the four year old kid was pulling the dog very hard by the leash and choking it, and the dog always had its tail between its legs. So obviously this dog will always be frightened its whole life of people, even while i was petting him/her, it was still a little frightened. SO eventually i couldn't take it and i said to the mother that the kid was hurting the dog, of course she couldn't understand me and i had to make motions of choking. And she told, the kid to be softer witht he dog and not hurt it. After that i felt good, but i know there are still dogs out there that are mistreated, but it felt good to start helping out dogs... :(

Does anyone else got soem stories? Not that yours are bad Mad Hatter, but i think if someone's got a story or something they should share it.

The people who authorize that experiment do so to test products for choking hazard. Personally, I'd rather a few dogs die than a child. If you feel otherwise, you are as stupid as PETA.

That's not to say I advocate animal cruelty at all. On the contrary, I feel that pets should have plenty attention and be well taken care of. However, if the situation arises for a pet or a child to be saved, I'd always go for the child because human life is worth more.

wow, dude dogs have just as much right to be here as we do. Just because we are the dominant specias doesn't mean that humans are always better than dogs, but im not saying i'd kill myself to save a dog. But they shouldn't be killed to save someone's life, unless they are attacking the person or something... I know what you mean, but when i first read it it sounded mean. :( PETA LOL, that episode was disgusting. But i know what you mean and i agree but disagree with you.

Oddly enough, testing on animals is a question they ask you when interviewing for vet school. Ive been struggling this entire summer to come up with the right answer. The main fact is that these animals are to be euthanized anyway. If the dog is going to be put down then why cant their last days be spent trying to save other lives or beating diseases?

But, the asphyxia test was a case of extreme animal cruelty. We have known for a long time how long it takes to suffocate. There is no reason to intentionally kill something simply to find out "wow, he struggled when he couldn't breath."

I guess there is no right answer.

Well if they need to be killed because they are in pain or something, then it wouldn't matter if they did a test on them right before they died...

I really enjoy this thread. It shows how irresponsible we have become towards animals.

And by the way, on The Mad Hatter's recent update about the cat/dog fight. I was there when the cat came in. It was so amazing being able to save the very, very small kitties.

And my two cents on animal testing...I agree, if it saves lives then why not do it. Esp. if the animal is going to be put down.
