The way I see it is that the FS makes up for a charcaters weakness or stregnth. Like tonights Ike update. I have been hearing that IKE is very powerful and so is his FS, but it's range is extremely limited, which balances him out. Peach is has always been light and damage prone, her FS allows her to severely reduce her damage. Bowers is slow, but his FS has the ability to kill all of those speed characters. Metaknight who seems to be the best (so far) of the new characters has a very powerful, yet very limited FS, this sort of negates him. You see what I am getting at? Another example is the invincibility issue.... Yes Some SF say "They are invincible during this " and I have seen others that say "He is invincible while in the middle of this move" Both od which leads me to think that the Final Smash is indeed the equalizer. For some characters they will need it to survive and others will just need it as a threat because using it wont help them as much. Where as a character may seen a little broken that is rectified with the FS. Post your thought...

Ike's final smash may be decently hard to hit with anyway, but decides that you aren't even looking at the big picture.

It really seems like the Final Smashes are assigned to the character just to hold true to games they have been in. I really do not think that Sakurai put much thought into balancing character's around the the Final Smash. Look at Sonic, who seems like a decent character from what many saw in at E-for-All. Sonic's Final Smash is also a very good move, likely to be better overall than even Ike's. Then there is DK, who from what we know know, didn't seem as good in the demo in comparison. DK's final smash isn't very good from what I read and therefore doesn't fit your theory.

I don't think Sakurai is putting in that much thought to balancing... I am not even sure if Sakurai is really knows much about balancing a fighting game in general.

That's why DK's is rubbish, to make up for his...

oh. :urg:

Seriously though, it's a good take on the Final Smash: something that inherently 'fits' the character, and at the same time helps them turn a weakness into a strength. :)

lolz

Ike's Final Smash has to be one of the flashiest coolest looking ones...but this equalizer concept is just like any other item. Items are usually included in tournaments to attempt to even out the pros with the noobs. Same with this I think.

who says DK's is rubish.
yes, i've seen the videos where he sits in the corner, and plays his drums doing nothing.

but from what i heard, for his FS you tap the buttons to the beat or something, and the radius growns.
at E4A it was so noisy all you could hear was the smash babes screech, so no one could use DK's FS well.

THEN THE RANGE WILL BE LARGER THAN ALL OF IKE'S MOVES COMBINED! MWAHAHAHAAH-ol.

How would you know what button to press?

or he could bring his motor bike out, and and ride it for some time, like fox's land rover. I just wonder if zelda will have the same FS as sheik, or will they get different ones.

The moves can still be true to the games AND an equalizer. Dont forget he still decides HOW powerful the moves are, and what there limitations are.

Remember "PRESSONEPRESSONEPRESSONE!!!"? You press the special button to activate the FS, and when you're using it as well, also like pressing it to send out an electric pulse during Volt Tackle.

Anyway, I tend to agree with you, but I don't think it deserves it's own thread. Try bringing it up here:
