The Great Aussie Underdog – Smopup at Genesis 3

Every nation loves an underdog, but arguably none more so than Australia. With stories of the Aussie battler running deep into the country’s heritage there is no denying how synonymous this is with the Australian way of life. Enter smopup (smoking puppy); the winner of City of Melee and Australia’s great hope in SSBM at Genesis 3. To better understand smopup's play style, please watch the video below. Featuring clips gathered from tournaments all over Australia where smopup has been showing his mettle, consistently placing well no matter where he goes. The video is given a raw vibe to better translate the underdog status and the grittiness of his Australian background.

Smopup represents a change in the Melee scene of Australia. After moving in with notable player SD in 2010, his game steadily improved under his guidance and in 2014 smopup began taking names. The old guard of Melee was over and fresh faces in the scene were beginning to establish themselves. In 2015 smopup cemented himself as one of the best players in the country, taking 17th at BAM7 and winning City of Melee, the tournament that bought him a place here today. Unfortunately, smopup lost his first set to Drephen but managed to make it through to round 2 pools!

Also worth mentioning are Australia’s other relevant Melee reps at Genesis. Rainbow is a Peach main that is sure to place as well as smopup and there's also prettycoolguy, a modest Victorian Fox. If you want to follow smopup’s journey in America, be sure to hit him up on twitter via this link or if you want to know more about Melee in Australia, these guys should have you covered

@LHC_Maribro is super excited to see how his Aussie compatriots go in America!
