First things first: this post is not meant for me to complain! I simply noticed something that I felt needed to be addressed.

So the competitive smashers have felt a lot of "hate". Sakurai never really supported us and nor do our casual friends who get wrecked by us. But in my experience I haven't quite made it that far yet. I'm pretty new at this point, and I've told some friends about the training I've been doing. A few know what a wavedash is and they know what an l-cancel is. One friend of mine is a smash fan. He has brawl, melee, and smash 4 (which he consistently destroys me in). He has played for quite a while and it's mainly because of him that I ever tried smash 4 (my first smash game of my own). He's usually nice, but now he constantly bugs me about "studying my frame data" or anything else like that. I can have a somewhat normal conversation with him, but this always comes up, and I find he has a tendency to ignore me or consider me "weird" in a way now.

I want to hear anything you people have experienced, any possible responses to this, and just anything you guys think of on the topic.

Also, how does anyone respond to someone saying "what's the crack". Apparently it's a phrase that means what's up. How do you even take that seriously?!

First, who says "what the crack?" that sounds more like something you say when surprised than a greeting. What the crack is up with that?

But seriously, not everyone is going to look at you talking Melee seriously as good or even acceptable. I'm very fortunate to have friends that don't play melee and I can show them my matches and they will still be amazed. All you can do is just explain that this amazing game of ours is something you'd like to put time into. I haven't really been in your position, but to me, I have a blast playing this game.

I can't really get into detail when I talk with most of my friends, but it's still fun watching and playing the game. We all love it.

I'm fortunate in the complete opposite way of AirFair. Nearly all of my friends play Melee and at lunch, we almost always talk about either modern-day society, band, or Melee/PM. We frequently talk about big news (like Dr. Peepee getting kicked off of the top 5 although Leffen is still be #6 in everyone's heart, Armada rising above M2K, and the Swedish stealing the US top spots) and watch matches on other people's laptops or phones. We even have our own Facebook page for everyone that goes to our school and plays Melee (there are about 10 of us in the group).

Also, we sometimes play PM on a projector in the instrument closet if our band director is checking scales or solos (with his permission, of course). There is only one person at our school that actually plays Melee competitively outside of the band program, so we all get a lot of practice and get better collectively.

Seriously? That's amazing! there's only one other Melee player at my school (It's pretty small for a high school sadly) and we can't even meet up. Nonetheless I try and go to Smashfests whenever my parents can drive (I can't drive till Summer lol). In fact, I'm going to a tournament on Saturday. Pretty nervous, because I don't play against people too often.

Lol, that's funny, I'm in band too, and so is my friend. What instrument do you play? My friend and I are both alto sax.

I'm a trumpet. Other Smash friends are 2 altos, 1 bassoon, 1 trombone, 2 claranets, 1 baritone, and 1 bari sax.

Yup, my high school is pretty big. I have a graduating class of 750 people.. The population of the town has more than doubled since I was born.

EDIT: I just looked it up; the population of my town actually quadrupled since I was born.

It's quite natural that not everyone is interested in competitive gaming and trying to really optimize gameplay by practice and theory. I had a casual group which with I played melee quite regularly from 2003 to 2004, until I discovered smashboards. Then I became quickly much better than my friends and they lost interest, but it's not really something you can do much about. Luckily the scene is now evolving at huge rate, and it shouldn't be hard to find competitively oriented players anymore.

(like Dr. Peepee getting kicked off of the top 5 although Leffen is still be #6 in everyone's heart, Armada rising above M2K, and the Swedish stealing the US top spots)

Whaaaat, not going to happen you unbeliever. If anybody is going to be kicked, it's hbox or m2k.

It already did happen. He is 6th in the official rankings (why it was news we were talking about), but I think he would be #2 if he actually traveled to tournaments as often as M2K or Mang0.

EDIT: Also, I always believe in PP. I live about 30 minutes away from him and I met him at a tournament about half a year ago. Haven't seen each-other since, but he was a cool guy.

Somebody actually cares about the horrible ranking system? If it was ELO as it should, pp would be #3 at least probably. Also pp had at least the 3rd best year last year, I would say 2nd best actully.

I just talked about it with my friends because he was out of the top 5 on the rankings on Smashboards. It was merely some news that we discussed at a conversation over lunch.

I'm 15. 16 this May. I've had my learners since last Summer. Going to test for license after May.

Bruh. We have like 118 in my class, and it's only going to get smaller, because people are leaving. It sucks.

The ranking system is mostly about events that are approved by the boards. Since there are so many events accross the States, it's pretty hard to make it 100% accurate without panelists.

It's an Irish phrase. It's often spelt 'Craic'. No, it is not referring to drugs haha. Just reply like you would to 'what's up'.
It's even got its own wikipedia page! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craic

As for the hate: my friends all just casually play the most recent smash. They have never understood Melee and think I'm mad for playing it a decade after release. They love Project M though, I think they just like having lots of characters.

Lol, I know what it means, it's just so hard to take seriously. Thx anyways. I don't think he even knows that it's Irish or that it's spelt craic. Maybe I can respond by saying that im learning what "what's the crack" means lol

Well it can be spelt either craic or crack. The world is bigger than Edmonton USA. People in different places speak differently. I'm sure there are some words and phrases that you use which would sound weird to Irish people too.

Ahhhh sorry Canada! It's definitely bigger than my geography knowledge.
... Okay, so I've actually looked up Edmonton and it's actually pretty big... So yeah, Go Eskimos/Oilers/Capitals/Huskies/Wildcats/Stallions/Drillers/Oil Kings/whoever DerpyDayha supports. May your teams be prosperous and your Ken combos illustrious. I also hope you have good craic... Okay, now we're pushing it. I'm leaving now, peace out Canada!

I didn't forget... They were disrespectful to m'lady last time we were there. They owe me some money too. Hell, that's the last time I'm financing the Hollywood dreams of some left back's kid. Now I'm getting letters saying because Pete was released, his debts are no longer cross-collaterised with the clubs debts. So no, I didn't forget the Beavers. I'll never forget the Beavers.
